after the fall of the United States, the futuristic peeps will come out and say, wow, these people used to live like this! Hope you ol' new yorkers got to tag your name lol, i sure did - "rd strikes again" - thats me lolol
Wow, this is stupid, their subway cars, not ships! If their in good condition, put 5 or 6 cars connected together in central park for the kids to play on. make them child safe or make a museum, not sink them! all them idiots at MTA are environmentalists, eco green shit, probaly took them out of service because they weren't environmentaly efficent! I would buy a few for display or to keep in my backyard. What are they going to sink next? buses, taxis? fucken idiots, I swear!
@pennyf9 doof.. they weren't in good condition.thats why they retired lol... they have a few up in flushing for display.. theres also a few in the NYCT trainsit museum
I miss the old Redbirds. When I was up there a few years back right before they took them out of service, some of them were in really bad shape. Outsides were rusted pretty bad. Wish I had some money to blow, would love to have a couple of them in a back yard.
These cars are a testimony to what American industry used to be. Able to build products that would last and last and last. The Redbirds even outlasted the factory that built them: The St. Louis Car Company. These subway cars could have been rebuilt again but of course the new trains have the new computerized gadgetry and use less energy. But I doubt they will last 40+ years.
@ACLTony Exactly what I tell everyone. We need to bring back those old American car companys. Look at the R32s. They look and run great. The new trains are already starting to rust and have different problems.
It is saddening Mustang. The strong, durable America we grew up in is gone with outsourcing, political correctness, and substandard quality the new norm. I would have loved to travel back to New York City one more time just to ride my #2 line on those redbirds, from Allerton Ave in the Bronx to 14th St. in Manhattan as I did in the late 60s. I'll cherish those memories.
@ACLTony It would have been so easy to retrofit these with newer seating, airconditioning and electronic whatever; yet as usual these boneheads in power just scrap them all. Here in Australia, they did a similar thing to a commuter train they call the Prospector. 7 diesel railcars, two unpowered railcars, whom faithfully served for 45 years. All bar two were cut up for scrap. The Australian navy decommissions warships by turning them int dive wrecks much like these railcars. Stripped down
no it was all 10 redbirds just sitting in the rail yard ... o wait i just remembered.. theres a video of subway graffiti and i spotted it.. hold on i will give you the link
I would be sad if they dump the old trains that we have now into the shore. The current J&Z train has great memories of my grandfather and I when he took me to a ride "just for fun", I was only 3 now I'm 16, I hope they won't do that with those trains I will only ride those trains to go home as much as possible.
BTW This vid had one good thing, teaches us to never take things for granted, good times n_n
You can go visit the NY Transit Museum in Brooklyn. They have a couple of Redbirds sitting in the station there with some of their older brothers and sisters.
Hell no I hate them new silver shits, they make weird ass noises, I always liked the red ones casue you could look out the front door and see where u was goin
I grew up with these trains back in the 1960s and early 70s. I was very fond of them. Dumping them into the ocean as artificial reefs? Seems to cone off as a good thing, but it makes one wonder if this does turn the bottom into a junkyard. Steel does rust and inspite of the small amount....asbestos is still asbestos. I wonder if the transit authority checked with historical societies to see if any of them wanted some of the Redbirds for other museums and tourist lines.
stupid idea to dump them in the sea. the port authority has done some pretty stupid things. They knocked down Penn station, tried to knock down Grand Central, and now they dumped the redbirds in the sea. What stupid idea will they get next...
God forbid we use the trains as little shelters for the homeless who have no roof but lets give room and board to some damn fish!
