  • Little disappointed he he left off the closing reprise of the opening verse - my favorite part of the song. Still a lovely performance.

  • This was probably when David had the triple bypass surgery.

  • that sure didnt look like letterman

  • This guy can do no wrong musically in my book. This song is one of his best and I can listen to this everyday without tire. Rufus is one in 7 billion.

  • @rodrigortigao, how I feel your pain... this song always reminded me of my relationship with my father, and now he suddenly passed away last wednesday... just when I felt I started to get to know him for real. Listening to this song hurts like hell. So why am I listening to it, three times in a row?

  • @liesbetter bless you. I'll keep you and your family in my prayers.

  • My father passed away two years ago. We didn't have the best relationship. This song still makes me cry.

  • Gosh he is handsome

  • The only man I would ever sleep with would be Rufus.

  • @momahonyb1 I think there's a lot of us Rufusexuals out there....:D

  • this is utter craziness

  • Crying.... everytime... and I a know this song for quite some years now. Amazing!

  • He's brilliant *-* I love it ♥

  • Rufus a un réel talent pour dévoiler ses émotions à travers ses magnifiques chansons. L'entendre chanter que son père lui manque est tellement touchant...

  • He really is underrated. Some people dont understand why I like him. But I do

  • The audio doesn't quite do justice to the enormity and richness of his voice, but thanks for posting. All Rufus contributions are greatly appreciated!

  • I'm sure it's been said, but I love Rufus and his music with every fiber of my being.

  • Who the hell was the guy who announced him?

  • @PaulMaccasBiggestFan That would be jimmy falon

  • I love this song so much.

  • This song is simply devastating.

  • I am reading Rufus' biography, and before i read it, i never liked this song. until i read that this was a song about his Father, and saying he wants to 'conquer' him. then i listened to the lyrics....very amazing. Rufus seems angry at the beginning (lyric-wise)

    I Absolutely LOVE Rufus Wainwright!

  • Rufus really is one of the great song writers.

  • Gorgeous!!!

  • This song is about his struggles with the relationship he has with his dad... it is possibly the most heartfelt and painful songs he has. The fact that Keane did a cover kind of irritates me but at the same time no one can compare to Rufus, he is so amazing on his own. I dont think anyone can hold a candle to his talent and beauty. He definitely has an underrated grace and artistry that very few have been lucky enough to witness. I adore this man with every fiber of my being.

  • Hearing Rufus W. sing so openly and honestly, and beautifully has made me want to change my attitude to life. For the better I hope. I learn from the artists who share themselves with the world

  • painfully gorgeous i know!!

  • i luv this!!

  • The secret is getting out. He's brilliant!

  • Rufus Wainwright quite simply makes me love music. He also has this vibe that I really get into--that New Yorker, street-inspired kind of bohemian whateverness. You know what I'm talking about, or you should, in your own way.

  • word to the post right below mine. nobody is aware :(

  • Fabi likes this

  • REACT

    Pen is position opinion (RANK)

  • GENIUS.

  • I love this song.

  • talent man from a talented family loved the McGarrigles and from a woman's point of view - what a waste!

  • uh, coked out much fallon?

  • That song is perfect, his voice is staggering, he is phenomenal.

  • One of the most beautiful songs by the man with the most beautiful voice in the world.

  • This is a great song... I first heard Keane's cover of it and didn't realize it was Rufus's. I still like their cover more, but the songwriting is amazing. kudos to him. :)

  • nobody on gods green earth could sound like rufus...such a distinctive voice..this song is heaven sent....love it!!

  • This is such a beautiful song....anyone know other father issue songs?

  • Bloody Motherfucking Asshole by his sister Martha Wainwright.

  • "Two Gold Rings" also by Rufus.

  • @livehighjive Try Father and Son by Loudon Wainwright III. .

  • this song is about his father....

his father left the family when he was young...

there was always tension between them.....

it's about bring his father down.....for all the pain he suffered......

  • @mrami9994 Try listening to Loudon Wainwright III's (Rufus' father) albums. There is a documentary called One Man Guy on YouTube as well which shows them together when Rufus was a teenager.

  • Strange guy.

But his music and above all his voice calls to me.

  • my heart, it melts.

  • Oh, if only!

  • Hehe Jimmy was happy to get the kiss from Rufus =) They are both so cute.

  • his voice is something special is unique

  • He's always been something special.

  • i love rufus but i do not think this is his best performance. also i am not a fan of jimmy fallon who i think is a hack.

  • this song give me some tears EACH time i listen to it.

  • He just said this was about his father on Elvis Costello "Spectecle" TV show...I don't get it.....???????

  • It is. It's about a huge arguement they had when Rufus was on some photo shoot. He made some comment about how Loudon was only known because of Rufus. They had a huge fight and Rufus wrote this about it.

  • This song is so great. Just love it, can't even express why. Has sort of that sadness that makes you happy though because it is so beautiful.

  • Covers are never ever ever ever as good as the original. this song is one of Rufus's most personal songs, and a cover wouldnt do it justice. I do love Keane though, they are really talented, but a cover of this song is nothing compared to the original.

  • he is so talented and handsome . wow.

  • everyone is entitled to his / her own opinion. But it isn't mine.

  • I love this song...it's so powerful that it sometimes makes me too sad to even listen to it. Rufus Wainwright is completely underrated, but the fans who do follow him are very loyal. It's like we have this special secret that the world has yet to discover.

  • @Anna19755 You hit the nail on the head...very emotional song....I always well up, it's just so painful and longing...hits you to the core.

  • @Anna19755 I totally agree. He makes me smile :) his magnificent sparkle lol.

  • Jesus, 19755, get over yourself. Is the Rufus's fan base as precious as the singer-songwriter himself? The guy's on a national TV show (one of many I might add). How underrated can he be? Want to see a fellow Canadian songwriter who is truly underrated and whose talents eclipses that of the overwrought Mr. Wainwright? Check out Ron Sexsmith.

  • @Anna19755

"It's like we have this special secret that the world has yet to discover."

That is exactly how I feel!

  • @semihalf07 The song is for his Dad.In response to the songs,he wrote about him as a kid.His Dad and Mother were on the folk scene in America and Canada.

  • @Anna19755 Is it bad that I kind of hope Rufus doesn't become to popular, or else we might lose that secret?

  • This song is so powerful.

  • That was my first time hearing this song. My god, it's beautiful. I can see why people have been raving about it.

  • Great!

  • This is so beautiful

It makes me want to cry :(

  • actually, i kind of take that back=)they share first place=)

  • i love rufus but i feel that keane's version is a tini tiny bit better(the keane fan that i am), thx for posting this, love this song!!!=)

  • I'm a raving Keane fan (as well as a Rufus fan) and I think it's a little lame that people thumb downed you for this *rolls eyes*

  • thank you=)love keane

  • They eat & drink (toast)Magazines (some thing-who knows) Got us started up (provoked argument)I was told to go (kicked him out maybe) One who must leave (he had to walk away from it) You left me (His Dad left him)Daddy want to see tears in your eyes. (did I hurt you or vice versa) You loved me (you & mom split up but you continued to love me.) See what happens to a song when you do a post mortem on it-destroyed!

  • "You loved me (you & mom split up but you continued to love me.)"

actually, his father was never supportive of him, certainly not about his homosexuality. During his addiction, Rufus said of his father, "I needed an asshole to yell at me." All he's saying is that he always thought that his dad hurt him, but really he just hurt himself.

great song. Rufus is a genius.

  • Yes, he's gay. So what?

  • What was the argument about?

  • My favourite songs of rufus...But i'm french and i don't understand the meaning...is anyone could tell me what does it talk?

  • He had an argument with his father but remembers it as if the father was at fault, then he realizes he was to blame. His parents are divorced

  • wh...at?

    xD

  • Greatest song of all time

  • amazing, strong, beautiful, sincerly, weak

    linda maravilhosa.. fraca forte sutil....

  • theres so many different stages of rufus.. i love him in all of them though!

  • this song gets me in tears everytime.

  • this song is about an argument he had with his dad....and it's sooooo good!

  • widilpoo, you've got it! For the longest time I thought it was a love song, then that one line got to me personally, my relationship with my Dad, and it all made sense.

  • this song is sooo pretty I just want to get up and dance to it

  • Amazing as always :)

  • he is soooo amazing!!!

  • rufus is always good, but i think he sounds a little ragged in this clip

  • He is perfect in every way..oh I wish I was a man so I'd have a chance ;)

  • i'm pretty sure i've seen every single rufus clip on youtube/dvd's...and this clip is my all time favorite, i'm glad that its back on this site

  • thanks for posting this! an earlier version got yanked from youtube and I missed it...what an amazing song and talented performer!!
