I just turned 13 and my Dad said we are going to get one of these off craigslist to restore, and it would end up being my car when I'm 16. This car's are freaking awesome I'm addicted to these videos! Nice job!
Is there after market parts for like carbon fiber/fiber glass parts? Like hood, door or fenders? I'm interested in getting a bug and converting it to electric and would like to make it lighter weight.
first thing to check is door fitment and how well body lines match, then do the doors open and shut well. i own 2 ovals and 2 1962 ragtop bugs. all the rust your bringing up is quite easily repairable. good tips for the novices though.
@bugbugboy for sure. these videos are made for the newbie, I have more difficult tasks in my other videos. This video series is to show common rust areas that even though are pretty easy to fix, can scare the new guy off.
@brighteyefilms Hey, I love your work! I just have one quick question. How hard are those chrome gravel guards to install? I want to put them on my 72 Super Beetle but I don't know how difficult that would be.
@Grimmvald Fronts are pretty easy, rears, you will need to unbolt the lower bolts on the fenders and even the one bolt that connects the fender to the running board to get em on. Not too bad to do.
Ok this is what I dont get..from 68 on the body looks just like a super beetle.how can you tell just from looking at them because I would hate to get screwed lol
oh yea i now they didn't start in 68 and that they did start in 71....but for someone just looking at them it's hard to see the diff between the two....i guess the only way i see right off to bat is when the hood is up and the extra tire is standing then i know it's a normal....and if it's flat then its a super....and then the tail light is like an elephant foot print on the super
Lol as soon as I typed that I went to go look and your right lol.seems that the new tail light didnt come till 73/74..I get that the hood is bigger (because everyone says so) but its hard for my eyes to catch the difference..I guess thats just the noob in me..but for sure if you pop the hood youll see that tire sitting flat.now that has to be a sure indicator of super beetle
Thanx for the tip. Im gonna go with the 58. also, is there a turbo kit for a 1600 that fits perfect? or is their too many mods for that like removing the back lid?
if you want to keep the value of your bug up, you will not mod anything and keep it stock. If you still want to mod, then get a later bug to do that, like the 66. Doing that to a 58 will decrease it's value. I have sold a bunch of bugs, and vintage always wins over custom.
Well it all depends really, anything in the 60s up till 67 are worth about the same. So a 64 and 67 are really the same value. A 58 would be worth more than a 66 when restored, all depends what you are willing to put into it.
I bought a '66 bug at auction 2 months ago... I wish I had watched this vid prior. I would be diving right now ,instead of JUST NOW PAINTING IT!! (LOTS of rust i didnt see until O pulled it all apart.) Great vids man, keep up the AWSOME work!!

@vanityrose12
Supers have bigger nose hoods,
and coil shocks with McPherson struts. they also started in 71, not 68

No, they all had the same tail lights regardless. Supers have a big hood.
