My dear Mum passed away 14 years ago today and I had no doubt about choosing this for one of her funeral hymns...she was the most valiant person I have ever had the privilege to know
Since, Lord, Thou dost defend us with Thy Spirit, We know we at the end, shall life inherit. Then fancies flee away! I’ll fear not what men say, I’ll labor night and day to be a pilgrim.
He who would valiant be ’gainst all disaster, Let him in constancy follow the Master. There’s no discouragement shall make him once relent His first avowed intent to be a pilgrim.
Who so beset him round with dismal stories Do but themselves confound—his strength the more is. No foes shall stay his might; though he with giants fight, He will make good his right to be a pilgrim.
The version I know starts with: Oh, he who valiant be, let him come hither. At least that's how it was sung in the English speaking Catholic church in Amsterdam. I used to go to their service when it was still at the chapel in the center of Amsterdam. Unfortunately they had to move, because the venue was to small for the congregation. The service started at 12.15 and by 12 o'clock it would be standing room only...
This is a marvelous hymn that not to many of the younger people know. This was a beautiful interpretation. I usually take it faster with stronger accents on the dotted rhythms. Great Job!
picture this.... milton boys high school... bulawayo zimbabwe, last day of school as we go for holidays.... 700 boys excited and singing the last hymn at the last assembly for another month of holidays.....then as it ends, a loud cheer, and off we go noisly happily ... nostalgic. Going with God.... with a slight tear in my eye for i will miss them all..... teachers students friends and bullies.... life was once so good.
Wow! This takes me back to '92 when Mr Zulu used to make us sing it again and again until we got it right (sometimes missing our break). Fond memories that will stay with me forever. I love this hymn though it sounds like i was sung by some toffs...
Thankyou. We play modern hymns at our church and I enjoy playing them, but I remember singing this great inspirational hymn ay primary school from big paper hymn sheets that used to hang from the wall!! Youtube is great!!!

The 1st 2 verses of the lyric are:----
He who would valiant be ’gainst all disaster, Let him in constancy follow the Master. There’s no discouragement shall make him once relent His first avowed intent to be a pilgrim.
Who so beset him round with dismal stories Do but themselves confound—his strength the more is. No foes shall stay his might; though he with giants fight, He will make good his right to be a pilgrim.

I know this one to a different tune, St. Dunstan; while I like this one, I prefer the other.
