Kerri was in nobody's shadow in 96. If Kerri had not been injured in the team event, she would have gone on to win the individual all-around. There has never been a doubt in my mind.
@moviemary She was #1 overall on the floor, #5 on the vault and in the middle on beam and uneven bars. I believe she would have won the Gold for floor and at least been on the medal stand of the vault and overall. The US Commentators constantly pumped up the Doms and Shannon, but if you watch the videos where other country commentators talk all they say is how Kerri was the most powerful member of the team.
I still have my Wheaties Box with them on it..This was on of the most amazing moments in gymanstics history..It was so funny how reporters would say that Kerri was in the shadow of Dominique M. and Shannon Miller..but Kerri stole the whole show..Amazing!!!
Jesus. If they'd been smiling and happy, people would be criticizing them about that, "why aren't they concerned about Kerri?" They're world-class athlete competing at the Olympics and they've just won an historic gold medal--who cares if they're smiling convincingly enough?
I really wish female athletes could just COMPETE without everyone criticizing them about whether or not they're smiling. Nobody cares when the men smile or not.
Notice how starting at about 1:25, Shannon and Jaycie and Amanda are trying to get little Moceanu to get her butt over on the end so it will go tallest to shortest? Notice how Dom is obvlivious because it's not Bela telling her?
No i don't think that's it. It looks like they are trying to get her to move over so she can help Kerri up on the podium becuase then if you notice I think it was Shannon moves over to help her get up...that's why.
@threestooges3 Well from what they said in the documentary special about this, they each said that it didn't really feel like they'd done anything at the time. I remember Dominique Dawes saying that it didn't hit her then and that it's probably still hitting her. And Shannon said that they didn't really realize that they'd made history at the time and how big of a deal it actually was.
I remember this when it happened. Such GREAT SPIRITS! All of them. The best in Teamwork, Fellowship, Spirit de Corps, the great sense of Patriotism they gave us, (all coaches included). God bless them, God bless America. A Marine salute to TRUE AMERICAN HEROS.
@tmwalkerm Because what you wrote makes it seem like Moceanu actually gave a shit but anyone but herself when teh video proves she didn't until AFTER the FACT.
@GymTruthTeller AGAIN - WHO CARES??? Its 15 fucking years later, why is this an issue now???? Obviously you hate Moceanu and think she's a selfish bitch, whatever your reasons are, get over it.
Actually, Shannon was telling Kerri that they would all help her get up on the podium, then Kerri said "I don't know how". In case you couldn't quite tell...
I wonder what Shannon said to Kerri at 1:20, looks like "stop screaming" or "stop crying." It looks like Kerri's response is "I don't know how." I wonder what Amanda said to Shannon at 1:27... I think it was to see who was gonna help Kerri onto the podium. Or arguing about the order. I find it funny that Shannon stayed on the end. Instead of going back to position or putting Kerri between her and Jayce where according to height she belonged. Interesting.... THEY RULE! Great team!
i was 11. my whole family was watching on the edge of their seats. when keri landed that vault there was a scream throughout the neighborhood because every single person was watching it.what a memory. lucky to have lived through something so historic. AMAZING!!
Thank you so much for posting this. I was twelve, and I remember watching this so vivdly. I was also lucky enough to see all the gymnasts in the John Hancock tour a few months later. Amazing memories.
I was 19 almost 20 when the 96 games were held, so I felt a special connection with them, especially the ones who were my age. I didn't see them on the tour but I so wish I had.
i remember watching this when i was 4, and said i want to be just like them when i grow up. amaziong this touched my heart for the second time. these games truely got me started. i luv everyone one the team because they all have something significant to contribute. - Marie
I was only 6 years old when I watched this...it's the one of the first gymnastics competition I'd ever seen(I also remember watching Amy fall at the trials). It was like magic. I completely fell in love with the sport.
I don't think that's what he meant at all. He's just reminding everyone of her amazing fight back. After all, he also calls her a "courageous youngster."
Exactly. It's not being negative, it's a terrific story--she suffered a terrible fall during the trials and really, literally, almost didn't make it. If she hadn't sucked it up and gotten back on the beam (she clocked her eye badly and basically did the rest of her very difficult routine with one eye shut), she would not have made it through the trials.
That's not negative, it's a great story. That one aim of commentating, to draw out the good stories (hence the fluff).
I don't recall her exact title, but she basically runs the whole show. She runs the monthly national team training camps, which the U.S. National team is required to attend, and she leads a committee responsible for picking teams to all various national and int'l events in which national team members participate(Worlds, Olympics, Pan Ams, etc.) Bela doesn't really have a role with the national team anymore, that I know of.
They showed the reactions of the Russians and Romanians on TV, just not when they were getting the medals. The Russians were all bawling, and the Romanians were just completely stone-faced and in shock.
Being in that audience was the best part of watching the history in the making. I watched the other teams, but team USA was dead on and deserved that gold. Kerri's vault made me realize that you should never fall short of your dreams.
hey... does anyone have the 2000 sydney olympics team final footage? i'd like to see how the Russians actually blew their chances and khorkina removing her medal in disgust...
don't you want to see the whole thing, the actual contest? the romanians' and the russians' performances? maybe the russians were better. but what do you know about gymnastics ??
Still pisses me off that NBC didn't show the Russians and Romanians getting their medals.
