Why not get both?

NHL 09 Has the Be A Pro mode and the Online play is less choppy, with better graphics. But the gameplay can get quite arcade like at times and the Franchise is not as deep

2K9 has a more realistic overall presentation of hockey, with penalty's being called more often and the commentary is much better, and the Goalie Mode is still there and it still really cool. But the graphics are not as nice and the controls can sometimes be overcomplicated.

Both I think are good games.

Look at 2k9's gameplay people, it's much more realistic, The commentators actually call the play like a real nhl game. The overall presentation of the game is just way better. If you don't like the regular controls (they are sweet and have depth) then you can just use the regular 94 controls.

The graphics are phenomenal, and the gameplay is amazing.

The online league is my favorite part though.

Depends what you like man. Personally I'd go with 09 better gameplay better graphics. Now I know people will say the 2k9 has amazing graphics with the openings and all that, but I'm talking gameplay. What's the point of making the intro's really great when you skip them 90 most of the time anyways. Anyways, 2k9 is stacked with options, so if you like doing the fantasy drafts, and GM modes and trades, and etc... then you're probably better off getting 2k9. As much as it pains me to say it.

I used to love the 2K series much more than EA while PS2 was the system at the time. However, since the 360 came out, EA sports has brought the series back to life. I bought both last year for the 360. I can honestly say that I prefer the Pro Stick 2k offers over the skill stick. I like that you control when you shoot with a button but control the stick with the analog (brilliant in my opinion). The Franchise in 2k is better as well. Both games are good but for a hockey purist, I find 2k to be better (though they're changing last year's engine so I guess the great stuff might not be around again).
