  • the last preformance with Steve before he died.

  • Steve Clark's very last live performance. He past on about 16 months after this show. Rock On Mr. Clark.

  • DEF LEPPARD 4LIFE !

  • I love the way Steve moves.

  • Funny how we got some Adrenalize foreshadowing here...If i am not mistaken Joe wore almost the same outfit in the Make Love Like A Man video....

  • R.I.P. STEVE CLARK THE BEST ROCK ON

    ROCKER compuser

  • Very good live performance by the Leps here

  • Steve's last live performance with Def Leppard... :(

Rock In Peace Steve 'Steamin' Clark

You may be gone but not forgotten

  • Joe Elliot sounds incredible here

  • M i LOVE STEVEE...♥♥

  • Rock on, Steve Clark!!

  • The whole adrenalize album was too polished. When Steve Died, Def Leppard lost the raw rock sound, and kind of turned to pop. The only good album since Adrenalize imho was Yeah!, and that was a cover album.

  • @skulduggery1515 retro active...

  • To me, the best Rockin' song of Def Leppards. I think they should have included this on the "Adrenalize" Cd/Album. The Re-recorded version sounds a bit to polished for me as the original (with S. Clark) is more of a raw sound. My Opinion.. 8-)

  • Fitting last performance for steve. This is an awesome song. The only problem is, it shoulda been a bigger venue :)

  • I remember watching this live during the MTV video music awards that year. There was NOBODY bigger back then! Richard Lewis was trying to introduce them and Arsenio Hall would say "Def Leppard" every few seconds and the crowd would go nuts! At this piont, Def Leppard held the record for most consecutive days at #1 for the "Pour Some Sugar on Me" video on a daily "call-in" countdown show called "Dial MTV". THIS is what "Grunge" killed, making way for today's "Gangsta" rap!

  • @rickike72

totally remember that show and the #1 streak. Then one day out of nowhere Brittany Fox took the number one spot for one day. I was like WTF??!!

  • @theopeningset Is THAT who it was? It HAD to be "Girlschool" then! NOT my favorite song BUT, DEFINATELY my favorite video. It helped that the girl with the DARK brown hair looked like my THEN high school girlfriend, lol.

  • @rickike72

Yup, sure was. Good song but didn't deserve to beat out Def Leppard at the time. The very next day I think it dropped to like #12.

  • I think I remember reading that they HAD considered firing Steve, but in the end decided to give him 6 months hiatus to get himself straightened out. I don't remember where I read it, other than it was in a magazine, so likely "Heavy Metal" or something like that. Forgive my faulty memory, it WAS 20 years ago. The thing is, no, they did NOT approach other guitarists until after he had passed. And not even immediately after he died, because at first Phil seriously considered quitting without him.

  • i adored steve, but at the end of the song he goes to the front of the stage and it's as if joe grabs a hold of him so he wouldn't fall off.

he didn't look healthy at all, you could tell that he was already in a bad way then

  • @whitelightningfan if you watch more of their live stuff Joe does that all the time to all three of the them. He doesn't appear to be falling to me.

  • @tuacrahn

i know Joe dies that, but considering Steve's condition and his leap forward, it seems that way, doesn't it ?

  • ALL HAIL "THE TERROR TWINS on guitar!!"

RIP Steve, Miss ya bud....The band hasn't been the same since....

  • it sucks that steve is gone

  • this was steves last live performance with the band

  • whats going on with Joes trousers ? they are awful looks like he is some kind of gay painter !!!!

  • shitty audience

  • they sound pretty good live. Too bad steve isnt alive. i bet if he was def leppard wouldnt be what it is now

  • Def Leppard Poser Version. Disgusting as this band has become.

  • I,ll bet that Def Leppard could go back in time and change what happened to Steve (who wouldnt) Because they have never been the same since he died. No disrespect to Vivian but they lost more than a guitarist they lost a songwriter as well.

  • Geez this was right before they tossed Steve. There is a book out now that says another guitarist was contacted to replace Steve, looks like the BS *hiatus* the band said was really a firing same scenario as Pete. Only difference Steve died before it could happen.

  • @TrueSMCfan What's that book called?

  • @RobbyMennen

Brian Tatler - Am I Evil? - Diamond Head - The Music, The Myths and Metallica by Brian Tatler With John Tucker

  • @TrueSMCfan i dont think that really happened... cause phil and steve we're like brothers and after all the sucess they had with hysteria and what they knew steve was when he was sober, i dont think they'd toss him

  • @Crash1496 Good for you I do believe it because they did it to Pete. Don't care if you believe it or not.

  • @TrueSMCfan Yeah cause Pete was a hue jackass and they warned him time and time again that they would only give him one more chance. He came into the recording studio drunk and they wouldn't take it. Sav said it would just make them look silly because they constantly told him "oh ok, we'll give you 1 more chance" so they finally let him go. In the Ultimate Albums show they play his drunken solo and it was hilariously bad. Phil Collen is much better anyways.

  • @TrueSMCfan wow you are really mentally retarded. This never happened at all. LOL your a funny kid

  • @TrueSMCfan THEY NEVER TOSSED STEVE !!!!!

  • @whitelightningfan Oh and you know for fact? Even though it has been stated in a book they were approaching guitar players? I have quotes from mags and a BOOK that state they were looking for replacements during adrenalize they are on my channel. All DATES match up with Steve's *hiatus*. Try reading a BOOK or something will ya?

  • @TrueSMCfan Then tell me what this book's ttile is then. I notice in the comments here that i am not the only one who's asking.

  • @TrueSMCfan Yeah there is no doubt about that, they were ready to pull the trigger and fire him, either way, it didnt take them long to find out he was the one person in the band they couldnt replaced :-) RIP Steve

  • fuckin great song

  • STEVE CLARK IS THE BEST FREAKIN' GUITAR PLAYER IN THE HISTORY OF GUITAR PLAYERS!!! RIP STEVE STEAMIN' CLARK!!

  • yes he passed away in 1991

  • what is this song talking about?

  • GREAT BAND !!

  • Steve Clark's last ever live performance with the band....

  • @CFKMAN Indeed....RIP!!!!!!!!!!

  • did the guy in the all black suit say ''def leppar''

  • Yes, that guy is comedian Richard Lewis. I'll forgive him, because he's hilarious on Curb Your Enthusiasm.

  • Yeah.

  • seriously great song , i remember watching this n thinking , why didnt they put this on hysteria??????? they had a diff version on adrenalise which was watered down n no where near as good . maybe it was too rockin 4 hytseria ?def leppard where at there peak , they were the biggest band in the world

  • this was Steve's last performance with the band I believe. Terible loss....

  • This was Steve Clark's last live performance. =0(

  • This song is awesome!

  • it is...you wonder with the way Joe is kinda off..you wonder if they might have been having too much fun backstage. Some wine, women, and song. Hell...if I was in their shoes...I'd have done the exact same thing!

Great song by a great band

  • lol I didn't wonder about that but yeah it's the good stuff. ^^

  • his voice is shredded by 18 months on tour.

  • This is when the MTV Awards were cool, and played real music.

  • This is when MTV Awards were cool. This is the best band ever. Phil Collen can rock my world any day.

  • phil collen is the baddest rock guitar player..and cannot Steve Clark RIP..

Now Vivian Campbell..they all KICK ASS!!!!

  • There are some songs on Adrenalize that Steve plays, but not all songs

  • Joe has a nice butt ;)

  • I thought this song was off Adrenalize, if it was then Steve wouldn't be performing it! Doesnt anyone know what im not obviously figuring out?

  • The original version of "Tear It Down" was released as the B-Side on the 7' single of "Women." It was re-recorded and released on Adrenalize - same arrangement, but different recording.

  • Oh wow im stupid, THANKS

  • @DefKennyT In my opinion its the better version. Listened to it on the deluxe edition of Hysteria

  • @DefKennyT , this was a b side version off of hysteria

  • @DefKennyT

This was the first t.v. appearance after they had some time off. I think they had trouble in the studio but don't wuote me. It has been quite a long time. I remember seeing it live on t.v. and was cranking the t.v. It was shortly after this appearance (couple months??)Steve died.

Women was a great track. I bought Hysteria after hearing in in 87.

  • @DefKennyT Well done.

  • Yes twas off Adrenalize (which was many years in the making).

One of the last things Steve did with Def lep live....was this MTV?

  • i'm asking same question!! it would be perfect if clark would have record it instead of Phil recording both guitars

  • @defleppfan4ever Yes it was off Ardenalize but they did start recording Adrenazlize before Steve died!!

  • @newc1531

Steve Clark is the guiatarist on most of Adrenalize tracks. Def Leppard did not replace Clark until after the album was close to finished and they needed someone to tour with. Then Vivian Campbell was added, debuting at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert.

  • @newc1531 @newc1531

Steve Clark is the guiatarist on most of Adrenalize tracks. Def Leppard did not replace Clark until after the album was close to finished and they needed someone to tour with. Then Vivian Campbell was added, debuting at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert.

  • @noreplysoccer I dont think he was. I think collen played basically all guitar, but clark co-wrote a lot of the songs with the rest of the band

  • @noreplysoccer Steve Clark was already dead when they made Adrenalize. He co-wrote the album, but died before the recording, so Phil Collen played all guitar parts. They added Vivian Campbell when it was time to tour.

  • @defleppfan4ever this song was actually supposed to be on hysteria. they scrapped it. supposedly hysteria was more rocking of an album. they got rid of all the original songs and made the album that is out now.

  • did ya'll notice the music is pre-recorded and vocals are live? very interesting. I guess they call that semi-live

  • nah its all live. i thought it wasnt at first too. but compare it to the hysteria B side version. (the verson recorded at the time) its the second related video. the guitars have more reverb and the solos are noticeably different. plus the second "get ready!" before the choruses are late.

  • I don't think so, listen to the album version, a live version, and this, it is not live. It's exactly like the album version which they have never played live. Even the background vocals are pre-recorded, it's obvious.

  • i know its not the same as other live versions, but those were preformed in arenas...where its harder to mix the sound. ok, maybe the BV's are a little TOO good, but those guitars are live. listen to phils and steves solos, it is obvious that they are NOT the same. especially steves.

  • Listen to the original - it's different, no doubt, then listen to the Adrenalize version - this is the Adrenalize version - you can tell is a pre-record. 1) the vocals are not real 2) Phil cannot not shred in live solos, he would never play the solo this way live. This is the solo and version that ended up on Adrenalize. They've done plenty of pre-records, check out the Top of the Pops, it shouldn't be a surprise. This was probably recorded in studio and used for this performance - not live!

  • alright, first of all phil can shred on live solos, just watch some live stuff. he has played much harder solos live such as rock rock till you drop. but the important thing is that you are def right about the adrenalize version! i have actaully never heard that version before a couple minutes ago...so thats why i couldnt make the connection. it would have been helpful if you had mentioned that earlier! but thanks for the clarification.

  • Well it's funny, you got me to listen to it again, and it did not sound like the original, I was wrong about that. The solo is similar but Phil uses more harmonics in the Adrenalize version so I went back and listened to it again. So you were right, it wasn't the original version. But I said Phil CAN shred. He can't control himself is what I'm saying, he could not play this solo so controlled live, that's why you can tell it's a pre-record, he shreds every solo he gets a hold of. cheers!

  • i agree that the background vocals were probably pre-recorded given the fact that you can definitely hear Joe's vocals in there but what really gives it away as a (mostly) live performance is his lead singing which is not quite uh, shall we say, "good" lol

  • they've admittedly done plenty of lip syncing over the years, I'm not knocking them for it, just pointing out that in this case everything but Joe's vocals were pre-taped. Listen to it again, then listen to the Adrenalize version, it's exact. And Phil would never play the solo exactly like that live, he would have shredded it to death like he does every other solo. And yes, Joe's vocals were really bad, but that's like saying bad sex is bad.

  • Actually, the backing track is from the b-side Hysteria sessions, so it's not the same as the Adrenalize version. You're points stands though that the band and backup vocals are prerecorded. This was common practice for any European band who did TOTP, which usually lip synced everything. Only America has a problem with that kinda stuff.

  • All the bands who performed that night did the same thing, when The Cult went on only Ian's vocals were live and the band played with a backing track. Search for The Cult Fire Woman you'll see it.

  • Bama your facts are well out of order. This IS NOT studio version quality. If you think it is then you don't have an ear for music and need to STFU. "Exact" as the Adrenalize version huh? You're retarded AND deaf.

  • dude, you are an idiot, I've been playing guitar for 20 years, and was in a band. I guarantee I have a better ear than you. Joe's voice is live. The music is pre-record. I'm guessing you think their Top of the Pops performances are live too? They admittedly pre-record and lip sync on that show. Listen to Tear it Down, just the music and solo, then listen to the Adrenalize version, it's the same exact thing, Phil would never play the solo exactly as it is. Dumbass.

  • Only twenty years? Rook. I've forgotten more about playing guitar than you will ever learn. You were in "a band". Okay, great. Congratulations! I've been in two. So what?

  • well, you are clearly an angry dude, sorry you didn't make it with 2 bands, I was just having fun with mine. But if you just want to post comments to put people down, guess it makes you feel better.

Anyone with half an ear can listen to both recordings and tell the music is a pre-record.

  • Not angry about anything. I've got a great career now - that doesn't include musical performance - and am perfectly happy with life, family, friends, etc. I only jam on occasion with a few buds, nothing serious. And...don't want derogatory comments? Stop posting in a way that lets the world know that you are uneducated. Cheery-O. =)

  • then you're just a dick

  • Dude! You STILL aren't trying your best. Capital "T" in "then" and some punctuation for good measure at the end. But then it would not matter because it's a sentence fragment and not a complete thought. I bet you've had it rough in life with incomplete thoughts huh? That's what makes a below-average intelligence person like yourself. I may be a dick, but I'm a dick with two degrees, a fine education, and have a job that's recession proof. Cheery-O. =)

  • all that education and you still can't tell the music part of Tear it Down was a pre-record. What a waste of money.

  • Hey idiot, the vocals AND melody (arrangement) ARE music. Stupid.

    1. The art of arranging sounds in time so as to produce a continuous, unified, and evocative composition, as through melody, harmony, rhythm, and timbre.

    2. Vocal or instrumental sounds possessing a degree of melody, harmony, or rhythm.

    3. An aesthetically pleasing or harmonious sound or combination of sounds.

  • And it could be a pre-recorded arrangement of the non vocal parts but you don't know that for sure. Hey moron, have you ever seen the Scorpions live? Probably not kid, but Klaus dosen't party hard like an asshole, neither did the other guys and they are AMAZING live! They had self-respect like Def Leppard did [does] so maybe, just maybe this is 100% live. Who knows? Who cares? You're still a brainless moron anyway. =)

  • It is the same as the 1990 single version, listen, no additional guitar parts except for the solo. Adrenalized version has the additional guitar parts.

  • Adrenalized version didn't come out til 1992, this was 1990.

  • plus the fact that he sings off-key a little in some places! : )

  • You're right, his vocals are live. But everything else is pre-record. I don't know why everyone gets so upset at this, it's just like shooting a video, they don't do those live. Top of the Pops is admittedly lip sync. It's not a bid deal, I'm sure they just couldn't set up a live show for Tear it Down with all the equipment they needed.

  • I remember this...Motley Crue's backround was pre-recorded too.

  • oops i meant vocals haha

  • Wow! This is awesome. I've never seen this one before. They all look good, and it's nice to see footage of Steve! Great! Thanks for posting it!

  • This is from the 1989 VMA's.

  • just after...excuse me

  • omg! When was this? I sware, must have been just before Rick lost his arms...

  • this was steves last concert... r.i.p.

  • it might be pre-taped but on the Hysteria album in the bsides I dont know if its just the deluxe edition you cant even hear Steve's solo at the end, but here you can

  • exactly! phil's solo sounds live too. in fact, ALL the guitars are live. you can tell right at the beginning, before the drums kick in, the pick slide is different than the original! the background vids seem a little too good though, but the lepps are known for good ones..

  • I miss the 80's, the sound, the tight leather/spandex pants those hot rockers wore...the long hair...I wish it would all come back

  • Yep, Joe's voice is the only live thing, the music is pre-taped. Pretty easy to do with electric drums too.

  • i wouldnt say they suck live....watch the in the round in your face vids...

  • I've got EVERYTHING DL has ever released. I just don't like them live plain and simple.

  • ok suit yourself...

and did u give me thumbs down because i said they didnt suck live? most DL fans would agree they dont suck live...to me they sound close to..if not better than the studio versons...for example photograph from in the round '88. i dont know how u could think that sounds bad...but hey, thats your opinion and i respect it.

  • I am just a sucker for overpolished music. Nothing personal.

  • yup understood. all that matters is that Def Leppard has great songs and albums.

  • @Hysteria87x Yup, and the Dortmund 1983, Japan 1999, various other live videos like Hamilton 1988, they are/were one of the best live bands out there. Joe's voice isn't as good now, but back on topic, yeah this is what MTV did for a while as well as other tv shows like american bandstand, top of the pops, etc. Back then playback was like a requirement. =|

  • Actually, the only thing live here is Joe's vocals. The music track and background vocals are clearly pre-recorded tracks. Nothing against the band, that's just the way MTV did things back in the day.

  • "Did" things?

Ha they still do it! Just about everything is pre-recorded now.

Trust me, been there, seen it , heard it, saw it.

  • It sounds like Def leppard like how this live version sounded that they recreated it for the studio version on the "Adrenalize" album. the original B-side version on the "Women" single (in the USA) and the "Animal" single (rest of world) is awesome as well.

  • @DefKennyT Def Leppard have a long standing policy dating to the "On Through The Night" lp to not use background vocals.

  • They are not lip syncing and they are most certainly playing, def leppard use layering vocals along with layering instrumental tracks when they play live so it can sound as close to the studio version as possible. If you don't know what to listen for it can appear that they are phoning it in. But trust that they have been around way to long to be able to get away with that sort of tom foolery.

  • LOVE THIS SONG!! <3 :D

  • last presentation of steve clark in 1989 of tv show mtv music awards

  • Sorry to poop on everybody's parade but Joe is the only one actually performing. The rest of the band is lip/play syncing. Kinda like karaoke...

  • No They're not...You've never been to a real Def Leppard concert...You don't know if they were or not...

  • hay playback en el verso "tear it down"...pero a los def leppard se les perdona todo

  • I saw these one on MTV Awards when i was little. They didn't win any awards that time. Sorry for themo !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • very sexy.

  • Oh and denim! and bandanas!

  • damn you can bearly hear the backing vocals! Thats what DEF LEPPARD about, that and big hair, and just beening an awesome band!

  • Steve is the reason I wanna play guitar.

  • Steve is the reason I started playing guitar too

  • Steve was very underrated, The songs I'm learning, I'm trying to learn his parts and some of them are really tough

  • Is it my imagination or is Steve looking a little out of shape? Well, the camera-man isn't giving him much attention so it's really hard to tell. Knowing now this was to be his last performance you kinda wish the'y had filmed only him....

17 years and it's still sad.

  • like fat? no way. steve was always the long and lean string bean (haha) guy of the group. especially here, because this was around the time when he was really in deep depression. he's just wearing a frilly shirt.

  • Definitely not fat, he just kept getting skinnier and skinnier. I mean exactly what you're mentioning - not feeling well mentally, and most likely hung-over.

  • Yeah, sorry. I should've thought about how you can be too skinny and be outta shape. lol. sorry.

But yeah I totally agree, he just looks so helpless. :(

  • A terrible loss. My approach to guitar playing is very similar to Steves too. Altho my musical preferences are much darker. Think a cross between Steve Clark and Darth Vader.

  • Having a hard time imagening that :-) Haven't you got something posted on YouTube?

  • Joe, on the other hand, is getting chubby already in this video. Saw him just a week ago and he IS fat. Too bad, he used to be such a hottie.

  • Whatever, is Joe Elliott.

  • this song was recorded during the Hysteria sessions, and was a b-side to Animal in the UK and Women in the US. It was then re-recorded and put on Adrenalize

  • steve clark would be gone in two years after this video was this a song that did not make hysteria or was it for adrenalize?

  • this song is awesome [:

  • I wish they would play this one on there current tour.......

  • This song won't save the world, clean out my closet, feed the children, and/or bring peace in the middle east, but it sure is fun to jam to.

And who gives a @#$# about how hard it is to play? Just because something is harder to play doesn't mean it sounds better.

  • All these hard bands today, should take notes on how a rock star should dress. Observe how Joe Elliott dresses like a ROCK STAR! Now in days, they just dress like an average joe (no pun intended).

  • This performace is fm the 1989 MTV Music Video Awards!

  • Last TV performance of Steve...

  • i think vivian cambell said this song was a piece of shit...

  • Yeah Him too. xD!

  • yeah, he did say something like that, i think because it's requires no challenge to play it. he said it's just a "simple A riff" they're using if i recall. but i still enjoy listening to it.

  • i think this song rocks. what happend to good music. these kids nowdays. rap sucks.

  • 03:25-03:33

    Maybe the greatest moment ever.

  • agreed.

  • FANTASTIC!

  • i cant stop of watching this.

    too much Energy

    Gosh.!

  • One of the Best songs ever. =]

  • Haha, I *think* Richard called them "Def Lepper"?

  • Didn't see it mentioned here, but the original version of this song (not the Adrenalize version) was finally officially released on the 2-disc expanded edition of Hysteria last year. I'm glad for that as I preferred the original. Heard it on the radio at the time--I think DJs agreed it was too good a song to pass up.

  • No way is the backing music all from a recording--those instrumental tracks are all different from what's on record. The backing vocals are definitely pre-recorded, but most everything else sounds live, amps or no amps. (Wireless to mixer to house PA/broadcast mixer, probably.) Still kind of astounding that this was a B-side--maybe it was too straight-ahead rock, left out in favor of the poppier tunes on the album (Excitable, Don't Shoot Shotgun, Pour Some Sugar)? Personally I prefer this tune.

  • And BTW, is this the last song Steve ever played Live? :(

  • y-e-s...i'm crying!! what a way to go out steve! I LOVE YOU!!!

  • I want to cry:( Steve plays it perfectly. I wish the original version was on "Adrenalize"

  • Love the band, like this song - learnt to play it when I was 17 on the guitar and know it inside out - the backing is 100% off the album, Joe is 100% live. This is just what a lot of groups do when they play TV shows. Enjoy a piece of history!

  • in the UK this was also the b-side to Animal as Women wasn't released here as a single

  • I hate to step in on this riveting conversation, but I'm afraid I'm going to delete your comments because they are a little mean spirited. Let's keep the comments to a professional level, shall we?

  • I'm sorry I stated an opinion and I was attacked by those 2 guys so I returned in kind. They started calling me names and I'm not one to back down from a fight please accept my apology

  • only joe is singing live the rest is the backing track. but its not the band's fault. whenever a band plays on tv,(from what ive seen) they always do it that way for some reason.

  • It sounds like the vocals are live but the band is playing to a track. Disappointing.

  • no i think it's all live. the drums and bass definatly are. and the backing vocals get quiter when steve isn't singing

  • There are no guitar or bass amps. This is a dead give away...the band is faking it. I mix live sound for a living. I know when it's fake. It seems Joe Elliott was the only one who had enough integrity to perform that night.
