This guy can do no wrong musically in my book. This song is one of his best and I can listen to this everyday without tire. Rufus is one in 7 billion.
@rodrigortigao, how I feel your pain... this song always reminded me of my relationship with my father, and now he suddenly passed away last wednesday... just when I felt I started to get to know him for real. Listening to this song hurts like hell. So why am I listening to it, three times in a row?
Rufus a un réel talent pour dévoiler ses émotions à travers ses magnifiques chansons. L'entendre chanter que son père lui manque est tellement touchant...
The audio doesn't quite do justice to the enormity and richness of his voice, but thanks for posting. All Rufus contributions are greatly appreciated!
I am reading Rufus' biography, and before i read it, i never liked this song. until i read that this was a song about his Father, and saying he wants to 'conquer' him. then i listened to the lyrics....very amazing. Rufus seems angry at the beginning (lyric-wise)
This song is about his struggles with the relationship he has with his dad... it is possibly the most heartfelt and painful songs he has. The fact that Keane did a cover kind of irritates me but at the same time no one can compare to Rufus, he is so amazing on his own. I dont think anyone can hold a candle to his talent and beauty. He definitely has an underrated grace and artistry that very few have been lucky enough to witness. I adore this man with every fiber of my being.
Hearing Rufus W. sing so openly and honestly, and beautifully has made me want to change my attitude to life. For the better I hope. I learn from the artists who share themselves with the world
Rufus Wainwright quite simply makes me love music. He also has this vibe that I really get into--that New Yorker, street-inspired kind of bohemian whateverness. You know what I'm talking about, or you should, in your own way.
This is a great song... I first heard Keane's cover of it and didn't realize it was Rufus's. I still like their cover more, but the songwriting is amazing. kudos to him. :)
@mrami9994 Try listening to Loudon Wainwright III's (Rufus' father) albums. There is a documentary called One Man Guy on YouTube as well which shows them together when Rufus was a teenager.
It is. It's about a huge arguement they had when Rufus was on some photo shoot. He made some comment about how Loudon was only known because of Rufus. They had a huge fight and Rufus wrote this about it.
Covers are never ever ever ever as good as the original. this song is one of Rufus's most personal songs, and a cover wouldnt do it justice. I do love Keane though, they are really talented, but a cover of this song is nothing compared to the original.
I love this song...it's so powerful that it sometimes makes me too sad to even listen to it. Rufus Wainwright is completely underrated, but the fans who do follow him are very loyal. It's like we have this special secret that the world has yet to discover.
Jesus, 19755, get over yourself. Is the Rufus's fan base as precious as the singer-songwriter himself? The guy's on a national TV show (one of many I might add). How underrated can he be? Want to see a fellow Canadian songwriter who is truly underrated and whose talents eclipses that of the overwrought Mr. Wainwright? Check out Ron Sexsmith.
@semihalf07 The song is for his Dad.In response to the songs,he wrote about him as a kid.His Dad and Mother were on the folk scene in America and Canada.
They eat & drink (toast)Magazines (some thing-who knows) Got us started up (provoked argument)I was told to go (kicked him out maybe) One who must leave (he had to walk away from it) You left me (His Dad left him)Daddy want to see tears in your eyes. (did I hurt you or vice versa) You loved me (you & mom split up but you continued to love me.) See what happens to a song when you do a post mortem on it-destroyed!
"You loved me (you & mom split up but you continued to love me.)"
actually, his father was never supportive of him, certainly not about his homosexuality. During his addiction, Rufus said of his father, "I needed an asshole to yell at me." All he's saying is that he always thought that his dad hurt him, but really he just hurt himself.
widilpoo, you've got it! For the longest time I thought it was a love song, then that one line got to me personally, my relationship with my Dad, and it all made sense.
I never tire of hearing this song, it has to be one of best songs ever writen. And Rufus is in such good voice, giving it all its emotional impact... (dab teary eyes) Thank you for posting this video.
Little disappointed he he left off the closing reprise of the opening verse - my favorite part of the song. Still a lovely performance.
