Would this problem make a banging sound ONLY when driven slowly over rough ground.And ONLY from the same side always?

Have you tried sway bar links? They usually fail and cause knocking and clunking.

I have replaced the inner and outer tierods + the swaybar end links did wheel alingment at volvo dealer and the knocking has gone. :) Glad did it myself.
