neil has covered 3 songs ever... this, four strong winds (which is like the 2nd national anthem of canada), and "oh lonesome me" - by don gibson, one of the best song writers of all time.
neil, jerry g., bob dylan, beatles --- those are the 4 best of all time.
@kingdantje hey thanks man, i didin't even know that. just checked it out --- very good. i like day in the life a little better but, it's great too --- thanks!!!
@bluesboy25000 Jeff's version is pretty epic, but very different, comparison aint neccesary, it may be the same song but the genres and mood each artist tries to achieve on each version is completly different
You here all the critics saying that Lennon had geater creativity was somehow better when he left the Beatles; I've never got that. He never surpassed this song, infact has anybody?
@ShineOnCrazyDiamond1 yes u must. i was lucky enough to see him, long long time ago. i love him. he walked off stage when the audience wouldnt let him play his accoustic music. he came back & gave them the rock they wanted saying, i'm never ever coming back to pittsburgh again. i love him. i love how he was riding around in a pick up in the mud with jimi hendrix when he was Sposed to be on stage wi. stills nash & crosby....hahahahaha.......i love him. perfekt.
The faster people realise that Canadians and Americans are basically the same except for accents the better off North American will be. As a french canadian I'm somewhat an outsider and i've observed both groups, there isn't a big difference. Lock an American and a Canadian in a room and they'll get along just fine. International online fighting is stupid. Neil is Canadian though...
canada and america are nothing alike. There is a reason we canadians do not proclaim to have a national identity unless we are talking to yank. Most think of americans as a bunch of stupid, right wing, fat asses that care about nothing more than their next t.v. show.
Canadians would never even accept the potential candidacy of bush, palin and the rest.
we may be drunk n stoned most of the time but we will never reach such a degenerated state as the states
@blsplr51 He is a Canadian citizen but a master of the American invention, discovery, creatiion, of rock n roll. He is a world icon in the same league with Dylan and Lennon. one of the gods of rock n roll. I love Neil Young
wow, I think this rendition of Day in the Life is the best and even in some ways better than the original-- Neil sure does emulate the Hendrix like guitar feedback at the end but with his own unique style. what I really have always like about his music is the grittiness that permeates his sound. McCartney surely must have listened to this and enjoyed this rendition.
Iv'e seen Neil over 30 times...and with the exception of his "Greendale" set this was single handedly the best 45 min. set of his I've seen in years....long live the Godfather of Grundge
this makes me sad, because it makes me realize that John never got a chance to perform this awesome song live. Imagine if John did it live in concert, that would have been amazing.
@jasonriggs What do you mean never got the chance?Sgt Pepper was recorded in 1966/67 and John died in 1980 that's 14 years of a opportunity to play the song live,he had the chance he just couldn't be bothered.
@jasonriggs It's not like he never got a chance, this song was released about 13 years before he was shot. John never played this song live because it was written during the time when the Beatles were exclusively a studio band and had stopped touring.
de examens waren goed hoor, en ik heb nog altijd youtube en cd's om naar hem te kijken en luisteren, maar zo vaak zal hij waarschijnlijk niet meer naar europa komen (al hoop ik op het tegendeel natuurlijk)
Yeah bud, the GREATEST concerts out of many rock shows I saw were those few that were not afraid to play great music prior to the show. Most shows play mediocre music beforehand to make them look better in comparison. Who else dares play a seminal Beatles song before they come out? So the '78 tour opened with this song, and then the recent tour closes with it. Neil always shows no fear.
Neil Young is my favorite artist after the Beatles, and he his playing my favorite Beatles song. This is really cool. Neil Young not only writes great music, but he has great taste....his cover songs are always of my favorites.
Im usually very cynical when it comes to beatles covers. but i have to say i really like how neil young sings this. I think its a great version and very suitable for concerts. I saw him sing it at glastonbury on telly and it sent a shiver down my spine so it must have really been somthing to actually be there
Im sorry, I have to wholeheartedly disagree with you, I was also at that gig in Dublin and I thought his version of this song was amazing. I was well impressed.

I thought both things that you have pointed out were minus points. Down By The River went on and on and on. I listen to Clapton and Page and they never waste a solo. Young's solos drag on and on and on. Down By The River was ridiculous and the constant restarts of Rockin' In The Free World sounded amateurish.
I was at Neil Young tonight in Dublin. He played A Day In The Life as his final encore. It sucked farts. It doesn't suit his musical style or his voice. I don't know why he is defiling a classic
Sucked?Way too harsh! Beatles version is better, Neil young is much more heavy, but some might prefer that. Thought it was an excellent finale.Breaking strings so end of encore. The Xylophone at the end- priceless!!!
He played this last night (14/06/09) at the Isle of Wight festival. Totally amazing, and he almost destroyed his guitar at the end. A spectacle that left me open mouthed. He gets bettter as he gets older.
This is actually the second time that Neil has used this in his live shows. During Rust, the Road Eyes finished setting up the stage as the Beatles version blasted through the sound system. Neil cut off the final chord which played at the end of the show. This is a rather subdued version compared to the one I saw in Detroit last December.
Yeah, Neil and I are the same age. I've been blown away for decades. But the musicianship on this song i/medley is beyond incrediblle, The Beatles is the only thing worth standing next to him.
my dear friend, if there's one thing certain, then it is that the original ahhhs are Lennon's and not Macca's (it's one of these songs they actually did make together). As for the ones in the Neil Young concert - most probably done by some of his stage musicians (doesn't need to be play back after all!) He played this today at the New Orleans Jazz Fest! You are the shit! New Anthology out,,,,can't wait. Never a bad time at this guy's show! As for critics, meh. Rather see Young doing this than hearing Muzak style Beatle cover selling cars or shoes on a TV commercial
yeah, you're right, but hats off to neil young for giving it his own twist. he's a massive beatles fan and proves it here by getting as near as possible to the original recorded version. imagine how someone like U2 would butcher this with there effects laden guitars, over produced so called live sound and bono's grating voice. i think neil's version has a nice raw quality that he pulls off! i'm a beatles purist by the way and don't think anyone should cover them but i'll let him off! top man!!!
proof of ur comment is the video of U2 covering southern man, Neil's song from gold rush. painful massacre of such an ace song. But Neil covering Beatles... love it =]
Yeah I think Neil plays it so it is enough like the beatles but he puts his own twist on it, his famous and different tone and sound. Saw him play this live, so good. Better then I could have hoped. Saw him play this a Wachovia Spectrum in philly that is
Lennon's lack of emotion was intentional. ("Well I just had to laugh/I saw the photograph/He blew his mind out in a car") He did it to make the song have a very dark and depressing sound and feel. This version is good, but John's lack of emotion is what makes the original as great as it is.

yeah, you're right, but hats off to neil young for giving it his own twist. he's a massive beatles fan and proves it here by getting as near as possible to the original recorded version. imagine how someone like U2 would butcher this with there effects laden guitars, over produced so called live sound and bono's grating voice. i think neil's version has a nice raw quality that he pulls off! i'm a beatles purist by the way and don't think anyone should cover them but i'll let him off! top man!!!

proof of ur comment is the video of U2 covering southern man, Neil's song from gold rush. painful massacre of such an ace song. But Neil covering Beatles... love it =]

In my opinion better than the Beatles version. All due respect but, John Lennon does not have enough emotion in his voice. Where Neil does.

Are you kidding?

No. I don't why. But, when I saw this then listened to the original I prefered Neil's I don't why.

This version is good, but John's lack of emotion is what makes the original as great as it is.

great rendition but I have to say the ending was something of an anti-climax...
I was hoping for a Pete Townsend style guitar-amp smash up....
Mahler005 2 years ago
You can't expect Neil to destroy the Old Black.... that would just be absurd. That guitar could almost be called his friend.

Neil doesnt always treat his friends very well....eat a peach Old Black, smash!!!
Mahler005 2 years ago
Anti-climatic?!?!? Try epic and humorous. Only neil would shred that hard and then end it with a tap of the xylophone. Classic!
dylanyoung22 2 years ago
No real Neil Young fan would ever say that...smash 'Old Black'? You have to be smoking crack...

I don't claim to be a fan...OK, I bought most of the 70s albums when they were released, but gave up after Hawkes & Doves....

If you haven`t seen Neil play "A day in the life" live, you have no frame of reference here. One of the best music moments I`ve ever seen.
