Avalanche and Hospital Music albums are landmarks on my playlist. Just very f*cking good stuff and the Avalanche tune particularly was the catalysor of all my interest towards Matthew Good. Especially the part starting at 3:36.
@raptorculiacan Yeah not many at all listen. I mean he tours a few places near the border, but no where major. Which is a shame. But whatever, Yanks miss out on tons of great Canadian music; Matt Good, Tragically Hip, Barenaked Ladies, and so on.
@raptorculiacan I'm American as well and own five albums; I just can't get enough...and I've noticed the older I get the more I'm listening to him. Yes, it is a shame how underrated he is (whether he likes it or not) and the crap that sells the most here in the states.
My interpretation of it, is that the titular avalanche, symbolises an unpleasant cascade of emotions brought on by something he never thought would affect him. e.i. one foot in front of the other, simply progressing through life, keeping emotionless, essentially, walking, then suddenly, something disturbed the snow, and the result brought wreckage and buried everything in it's path. And what that something was, is subject to interpretation.
I like how his song can relate to everyone, like its about his personal struggle in life and I guess everyone elses and when you listen to it, you can say yeah I've felt like this and it helps you feel better. like the personal avlanche tearing him apart. He is so honest in each of his words and songs. Hes such an amazing artist and I wish people in the Uk would apprecitate his music more :/
I had this playing in the background just now, while I was searching out other stuff, and it dumbfounded me. The male brain can only take so much stimulation, as we know. and this song is SO good it just drained my cranial CPU of its ability to function. Well, that and the wine I drank.
Try looking up some of his older stuff from before MGB. Some of his best work, with a certain rawness that works well. Umbrellaless, Folk Singer, Requiem for Rosemary, Heather's Like Sunday and Go Fly Blind are ones I would recommend.
I really do not know why, but this song means so very much to me. It's such a beautiful song, it always makes me wanna cry and smile at the same time. I get a really unique vibe/feeling from it. This one should be heard on my funeral.
I am just getting into his music. Are there any recommendations on where to start? I am more inclined to like acoustic-centered songs like the beginning of this one. Thanks!
also get vancouver. Beautiful orchestra sound to it and very meaningful lyrics. You can really tell he's political and intellegent through it was well. It's his newest one next to hospital music
I'm almost jealous. To experience it all for the first time will be exciting. Matty Good is nothing short of amazing. Make sure you listen to EVERYTHING you can get your hands on. As jcdriol said, Hospital Music is a great place to start, as is Vancouver.
@rgopp Thanks for all of the recommendations! You fans have truly helped me enjoy yet another great Canadian artist. I'm going to see him live in July at the Ottawa Bluesfest. Should be a great time!
@emptystheme but of course, you should give all of his music a try =) I couldn't stand Avalanche at first, but it ended up becoming my favourite song! There are other songs that I initially didn't like, so I didn't listen to them for a while. Then when I listened to them again after a period of not doing so, I found that I really enjoyed them!
@emptystheme i found that with this song to and maybe a couple others.. but mostly loved them all from the start. thats why i love matt good because his music is subliminal in a sense of discuising alot of meaning and awsome music then it hits you and like boom. then you get hooked right in and like "POW" and you listen some more and like..."KABOOOOM" ............. ".KERPOWW"
@mikewtp holy crap wish i would i would of saw this comment along time ago. pick up everything matthew good right from the start download buy it find some way its all or nothing baby... ahhhh avalanche down through the treess. its all good.
@mikewtp His greatest hits package comes with an all acoustic CD - Fantastic acoustic renditions of some of his finest work. Definitely starting with 'Avalanche' though will properly introduce you to the genius of Matt Good's song writing, at the peak of his brilliance.
@mikewtp pick up Last of the Ghetto Astronauts, and Underdogs. those two albums are needed period for ultimate matthewgoodness. and Avalanche will always be a favorite :D
Matthew Good is a lyrical/musical genius. I think so many people can relate to his lyrics, and his music is always catchy. How can you NOT love his music? And Avalanche is ALSO one of my favorite MGB songs.
Matthew Good's stuff with the band was too similar to other bands in the alternative grunge genre at the time, like Our Lady Peace and I Mother Earth. There were some good songs from those days, and I like that band better than pretty more than their contemporaries.
But his solo stuff is much more diverse, unique and meaningful. I think Hospital Music and Avalanche are his best.
I wasn't really into matthew good or matthew good band, i didnt mind his music but once i listened to avalanche fully(the album) right then and there he became one of my favorite artist's. his music is something rare to come across. in my opinion i guess.
I dunno about that... I consider Beautiful Midnight his masterpiece, even after all his great solo stuff. It hit so many awesome notes throughout, and had some pretty amazing songs that I don't think he's topped since (Suburbia, Giant, A Boy and His Machine Gun, Born To Kill, I Miss New Wave).
Definitely different than his solo work, but still pure and great Matt.
Beautiful Midnight was a weird album for me. He DID have some amazing songs on there (and you actually listed exactly all the songs I like off that album). But there were a lot of songs I really didn't like. The radio hits in particular and especially Load Me Up. I don't know why so many long time fans love that song, I always thought it was really subpar to what the man has potential for, both lyrically and musically. Whereas on Avalanche per se, every song, except maybe Double Life, is great.
Yeah, I can see where that's coming from and I guess I kinda agree with it, though it does break the... how do I put it in correct English? well it's a heavy song in my opinion and the movie dialogue does break that a bit, which is sometimes very welcome to me. Depends on how I feel when listening :)
@xTashiiTash ive been listening to him the last 2 years now.saw him in winnipeg last fall.he is absolutely amazing! i dont even listen to anybody else anymore. no point hes got it all!im a grown man and i as well get shivers when he sings!

@jcdriol I'd say start with Underdog and Beautiful midnight. But you want acoustic. You should really start at the beginning to be honest.

@mikewtp Personally, I started with the Avalanche album, and I loved it. A lot. Like jcdriol said though, Hospital Music is excellent as well.

I would agree, I read once from a secondhand source that he felt this was his opus. Easy to justify if it were in fact a truthful statement.
The ONLY black mark on the whole thing in my book is the movie dialogue excerpt. Woefully outta place in this masterpiece.
