Pity it looks like Treibig is being hit by paint-balls at the end! I guess that is the only drawback of a movie of it's time, but otherwise a masterpiece. Another minor fault: what the hell does the German private say to Steiner after Treibig says "I had no part in it". I keep turning up the volume and pauing but can never make it out. That's either poor elocution from the actor or poor soundwork by the technicians.
Yes, Steiner's men in this instance were wearing Soviet uniforms so that it would look like they were prisoners. Their reasoning was that the German sentries wouldn't fire on unarmed prisoners, but they might have itchy trigger fingers if they saw a platoon of armed men advancing on them. Too bad Triebeck was in the trench and sought to kill Steiner to cover his own disgrace.
I love this movie, the director, the action, the story... I feel that i'm there and they mean something to me! Sounds crazy?
But thats what makes this movie a master peice. This is one of my all time favourite films!
Thank you for uploading this scene. Please can you upload the scene where they are talking about Ideals, war? Its near the begining where they say "War is for the the truely cultured people" and "War is the extention of state policies"
peckinpah the master of carnage and violence, watch a movie of his and you'll feel drained emotionally, mentally, and if you enjoy action movies you'll be numb and satisfied
@toby4700 Blackmailed HELL....the bastard didn't have to follow an immoral order. He could have gone right to the Colonel with what he knew. Did you miss the part where he said 'my passage home'.......he murdered those men. Bastard got what he deserved.
@Agundis1825 In an earlier scene, it was revieled that Treberg was gay and in a relationship with his aide. Stransky threatened to turn him in to the nazis, which would have meant death for him and disgreace to his family. He had no choice.
@toby4700 and in the spirit of friendly debate I still say he was a bastard. Stransky was such a bumbler by that point Colonel Brandt would have had all the evidence he needed to get rid of him. Much like the evidence he wanted from Steiner to begin with which started all the trouble. Treberg was no secret to any of them and none of them, Stransky included, wanted anything to do with Natzi's anyway. It would have been a Wehrmacht matter. But he choose to do this and try and murder them all.
What sux is that all Steiner had to do was move forward himself, leaving the rest under cover, and explain that the men coming up were not actually Russians. But that would have not made for such a poignant scene. Damn reality not matching good drama in movies!
@stephenmihaesco this was the day where a computer did not provide you with every little detail. How did they get him to scream like that? He was a good actor that's how. Gives me chills every time I watch this.

I felt bad for Treberg, because he was being blackmailed. Stransky still gets his though.

der härteste Antikriegsfilm des es giebt, nur leider immer gekürzt im deutschen Free und Pay TV. Bloß gut das ich die Videocassette im Original habe.
