He says cheap glass and metal. But he didn't say that his system requires a dish that tracks the sunlight, so there are motors, gears and mechanical parts that could add considerably to the cost. I'm thinking that the difference in costs is not that great. But it does eliminate most of the environmental costs of the process of manufacturing the solar cells. This shows that one has to look at ALL of the factors of a solar PV system.

Doesn't the solar cell just melt with all that light and heat focused on it? Surely you can't take just any 4" solar panel and use hundreds of times more light on it.

They already have inflatable solar bubbles that do this. The front of the bubble is clear and the back is reflective film and it concentrates the light onto a small panel.

put a lens in the assembly above the dish and we just made it 10,000 times more effiecient and more light is concentrated, simple logic

Something is fishy here.. If the energy is 1000 times the energy(heat-energy theorem) then the temperature of the single solar cell at the focus would also be close to 1000 times greater than that of a same-sized solar cell facing the sun. The "collector" cell, in the focus, would melt.

@desertlight If that was the case, then Achilles death ray would have been a success. Not all the heat is transferred to the solar cell, nor is the scaling for heat linear. In this case, we are not looking for heat, only light.

I doubt it 1000 times more productive than a single cell, but at the same time, the heat is not linear from the reflection of light. If 1 light is 1 degree above ambient temps, and 10 lights are 3 degrees more, and 100 lights are 30 degrees more..Outta characters now. !

Still a good idea, since also generates hot water. But they, in their website, said 75% efficiency, but this is consideringt eh water heater effect too, and not just the solar conversion to electricity alone.

You are gonna have to cool the solar cell. That would be a nice dual sourcing scheme........ Use the heat/ steam in a turbine as part of the cooling loop. There are al sort of alternative methods for people to generate their own power. The delay is caused by the currently vested interests. It will stay a cottage industry until things rearrange themselves in some "global Impacting" situation.

philly p84. its a complicated , If they are shaded the plants may need very little water. there are aerophagias plants that grow hanging from walls in Andalucia.. If you wan tto dry air cool it and the humidity in it will condense out, deserts get very cold at night. Winds circulate, some must bring humidity that gets condensed out of the air in deserts, water for plants capable of using dew I am not sure all my cactuses have much root , they get humidity from the air. rose macaskie.

Dubai uses sea water and massive amounts of energy to take the salt out of it, this may be possible to achieve using solar energy to purify the water and the shade to grow vegetation, its a big project

There is no "invention" here. This is common technology. The problem with concentrating the solar engery is over heating the PVC (Photo Voltaic Cell.)

@gabigowriel Because the bigger problem of the renewable sources of energy such as eolic, solar.... etc is that are not stable and reliable at all. They depend on many factors. For example the solar devices can produce energy only for several hours of the day or produce the half or less of energy when there are clounds.
