For those of you who are asking Andrew to explain more about visualisation: guys, come on, go and order his book, don't be so ungrateful! Andrew is doing a great job with his youtube videos. We should also support Andrew and appreciate his work and show our gratitude for all the youtube staff that he's done by purchasing his material - especially because it seems he's offering some great stuff. So we learn better and more. If we're really serious about learning it makes sense. It's a win-win.
I bought your book and I read it completely already, and even though I love your videos... they're well explained, clarifying and useful, I was disappointed with your book. I thought it was more guitar-orientated and not self-aid book. :(
I TOTALLY DISAGREE with you. His book is most excellent, however you have to put effort into applying the ideas that he presents. You can't expect to just buy a book, and have the purchasing of it solve all your problems. He clearly says in all of the advertising that his book is NOT a "guitar book" as well. So, I'm surprised that you'd post here that you "thought" his book was a guitar book. You simply didn't do your due diligence and you cannot "Blame" anyone but yourself on that!
Glad i came across this ! When i started learning there were no teachers in my area so i used to play along with simple stuff like The Sex Pistols, Status Quo etc ! Then someone left a copy of the Rush "Anthology"! Just notation and chord boxes(No Tab)! So i Thought Learning the whole of "2112" would be a challenge! So I basically spent all day in my bedroom labouring through that! It took me ages but i eventually could play along with the "Live" version within` a year of starting to play !Peace
Well Hello Andrew this could well have been the "kickstart" I needed restart my guitar practice routine. I needed some sort of guidance to bring together the information and desire I have to play this instrument.
Andrew does the book actually have scales shapes etc? I need a hand holding type of instruction i need struture i know a few chords and a few penatonics but i need STRUTURE as in do A-B-C in order to learn im 56 retired and have lots of time any ideas Andrew? Thanx Al
No, the eBook is not a scales and chords manual. It is about how to use your; time, your senses, your mind, and your physiology to learn faster & easier. It is a "learning how to learn" concept that applies many modern learning methods with ancient methodologies. Much of it is based upon the Howard Roberts method of Accelerated Learning (or Speed Learning) used at MI. There are also several other concepts covered in the book as well. But, it is not a guitar lesson book.
@nesa407 guitar scalew method is what you need. an interactive program where you memorise 5 shapes and that is pretty much the basis of everything, Working on intervals instead of notes. look it up :)
Hey Andrew! I just want to take the time to say THANK YOU for the wonderful lessons and vids you have posted. I have been teaching myself to play guitar for about 4 years now, all I used to do was look at tabs and figure out songs I like to play, but I realized fairly recently that just learning to how play a song is not what I really want to do, I want to understand how music works so that I can become a better guitar player. Your vids have inspired and helped so much, I am truly greatful TY
Thanks for this! I've written various articles for Guitar Player and other mags and I really appreciate when someone makes this information available for free-especially the effective practice chart. Visualization is so often overlooked, not only by students but people in all stages of life. Creative visualization can make a huge difference in leading a happy, fulfilled life. Thanks again, Josh Workman
I feel like i just came upon a gold mine. your channel is full of useful information for someone like myself, still a bit clueless on how to start out in the music biz. thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with the world, i'm very grateful
i fully agree with how important visualization is.
Things just seem to make more sense when i'm away from the guitar sometimes, and I always try to visualize shapes or the notes on the fretboard whenever I get time to think (usually when im trying to sleep)
I used to do this a lot. not so much now that i'm fluent and comfortable with the notes/scales, the major's at least.
Dear andrew, I study classical guitar, and simply just dont feel like i have enough time in between studying technique and repetoir. Also once i go past 4 hours my left arm starts to hurt. This kind of information is really important to me at this moment.
Andrew thank you very much for your videos, you have a very informative and friendly way of teaching and describing...i cant wait to get dug into all the material you have on your channel :)
Great job extremely helpful, its funny i work away from home allot for weeks at a time and cant always bring my guitar, which drives me crazy however i do visulaize my self playing. I Always felt it was helpful in some way and its great to hear you confirm it. Keep up the great work...
Andrew, thank you so much for sharing your passion and knowledge with the youtube community. It is so nice to have access to knowledgeable instruction from someone like youself who is educated to the extent that you are. I come back time and time again to see whats new. @naturalsmind ... You are very correct... In fact, Howard Roberts had a book out in the 80's called, "The Accelerator: The Theory-Fingerboard Connection" (by Howard Roberts, Charles Fechter, and Keith Wyatt).
Charles ended up teaching the accelerator classes at G.I.T. (and later recorded a multi-part video series available in the library at M.I.). It discussed quite a good deal of information in regard to many Asian learning methodologies. When applied, they certainly do make a difference.
@naturalsmind dude you are so right there i have also done research into numerous topics some that you would not think would be link and alot of learning stuff and it does all lead to meditation relaxation and buddhism and somtimes self hypnotism which is basicly interacting with your unconsious mind
Thank you for very much for your video tutorial. I have emphasised the knowledge side of things far too much and crippled my iintuitive side. Recently I bought a recording device with a looping feature and in a very short time my playing has improved so dramatically I can hardly believe i'm playing the music when I playback. Your advice is very very important for those who want a balanced approach to learning.
I've know for a long time that I doesn't use my potentoal to max, I've always felt it on me and have watched many videos like this, but the difference betwen them and this is that this video seems to help:)
does anyone have that problem that they have a hard time starting a riff or something. like my hands freeze and dosent move. like stuttering almost. to get a move on i usually strum 1, 2 ,3 on muted strings, so it "breaks" the "wall". kinda hard to explain.
@wannabeserpento99 yeah when i started playing i had the same problem. just try to concentrate on continuing and not repeating from the first note or something and it will go away
Biggest thing that helped me I would add...you don't have to use a metronome. Almost everyone has a cheap keyboard with its cheezy drumbeats. BUT...those drumbeats are as good or better than a metronome for practice. Listening for a bass drum, or accents, is very valuable, and it is less likely to drive yourself or those in your household as crazy as the click click click of a metronome.
Hi Andrew, bought your accelerated learning e-book, cant see any more detail on what you mean when you say using visualizing away from the guitar. Do you simply mean working picturing the fretboard in your mind and thinking about how the instrument works?
@ronemahone He does go over visualization starting on p. 24. The main idea is that the mind can't tell the difference between what's real and what is vividly imagined. Play a C major scale on your guitar, then put it down and completely recreate that experience in your head with your eyes closed. You have to see it, hear it and feel it in your head. Like he said it's literally practicing away from your instrument. If you visualize a tree falling and your brain hears it, it does make a sound.
given the amount of knowledge and the number of scales it's interesting to note just how much some artist do with a very small # of notes and positions on the neck (course I refer mostly to blues/rock) even so I believe the two sides should be combined as early as possible
Wow..All i got to say is thank you very much this is a really helpful video. Most of your videos i dont understand but this one is in a catagory all in its own.Thank you for the practice tips and PLz try to make you videos more understanding... I appraite what your doing..Thank you

My favorite part of this video is the 5 step practice plan:
1. Before playing, figure out the piece.
2. Go slow -- ingrain the music | meditative practice
3. Use a metronome
4. Record yourself -- daily! Listen back and analyze your playing.
5. Use visualization! This one is huge.
