  • so am I right in hearing that at some point the hi-hat gets looped as well as the guitar parts?

  • Bill Frisell!! ギタリスト目指す御方は必観聴!! なんて温かみのある♪ギター歌うとはこの事ですね。

  • Bill Frisell(EG) with Tony Scherr(AB), Kenny Wollesen(Dr)

Thank you so much for this upload !!

  • The musicbox on the pickups at the end is just awesome!

  • OMG wow awesome can't believe I get to see him in September in champaign il Ellnora fest dang so sweet

  • What can one say, beautiful, articulate, such finality of purpose. This puts me in a magical place that few can do. Thank you Bill, Tony and Kenny for that wonderful performance!!

  • This knocks me out and always makes my day better

  • How do jazz groups do it?! :D I can get solo jazz pretty easily; there's a lot of syncopation and freestyling--so it amazes me when a group can do jazz and make it sound so good! :D

  • @moearly Jazz sounds good most of the time. Start exploring and listen. It'll change your world

  • Saw Bill and a combo do a show on the music of Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant about a month ago. Truly an amazing musician and creator or sound palates.

  • What an advanced musician! So original and unique! God bless Bill Frisell.

  • this is sick by the end of it. Frisell would be the only jazz musician to cover a Delfonics tune... never would have thought it, but now that I hear it, thats right up his alley. Makes perfect sense. Great vibe. That drummer has to be Steven Hawkins son. Im sure of it. Either way, all these guys went to space and back.

  • yes yes YES

This is honest music on a level that most musicians (in any genre) WISH they could tap into.

  • There a recording or DVD of this show somewhere?

  • what a bassman !

  • This is so great.

Wish I had a recording of it.

  • Amazing

  • What album is this on, dear goodness I just stumbled over this cause I started watching Frisell videos on youtube and now I cant stop listening.

  • GENIO!

  • Frisell is the only jazz cat badass enough to pull this song off

  • btfl but tempo a tad too fast and frantic IMO, Ross Traut & Steve Rodby do a btfl version, much mellower; no drums

  • I can feel the hairs on my neck stand on end, and I haven't got that much hair up there as it is ......fantastic

  • This is beautiful. I wish there was a soft voice singing the lyrics in the background though.

  • Bill is such a master.

  • i'm tellin ya...the way he strings this shit together makes me wanna cry...i'll stick with the bass i guess.

enormous kudos to the band as well

  • isnt' that line he does at 0:42 the same line used in Santana's Samba Pa Ti song???

  • @goldensleeves All the melodies are based off a Delfonics ( watch?v=375vwVZ7uAs ) song that was released in 1969, so, no. Not copied from Santana. Though, it wouldn't be unheard of to have similar sounding melodies from different people.

  • utterly stunning!

  • It surprised me the drummer lasted to the end, it seemed he would faint..

  • this is remarkable. i'm a frisell fan from way back but this takes the cake. starts off almost naff and then builds and builds until sonic mayhem is reached.

  • Best guitarist on Urth! ! ! Go, Billy, go. My best reason to go on living on this godforsaken planet.

  • Best guitarist on Urth! ! ! Go, Billy, go.

  • Totally amazing.

  • man, karl rove can really play!

  • @sonderangerbot

    Hah!!!!!!

He got taller, lost weight and gained a little hair too! B^D

  • astonishing!!!

  • Beautiful....

  • where can i find this album song??..i need it for my wedding can someone help me??thank you very much

  • @AnerekAdle I don't think Bill has recorded this but I'm sure theres a way you can download this video

  • Is he holding a music box up to his pickup at the end? Or what is that?

  • what is bill doing here at the very end? the effects thing

  • empty seats - unbelievable - but a stellar performance - come to the sage Bill

  • Saw him live recently, great show but frustrating because when he plays he faces hard right, looking at the keys and drummer during the whole show so you can't cop any licks or see anything at all unless you are all the way over on the extreme stage right. Amazing talent, grew up in a home where he literally never came out of his room for years, played guitar all day every day! Lucky for us ;)

  • very NICE....

  • it's a torture for audiences there for couldn't scream and stand and clap their hands!

  • Damn, i love his looping.

  • Would anybody know whether Bill Frisell has released a CD with this session?

    stexup55

  • I don't think he has. I've looked for it but can't find it if he has. I'm sure it's on some bootleg recording of this though.

  • intimite and huge at the same time, beauty an imagination, lots of emotion but no overacting, ... I'm impressed, thx bill(and band)

  • What an immaculately talented bunch of guys..

  • Bill Frisell is an inspiring player. I love this band.

  • OMG the tone!

  • Amen, so much of it!!!

  • Love your sound and feel.

    Leo Quintero.

  • good god, this is just beautifully executed. just beautiful. thanks for posting!

  • I cant believe Frisell is doing this song.

  • iS that a TV Jones Powertron in the neck?

  • I may be wrong, but I believe it's one of those old Teisco gold foil pickups, like Ry Cooder uses.

  • @kermitkev Re: Bill Frisell neck pickup. The gold foil idea is a really good one. Love those and have them in a bunch of guitars. I could well be, but they are a bit smaller than a standard humbucker size shown here.

One other closeup from another video showed it looking like a Gretsch Filtertron.

The thing is...it's mostly in his fingers! One of the most distinctive players in history. Right up there with Chester and Lester in my book.

  • Somebody knows what model of telecaster is bill using?

  • Custom 346, made in Japan

  • thank you...

  • This gets better and better every time. Watching this video is like going to church. Shows you why Frisell is the master.

  • great Bill cool Frisell

  • forgot to mention, serious chops drummer and bass player too. Love Kenny's loose playing style

  • bill has the fattest lines, and he plays them so patiently.

  • Great stuff. Is he looping some tracks or overdubbing? It sounds in places like he's playing two guitar parts at once. And at the end he's just waiting to play a music box (or something) over the pickups? Fascinating performance.

  • Bill uses loops (to beautiful effect). I think it's the Line 6 Delay Modeller or something.

This song is a foretaste of heaven. Man - Look at Kenny, he's practically hypnotized by the end! lol. Beauty.

  • This is the coolest. Bill Frisell has one of my favorite guitar tones ever. Great sounds.

  • anyone have tabs???

  • Tabs would be of no use. There's nothing Bill's doing which is technically unfathomable, compared to, say Scotty Anderson (check out his Sweet Georgia Brown with Bob Saxton..holy hell..) However, with time, tabs, and patience, it's conceivable that one could get the Scotty thing going. Trying to make just one note sing the way Bill does is impossible, so just sit back and enjoy the ride. (Sometimes I listen to other music, but the urge subsides and it's back to Bill. Thanks Mr Bathoshue!)

  • Dont you ever ask for TABS again! :)

  • @Sandemose HaHa good one! Tabs! as if. You get tabs for beginner stuff, not this.

  • stupid cameraman

  • is it on any recording? even bootleg?

  • That's really great.

  • lovely

  • I fully concur with tbeezer2009's and keyehaw's comments. This is the kind of initiative and musical choice that bring people unfamiliar with the jazz idiom to the pleasure of listening to this type of music. Does anybody has an audio track of this?

    StExup55

  • Why has this been marked as spam?

  • I also wonder why some comments appear on my screen with the mention "spam". In any case may I reiterate my request, which is genuine: if somebody owns an audio track of this performance by Frisell, and is willing to send it to me - I presume this is legal - I would greatly appreciate. StExup55

  • la la la la laaa meaans i love yOu!!!! ♪

  • did you record the whole show? I'd like to get ahold of the full set

  • I can't stop listening to this!

  • Wow! you think he is going to pay it straight throughout, but it really builds fo a nice (and surprising) crescendo...A nice use of effects, and just great improvising. I miss joey baron and kermit driscoll a LOT, but he is always finding great people to play with.

    sweet stuff...

  • Fully concur with you. This is the kind of initiative and musical choice that bring people unfamiliar with the jazz idiom to the pleasure of listening to this type of music. Doesn anybody has an audio track of this?

  • There's always a smile in Frisell's music. Great stuff.

  • was this made into a DVD?

  • thanks so much for uploading all these, WONDERFUL MUSIC!

  • Freakin' insane... Wow...

  • This is great! I have been a Frisell fan for many years and this it's great to see him play with such passion. He really enjoys what he's doing and that's important.

  • Where the hell are you getting these videos?

  • Shows, including this one, from the Rochester International Jazz Festival have aired on PBS HD stations around the U.S. This Frisell show had an airtime of about 57 minutes and it's a good one.
