Complimenti!
Interesting, Any of you notice that this is a live performance? In other words, it is not a recital , where most of us have seen JDF singing this aria. I am a big fan of JDF but we hear it on recording, and think WOW! I give any tenor credit for singing this live because this aria is sung in fourth act!! that is about 3 1/2 hours into opera. Cut the huy some slack. There is a reason this opera is not sung on a regular basis in opera houses..TOO LONG for tenor...
This is not his repertoire! Has to work far too hard and pushes like mad. He's already tired on 04:14 and you can here signs of strain in his voice. The rest is all push push push... full credit to him that he can continue on to the caballetta. Gets thru it but how many perfomances can you do like that? On "défence" at 8:23 he has no more resonance in the lower register.
A clear sign of fatigue. It's not just a matter of range or if you can belt out Cs and C#s. It's only YOUR répertoire if you can do it on yr head. Look at Fisichella. He always sounded as fresh at the end of an Arnold perfomance as he did at the beginning...
I saw Maestro Giordani a few years ago as a relative unknown in Pagliacci and Cavalleria and he was incredible. ANY TENOR WHO ATTEMPTS THIS ROLE IS MY HERO..This has to be such a hard aria to sing....
Marcello Giordani, a great tenor, with an amazing warmth to his voice, he sings this so well, one of his best vocal performances, wish he would sing some more heavy repertoire like 'Pagliacci' or 'Die Meistersinger von Nuremburg', I think the heavy Wagner and Strauss repertoire would really suit his voice.
There may be some truth there, but look at it, he is in his 40's, had an amazing career and is still in his prime, just listen to his dramatic content in his opening phrases and his husky middle voice i think would suit the heavy repertoire, especially Pagliacci, don't you agree?
I mean he has alot to give in either repertoire I think, whether he sings Guillaume Tell or Tristan und Isolde.
Right, but the point is that singing this role (or Pagliacci for that matter) is COMPLETELY different than singing Tristan or Siegfried. They are MUCH more in the middle of the voice, and if you don't naturally have a lot of density in the core of your voice, you'll ruin it trying to push over the orchestration. The italian roles give you a higher tessitura and an easier orchestration, so it's MUCH easier to be heard (in most cases).
I suppose you are right in some ways, but I don't necessarily mean Siefried, or even Tristan but Die Meistersinger would be great for him, he has even gone on the records and said he would consider playing Walther, I just think that he should sing some heavier stuff, but definitely not reject his bel canto repertoire nor his beautiful high tessitura.
Right, but as an example, look at what heppened to Araiza. He was wonderful until he started singing things like Walther. Wagner willl do nothing but ruin a singer without a big, dense middle voice.
Yeah, you make a good point with Araiza, but Giordani has an already more dramatic voice than Araiza has ever had, Araiza would barely be able to sing Calaf, whereas Giordani throws it off with secure and safe vocals.
Giordani is and will always be wonderful, and he is into his career and knows what it is like to sing the bel canto repertoire, and I look at it like Chris Merritt, if Merritt can go from singing roles like Arnold to singing roles like Herod, why can't Giordani?
Merritt is a good example, and I hadn't hought of him. Although I think Merrit was a great tenor at one time, he never had the beauty of tone that Giordani does. I think no one knows Giordani's voice better than Giordani, and he'll sing whatever he wants. He's had a great career. I just hope he doesn't lose that gorgeous sound.
I agree with you, Merritt didn't have the vocal quality of Giordani. Giordani will sing what is right for him eventually I think as he has said, Meistersinger, I also hope he doesn't lose that clarion tenoral ring.
Giordani has said in interviews that Walther is in his future. I think Walther is fine, because it is high and vigorous, like Marcello's voice. I don't know about Pagliacci, I think its too low for him (he doesn't have a powerful bottom.) I worry about the beat that seems to have entered his voice in the past few seasons. Still a fantastic tenor.
Carissimo em que ano foi esta apresentação??

Brilliant Giordani! As Usual!

I think he's better in this type of rep, and the heavier stuff would ruin him.
