What can one say, beautiful, articulate, such finality of purpose. This puts me in a magical place that few can do. Thank you Bill, Tony and Kenny for that wonderful performance!!
How do jazz groups do it?! :D I can get solo jazz pretty easily; there's a lot of syncopation and freestyling--so it amazes me when a group can do jazz and make it sound so good! :D
Saw Bill and a combo do a show on the music of Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant about a month ago. Truly an amazing musician and creator or sound palates.
this is sick by the end of it. Frisell would be the only jazz musician to cover a Delfonics tune... never would have thought it, but now that I hear it, thats right up his alley. Makes perfect sense. Great vibe. That drummer has to be Steven Hawkins son. Im sure of it. Either way, all these guys went to space and back.
@goldensleeves All the melodies are based off a Delfonics ( watch?v=375vwVZ7uAs ) song that was released in 1969, so, no. Not copied from Santana. Though, it wouldn't be unheard of to have similar sounding melodies from different people.
this is remarkable. i'm a frisell fan from way back but this takes the cake. starts off almost naff and then builds and builds until sonic mayhem is reached.
Saw him live recently, great show but frustrating because when he plays he faces hard right, looking at the keys and drummer during the whole show so you can't cop any licks or see anything at all unless you are all the way over on the extreme stage right. Amazing talent, grew up in a home where he literally never came out of his room for years, played guitar all day every day! Lucky for us ;)
@kermitkev Re: Bill Frisell neck pickup. The gold foil idea is a really good one. Love those and have them in a bunch of guitars. I could well be, but they are a bit smaller than a standard humbucker size shown here.
One other closeup from another video showed it looking like a Gretsch Filtertron.
The thing is...it's mostly in his fingers! One of the most distinctive players in history. Right up there with Chester and Lester in my book.
Great stuff. Is he looping some tracks or overdubbing? It sounds in places like he's playing two guitar parts at once. And at the end he's just waiting to play a music box (or something) over the pickups? Fascinating performance.
Tabs would be of no use. There's nothing Bill's doing which is technically unfathomable, compared to, say Scotty Anderson (check out his Sweet Georgia Brown with Bob Saxton..holy hell..) However, with time, tabs, and patience, it's conceivable that one could get the Scotty thing going. Trying to make just one note sing the way Bill does is impossible, so just sit back and enjoy the ride. (Sometimes I listen to other music, but the urge subsides and it's back to Bill. Thanks Mr Bathoshue!)
I fully concur with tbeezer2009's and keyehaw's comments. This is the kind of initiative and musical choice that bring people unfamiliar with the jazz idiom to the pleasure of listening to this type of music. Does anybody has an audio track of this?
I also wonder why some comments appear on my screen with the mention "spam". In any case may I reiterate my request, which is genuine: if somebody owns an audio track of this performance by Frisell, and is willing to send it to me - I presume this is legal - I would greatly appreciate. StExup55
Wow! you think he is going to pay it straight throughout, but it really builds fo a nice (and surprising) crescendo...A nice use of effects, and just great improvising. I miss joey baron and kermit driscoll a LOT, but he is always finding great people to play with.

This is great! I have been a Frisell fan for many years and this it's great to see him play with such passion. He really enjoys what he's doing and that's important.
Shows, including this one, from the Rochester International Jazz Festival have aired on PBS HD stations around the U.S. This Frisell show had an airtime of about 57 minutes and it's a good one.
so am I right in hearing that at some point the hi-hat gets looped as well as the guitar parts?
