  • lou gehrig is very modest

  • Why do people who comment always use foul language?

Can't they speak in a civil tongue?

Who needs to hear their guff?

  • ''I love the movie for this''!''This is my new favorite movie i just watched in school!!''

  • Is that Bill Dickey on Cooper's right? Looks an awful lot like him.

  • I reading about him

  • Nine people have a fucking problem with themselves.

  • Fucking shit that was sad :/

  • The 2000's already going down as the century of assholes and fucking crybabies who have to complain about something and everything. If you don't like the movie(which is still a classic) and will be long after you shuffle off this earth don't watch it and move on. Enough of the crying.

  • @RichardElden No, he was one of the best actors that Hollywood ever had, like Gregory Peck.

  • @RichardElden I think YOU are a dated piece of crap.

  • @RichardElden You don't like Gary Cooper, ha? You goddamn son of a bitch...

  • Lou Gehrig I herd he to me being Yankees fan, is my favorite Yankees of all time. I herd he was great with the fans unlike Joe D, he was nice guy the old timers teal me. Joe D was first class jerk and cheap I herd.

Lou Gehrig your number 4 should be retired as with Roberto Clemente's 21 I agree redsoxrok34

  • Just Sad, Lou Gehrig this man life was cut way to short.

Great Baseball player. Lou Gehrig was great ball player and just nice guy.

    RIP Lou Gehrig

  • not quite historically accurate...

  • He had such an amazing attitude in the face of such a horrible disease. His body was rapidly breaking down, but his mind was perfectly intact the whole time, like some horrible prison that he couldn't escape. In light of all this, he was still able to dwell not on the immense suffering that lay ahead of him, but on all the blessings he'd received in his life.

If he'd been given life experiences that afforded him such an amazing perspective, he WAS the luckiest man on the face of the earth.

  • R.I.P., Columbia Lou. Roar Lion, Roar!

  • i dont like baseball but let me tell you guys that ive never heard, rest in peace lou gehrig

  • as much as i dislike the yankees this is one of the greatest speeches ever given

  • he is my fav baseball player R.I.P. Henry Lou Gehrig may ur life of baseball live on!

  • Cant this be in color

  • @TOKYO999100 why?

  • He was a great player he is awesomeI love u so much. I hope we are ok. I do know what u mean that you and I need more we time. We have to work together to find that time. I'm sorry I got defensive last night. I just felt like I needed to defend myself. I want so much to marry u and be one together. I love u that much babe. I hope you had a safe flight. Please let me know you want the same.

  • While I fully support MLB retiring #42 in favor of Jackie Robinson, I think the list should also include Gehrig's #4 and Roberto Clemente's 21. There are some players who just transcend human greatness.

And yes, I am a diehard Red Sox fan, offering praise for a Yankees player, for whom I have unending respect

  • This is a great classic movie. But I think they should do a remake, and I think it should be called something else like "Lou Gehrig's Legend" or something like that, because really even here I don't like the name of the movie. Not because I hate the Yankees its because it just isn't a movie about the Yankees pride. Its about Lou Gehrig (RIP forgive douche bags like Barry Bonds for they spit on your grave).

  • @southparkfan2717 lou gehrigs legend? thats the dumbest thing ive ever heard

  • @southparkfan2717 I don't believe that they should ever do a remake of the movie. Nothing is more touching then the great performance by actor Gary Cooper-Truly a Classic-It is about Pride "I Consider Myself the Luckiest my on the face of the Earth" that's pride

  • we wacthed this in class lol

  • If you're going to call someone out you should at least proofread your comment (@illhollywood)

  • God how horribly sad. This almost made me cry. I hate when the good people have to die unjustifiably. RIP Lou Gehrig. You were a great man.

  • Yeah-

  • i saw this movie in class today :D

  • he would have had a been better off as a DODGER!!!!

  • @illhollywood oh fuck you .

  • @illhollywood not really dodgers are idiots

  • @illhollywood correction dodgers fans are idiots dodger players ugh

  • i do not comprehend ONE reason why even one person would dislike this

  • Lou Gehrig // A classier man never walked a ball field // Hands down. In that area the babe doesn't hold a candle to him... Lou Gehrig... RIP !!!

  • you can tell Babe Ruth face was digitized because it looks so fake.

  • @Bxracers actually from what I read that really is the babe he portrayed himself for this movie

  • @Bxracers babe was actually in the movie, i watched it

  • @Bxracers This picture was made in 1942, when computers were still largely theoretical. This may have been and old "process" shot, and perhaps Babe looks a little off because he he was a bit older when he recreated this moment for the movie, but that's him.

  • @Bxracers ..Digitizing didn't exist back then. And Babe was in the movie..

  • im doing him for my biography

  • how could anyone have disliked this video? this is the most inspirational speech of all time.

  • A recreation of a classic moment that became a classic itself, and a tribute to TWO of our greatest Americans, Lou Gehrig and Gary Cooper.

  • " and yet today, i consider myself the luckiest man in the face of the earth" Too touching

    RIP Lou Gehrig

  • wow what is the big deal about this guy didnt he die

  • This always makes me cry

  • As far as I know, the newsreels did not capture the entire real speech, so all we have is the chopped-up version also available on YouTube, which is not quite in sync with the transcript shown in the newspapers. While Cooper's version isn't quite the same -- the key line comes at the end, rather than the beginning as it really was -- it doesn't matter, as he captures the essence of what Gehrig said.

What does matter is that, while Cooper looked like Gehrig, he didn't look like a ballplayer.

  • Will SOMEONE show the ENTIRE, REAL speech? NOT the Pride of the Yankees' Hollywood version?

  • Is that Babe in the background?

  • @MistfulRain yeah

  • I have Lou Gherig's book....and I believe Gary Cooper gave all heart and soul to Lou's speech.

  • this was still good but not very close to the original

  • Ahh, this is excellent.

  • During WWII, Gary Cooper entertained troops in the South Pacific as part a USO tour. Because requested by the servicemen, Cooper recited this speech at the end of performances.

  • Lou ur soo much more than the Iron Horse and a baseball player :) ur a Hero! and not just 2 baseball, but 2 the world!

  • :(

  • What year did he say this?

  • gay

  • @kkiselgof keep you nasty opinions to your self and let lou give one of the best speeches of all time

  • @MrBuckize i meant the movie, not the speech

  • imma red sox fan but i gotta give it up to Lou.. one of the best

  • this videos was touching but slow and short

  • babe ruth right behind him

  • Fucking piece of shit disease killed my loving Mom. God Bless her. 12 years this past Jan. Courage....showed me how to face death like a human being. She never wavered, never felt sorry, to the end put people ahead of her....used to break my heart...and still does...God Bless You Lou Gehrig..and finally, watch HBO sports, they might be figuring some of the causes. Thank you Jesus.

  • There is so small amount of time to help your loved one.I mean...Doctor giving her the penalty.Trying to talk her down while driving home from the hospital.Stayed with my mom till the end.Died at age 65.

Id' wipe out the planet to cure it you know? I pray the find a cure. Looking like they are finding causes, which in turn could lead to something. Check out the latest in HBO Sports.

  • this man cries' at this scene is the only one!

  • @091558yew Well..I think we all do.

  • poor lou rip i think of his sportmeship when i play sports

  • Weak. they could have at least honored Gehrig by having Cooper recite the real speech.

  • what the heck. this isnt even close to his speach.

  • @xxcowsxx from what i remember hearing, his entire speech was not filmed, just the beginning and end. so what you can see of him in the old film is not all there was.

  • @numberonefilmfan - you can find the words/text of the entire speech online and read it... the "luckiest man on the face of the earth" was actually the second sentence... the speech was just altered for dramatic effect in the movie...

  • that was a fail it was 17 years and that wasnt the speach not even close

  • Seriously a great movie I own it on DVD and Gary Cooper dose a great Lou Gehrig

  • R.I.P my brother you were the best basball player ever

  • The iron horse. So strong and beautiful. I want to marry him.

  • "Today-ay ay, I consider my self-self self, the luckiest man-man man on the face of the earth-earth earth." I love you Lou! Rest in peace! Your #1!!!!!!!!

  • i heard this movie from school that he died in his 37th b-day ppl in my class felt sorry for him.

  • r.i.p. lou gehrig

  • R.IP lou gehrig

  • RIP gehrig

  • Jays fan likin' Gehrig!

  • RIP Lou Gehrig

  • @resdsox1 as well as Gary Cooper

  • question: was that the real speech cuz' it doesn't sound like it.

  • its a movie u can tell because the audience is completely scilenced and by the background

  • No, it was Gary Cooper playing Lou Gehrig in the movie

  • R.I.P Lou Gehrig or iron house

  • "But today, I consider the luckiest man on the face of the earth. Thank you." was a real famous speech in 1929.

Lou held the record of 70 Grand-Slams for 70 years now.

Lou clamed he was the luckiest man on the earth, because before he screwed up, he had lots and lots of luck, depending on his batting average.

  • actually, he said the speech in '39 not '29. and he holds the record for grand slams at 23. What are you talking about, "he screwed up," ?!?! Lou did no such thing. He was given, "a bad break," and he faced it like a man.

Lou Gehrig- the greatest ballplayer and role model of good sportsmanship to kids to ever live!

  • Comment removed

  • Great performance, but you can't beat the real thing.

  • If you have never seen Pride of the Yankees you should not be criticizing. Great movie!!!

PS. The fucking faggot is Gary Cooper. He did an AMAZING job in that movie

  • You have problems. Cooper isn't a "faggot." He played the part well. Shut the fuck up.

  • Well. supposedly he had a live-in relationship with a well-known actor back in the 30s. He was all-man though, a reportedly good guy and terrific actor.

  • Lou is the greatest.

  • RIP Lou and Gary.

  • as well as cooper performers this i cant get over how lou's voice echoes through yankee stadium when he say "today i consider myself the luckest man on the face of the earth"

  • This speech always makes me cry... Coop does such a good job.

  • An added irony here is that Gary Cooper himself suffered an untimely death at age 60, from prostate cancer.

  • Yea the movie speech is very different from the real one. He comments on the same things but in a different order and with totally different choice of words.

Unfortunately no recordings of the original speech exist, just the first and last sentence.

  • I heard this speech in the movie was defferent from Gehrigs origenal one.

  • Yes it was, in the original speech, the "Luckiest man" quote is in the beginning

  • babe in background lol

  • This movie was amazing, when I was about five, my older brother and I used to steal the small TV in our kitchen and watch this late at night. We'd always end up crying, and no matter how many times I see this, I get chocked up

  • Yankee's have no pride anymore they tore there stadium down to build a bigger one for money...

    That's not baseball!!

  • they didt tare it down

  • this isnt lou HMPHHH!

  • Canada DRY!

  • well this is how it really happened.

  • Gary Cooper did a swell job with the speech. Almost like Gehrig himself doing the speech.

Don't they look sort of alike?

  • Cooper looked kinda like everyman. No wonder he played John Doe the same year, and Sergeant York, and others.

  • Of course this is Gary Cooper in the movie about Lou Gehrig. It was a heart wrenching film!!

  • I love you Lou. I started to cry because of this video. P.S. my class is reading this book!!!

  • Is this a movie,or real thing?

  • this is the movie, Pride of the Yankees.

    great movie!

  • Wrestlingfan, this is a movie but it is about a real man who died of ALS. Speaches many ball players make today are about signing bonus'. Players like Lou Gehrig and WWII vet Ted Williams rarely exist now.

  • @novusmundi

but some of them DO still exist, for example Derek Jeters farewell speech to the old Yankee Stadium

    /watch?v=HJrlTpQm0to

  • Baseball and America need someone like Lou Gehrig more than ever.

    A true legend and hero.

  • Actually his speech was actually pretty much what the movie dictates

  • Why didn't they just make it short and meaningful, like THE ORIGINAL, instead of putting in the rest of this mumbo-jumbo that he NEVER SAID.

  • You are completely wrong. This is his speech verbatim. You have never heard the whole thing cause the clips you see just say how he is the luckiest man on the face of the earth. Look it up.

  • idk about the rest but they left out the last line

  • A classic.

  • :)

    luckiest man aliveee

  • Nice bandwagoning

  • The Yankees are awesome. But Now I have to like the phillies or else people will think I'm wierd since I live in PA

  • why would people think your wierd? i know alot of people who live in Pa and in philly who hate the phillies reguardless of the world series win. I live in SNJ and i'm a avid yankees fan win or lose... GO YANKS!!!!

  • We love you Lou, and you were one of the greatest ball players that ever walked this earth. R.I.P.

  • what did his wife say when he died cuz i read a book lou gehrig the luckiest man in my school and it almost brought me to tears i cant belive he died im goonna watch the vid on the side lou gehrig grave

  • dude my school has the book too !

  • i read that book in fourth grade.wait im in fourth grade!

  • wow the real speech was about 20 seconds

  • The actual speech he says 17 years, not 16. Great work, Hollywood!

  • super dooper
