Saudi Arabia follows a specific government and laws that are directly related to their religion and lines from the Quaran... This is what happens in extremist countries, or countries that actually follow their religion to almost 100%. Luckily, most countries have lost this insanity and follow science and reason over faith in a religion people are helplessly indoctrinated in once being born.
Although I agree what happened to her is complete bull and I feel bad about her. I can't really be respectful because what happened to her IS because of her own religion. You might say not all Muslims are like that or are not that strict. But if someone, or some people, can manipulate the religion so easily to suit their ideas then the core of that religion is flawed. If the core is flawed then that religion, in any degree, is flawed. Still I feel bad for her. I hope she's ok.
It's cool that you had the chance to know her. I had the privilege of friending her on Facebook just two days before her arrest. @insightnew I met her after coming in contact with a Saudi Girl via her blog omaimanajjar dot wordpress dotcom - I highly recommend reading it, She got me very much into the cause of the Saudi Women, and I started to come in contact with women like Wajeha Al Huwaider and of course Manal Al Sharif. From there it is spreading around the world. But of course freedom loving America won't bother with their muslim friends of Saudi Arabia. It is not only Saudi politics that this is possible, it is also American politics.
Americans ALLOW it to happen ... even if it leads to planes flown into buildings!!.

@ambardarlane i dont have to respect islam or its ideas. but i do respect muslims bechose they are humans. in a same way i respect christians even thou their religion is sick.
@JRBendixen It would force him to admit that Tf00t understands the difference between extremists and moderates. I say deal with each in kind. Even though I´m extremely vocal against uncompromising muslims, I help out muslim organasations IRL whom are positive and progressive, unlike coughlan who only has his loud mouth.
Sometimes I wonder if coughlan can tell a complete bastard muslim from a moderate, as he never has to choose which to support, because it´s always done by proxy and without any work for him. I would argue he actually gains from letting others making the choice for him. And as far as I know he has not evaluated the character of a single muslim in a very long time. If he loses an argument he can always lean on defending a muslim.
@insightnew hmmmmmm. well. i know that there is sharia law in manny of the middle eastern countries. religion seemes to demand more loyalty all the time and thus it bechose more extremist. now not all extremists and bad, and not all moderates are good. not all the terrorism is done bechose of religius reasons and some of it is done political reasons. there are christian al quada mebers.
@montrealwatcher Most Christians only have Christian friends. It has a lot to do with the predominant (or in some cases state-sanctioned) religion where you grow up and gain your cultural identity. I know Christians whose parents are the same way. Most people don't want to settle down with someone they don't believe is "saved".
I think its important to remember that Islam is a young religion compared to Christianity. There are Muslims who are bringing Islam to the 21st century.
Muslims must be allowed to do this themselves. Any outside effort will be seen as a hostile intrusion and contempt on a belief Muslim genuinely hold dear.
I think that the Arab spring has shown that the Muslim youth do want to be progressive. I stand in solidarity with them, not because I am one, but because they, just like us are also people
As a muslim, i just want to say that the ban on women driving in Saudi Arabia has nothing to do with Islam. There are no scriptural proof to back that claim up. It has more to do with culture and tradition, its the male dominated society not letting the women the right they deserve.
People need to realize that whatever happens in Saudi does not represent Islam or Islamic practices, heck even the current rule is unislamic, there is no Kingship in Islam, but you never hear about that, do you ?
Religion and culture are co-dependent especially for Islam. Muhammad made it up from Zoroastrian, Jewish, Christian and other beliefs of the times (which was before cars so there is no direct law against it). Islam clearly subjugates women under men and to say that women are not allowed to drive has nothing to do with Islam is naive nonsense.
It'll be a glorious day when we get off oil, thus putting the entire backwards ass Middle East squarely into the category of "shit nobody cares about."
How messed up is Saudi Arabia when being doing something as innocuous as posting a picture of yourself driving a car is a direct threat to your life and freedom? It's astounding (and repulsive) that the government of Saudi Arabia regards this as a crime in any sense.
Bravo to Manal Alsharif. I hope that Saudi Arabia will step out of the Dark Ages and stop persecuting people for simply living their lives.
@montrealwatcher Um, if she was "dating" a non-muslim, then she wasn't very religious (if at all) to begin with, so she is hardly a yardstick by which to measure Muslims.
Asking not to protest Islam and focus on supporting her bravery is absurd. It is as if you where asking for support them loosening the leash [the leashed one being a woman]. But some action is better than inaction.
@alexsouls1 I know how you feel about Isalm and probably religion in general. I feel the same way. But she and the friends who created that page are muslims and all I ask is that people be polite in your support for her. Especialy on the facebook page her friends made for her. Sometimes we need to take baby steps. She is focused on driving. Let her start there :-)
@insightnew ah, so your basically like a little devil who wants to take 'baby steps' for your ultimate step of turning these people into atheists, so you want to 'pretend' to be all nice and smiley while deep down you spit on her and her religious values and you want to reach a final goal of making her leave her religion, pathetic, that's what you are.
@insightnew Religion in general sucks, Islam especially is repressive to women especially in its Saudi Wahabi form. I agree that we should respect her and not be nasty about Islam on her page, even though it is the root of the problem. But we do need more than baby steps. This mentality of slow baby steps has gotten Saudi women nowhere, we need more brave and daring people like Manal! Spread the word!
You are not attacking (traditional Muhammadan) Islam directly, however, you are still attacking it indirectly by challenging certain specific Salafi/Wahhabi/puritanical notions that are taken and practiced very seriously in countries just like Saudia.
I would say the same for any religion. Unfortunately such belief systems do not die easily, though the number of religions that are now nothing but dust gives me a bit of hope that it will happen. On the other hand, for every religion that dies through lack of believers a new one pops up like Baha'i or Scientology. People look for patterns in things and we aren't the only animals to see patterns that aren't there. We just devleoped some methods to help us stop shoddy thinking.
This video smell like islamophobia .... just using a muslim girl that fight for her freedom . no more no less ... now what about christian young woman that have even less right back here in the U.S ?
@sattanhellsing First of all, learn proper english, as yours is horrible. Second name one incident where a christian woman is put on trial in the United States for marital infidelity when she is the victim of rape. This actually happened is your ass backwards, kangaroo islamic courts. The verdict? The woman was sentenced to over 70 lashes. Freedom indeed. You know nothing about the United States, so shut the fuck up. Go study the only book you ever will read, and absorb its barbarism.
@sattanhellsing Oh and the country were the aforementioned incident happend? Saudi Arabia. You know the holy land of islam. The country containing the two so-called holy cities, where the so-called prophet pedophile raped a 9 year old girl, and committed genocide against innocent people for the crime of not believing his delusion. Yeah that place. The country that would look like Afghanistan were it not for the oil revenue. I mean you certainly don't do science, thats against your religion.
In the United States both religion and law are two separate things. A woman in the United States is free to dress as they see fit, travel where they see fit and interract with those they see fit. They are even allowed to worship whatever they wish, if they choose to worship at all. More importantly they are allowed to speak their minds and hold positions of authority and responsibility.
None of the above is true for a woman in Saudi Arabia.
@sattanhellsing: "now what about christian young woman that have even less right back here in the U.S ?"
Really? Do you have a head injury, or are you just stupid?
Show me where christian women aren't allowed to drive in the US. Show me where christian women aren't allowed to have their hair uncovered in the US. You're full of crap and you know it.
Bloody hell. Good for her for making that brave a stand. Shows that North Korea really has the right idea if you want to control people - don't ever let them leave.
Am I correct in thinking that women driving is not illegal under Saudi Arabian law but it is the subject of a fatwah making it haraam for Sunni Muslim women to drive? Meaning that she hasn't broken the law but is breaking tradition?
@kvj1989 Yes but the laws we live buy are generally agreed upon by all to be mutually beneficial.
also - I love how he feels like he has to say "this isn't an attack on islam" at the end - everyone is so touchy about it, because they silently admit that violence among fundamentals of islam is a problem, even if they publicly tow the multiculturalism line.
@kvj1989 May I recommend the author David Gerrold. His book series often has unique views on freedom. I suggest reading it before making more rhetorical statements.
@kvj1989 My, my, you do a lot of projection don't you? What's up with the random misspellings? Have fun with your vague definitions of 'freedom' that you never bothered to clarify.
Sure it does when they aren't allowed to go anywhere without a male. Why would they need to drive when a more capable man will be around?
Letting women drive would enable them to travel freely. Something which most traditional Muslim societies tend to disapprove of. Especially as it would enable them to escape abusive relationships more easily. This way a woman is nearly crippled as soon as she steps outside.
But I think women can drive in most Muslim countries...except S.A.
@GodlessManitoban They claim that it is because they might meet up with men who are not their husbands (=owners in that country). However, they are often alone with their hired drivers from other countries quite often, so I don't know why they trust that. Maybe because the husband/owners assured themselves that that one man is safe with his wife/property, but still don't trust HER not to stray. I wish our radfem friends would help fix things over there instead of wasting away on petty stuff here
@GodlessManitoban Money is less important to them than keeping their property-wives from choosing for themselves who they do or don't have sex with, and thus dishonouring their owners. Also, they might get in the cars and drive to parts unknown, leaving their cruel husbands and the husband's families (also often cruel to daughter-in-laws), which of course is not allowed, since she is not legally allowed to move out on her own desire. No basic human freedoms for her. :(
How? The crash rate would increase, and then you'd give those cheating bitches the freedom to go fuck some guy they met off the interents. Imagine if rush hour traffic had no women drivers. Ironically, it'd be called douche-hour traffic, but at least the traffic would be moving.

I stand in solidarity with them, not because I am one, but because they, just like us are also people
AziMeX 9 months ago 7
As a muslim, i just want to say that the ban on women driving in Saudi Arabia has nothing to do with Islam. There are no scriptural proof to back that claim up. It has more to do with culture and tradition, its the male dominated society not letting the women the right they deserve.
People need to realize that whatever happens in Saudi does not represent Islam or Islamic practices, heck even the current rule is unislamic, there is no Kingship in Islam, but you never hear about that, do you ?
lessirey 9 months ago 7
Religion and culture are co-dependent especially for Islam. Muhammad made it up from Zoroastrian, Jewish, Christian and other beliefs of the times (which was before cars so there is no direct law against it). Islam clearly subjugates women under men and to say that women are not allowed to drive has nothing to do with Islam is naive nonsense.

Coolrockndad 9 months ago
How messed up is Saudi Arabia when being doing something as innocuous as posting a picture of yourself driving a car is a direct threat to your life and freedom? It's astounding (and repulsive) that the government of Saudi Arabia regards this as a crime in any sense.
Bravo to Manal Alsharif. I hope that Saudi Arabia will step out of the Dark Ages and stop persecuting people for simply living their lives.

Asking not to protest Islam and focus on supporting her bravery is absurd. It is as if you where asking for support them loosening the leash [the leashed one being a woman]. But some action is better than inaction.
alexsouls1 9 months ago 10
@alexsouls1 I know how you feel about Isalm and probably religion in general. I feel the same way. But she and the friends who created that page are muslims and all I ask is that people be polite in your support for her. Especialy on the facebook page her friends made for her. Sometimes we need to take baby steps. She is focused on driving. Let her start there :-)
insightnew 9 months ago 10
@insightnew ah, so your basically like a little devil who wants to take 'baby steps' for your ultimate step of turning these people into atheists, so you want to 'pretend' to be all nice and smiley while deep down you spit on her and her religious values and you want to reach a final goal of making her leave her religion, pathetic, that's what you are.
SamiZaatari 9 months ago
@insightnew Religion in general sucks, Islam especially is repressive to women especially in its Saudi Wahabi form. I agree that we should respect her and not be nasty about Islam on her page, even though it is the root of the problem. But we do need more than baby steps. This mentality of slow baby steps has gotten Saudi women nowhere, we need more brave and daring people like Manal! Spread the word!
lonishar 9 months ago
@alexsouls1 You cannot support freedom without protesting against islam
LegendaryAsshole 9 months ago
You are not attacking (traditional Muhammadan) Islam directly, however, you are still attacking it indirectly by challenging certain specific Salafi/Wahhabi/puritanical notions that are taken and practiced very seriously in countries just like Saudia.
Wrath0fKhan 9 months ago
@montrealwatcher

@sattanhellsing And you smell like crap! Islamophobia is a made up word!
GodlessFreedomNow 9 months ago 4
@sattanhellsing First of all, learn proper english, as yours is horrible. Second name one incident where a christian woman is put on trial in the United States for marital infidelity when she is the victim of rape. This actually happened is your ass backwards, kangaroo islamic courts. The verdict? The woman was sentenced to over 70 lashes. Freedom indeed. You know nothing about the United States, so shut the fuck up. Go study the only book you ever will read, and absorb its barbarism.
Newenlightenmentnow 9 months ago
@sattanhellsing Oh and the country were the aforementioned incident happend? Saudi Arabia. You know the holy land of islam. The country containing the two so-called holy cities, where the so-called prophet pedophile raped a 9 year old girl, and committed genocide against innocent people for the crime of not believing his delusion. Yeah that place. The country that would look like Afghanistan were it not for the oil revenue. I mean you certainly don't do science, thats against your religion.
Newenlightenmentnow 9 months ago
@sattanhellsing
RaPositivist 9 months ago
@sattanhellsing: "now what about christian young woman that have even less right back here in the U.S ?"
Really? Do you have a head injury, or are you just stupid?

Bloody hell. Good for her for making that brave a stand. Shows that North Korea really has the right idea if you want to control people - don't ever let them leave.
Am I correct in thinking that women driving is not illegal under Saudi Arabian law but it is the subject of a fatwah making it haraam for Sunni Muslim women to drive? Meaning that she hasn't broken the law but is breaking tradition?

No one has real freedom.
We are all bound by laws.
kvj1989 9 months ago
@kvj1989 Yes but the laws we live buy are generally agreed upon by all to be mutually beneficial.
also - I love how he feels like he has to say "this isn't an attack on islam" at the end - everyone is so touchy about it, because they silently admit that violence among fundamentals of islam is a problem, even if they publicly tow the multiculturalism line.
chaoslord4441 9 months ago
@chaoslord4441 But it's not real freedom.
It's only freedom to a degree.
I have no problem with that though, i was simply making an observation.

Why are women not allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia? That makes no sense.
GodlessManitoban 9 months ago
@GodlessManitoban
Teloculos 9 months ago
@GodlessManitobann I can answer that with just one word. misogyny.
hagenttzd 9 months ago
@GodlessManitoban They claim that it is because they might meet up with men who are not their husbands (=owners in that country). However, they are often alone with their hired drivers from other countries quite often, so I don't know why they trust that. Maybe because the husband/owners assured themselves that that one man is safe with his wife/property, but still don't trust HER not to stray. I wish our radfem friends would help fix things over there instead of wasting away on petty stuff here
ScentedNectar 9 months ago
@ScentedNectar
I think it would be much more cost effective and time saving to let the woman drive.
GodlessManitoban 9 months ago
@GodlessManitoban Money is less important to them than keeping their property-wives from choosing for themselves who they do or don't have sex with, and thus dishonouring their owners. Also, they might get in the cars and drive to parts unknown, leaving their cruel husbands and the husband's families (also often cruel to daughter-in-laws), which of course is not allowed, since she is not legally allowed to move out on her own desire. No basic human freedoms for her. :(
