I always looked at the Metallica vs Slayer arguement like this:

There were two paths both bands could go down after a certain point. Slayer stuck with their roots, refined their sound and continued to put out SOLID tunes. they experimented, but never strayed far from what got them where they are.

Metallica choose a different path, and went with an entirely different sound. You either loved it or hated it. I personally despised it, but that's just me

Look at their first album: kill 'em all, thats definately considered death metal. its just not satanic like slayer. just read some of their lyrics they got songs about war, fighting, and suicide, all aspects of death. as far as the melodic part goes just listen to their breakdowns like in master of puppets how isn't that melodic. theres no such thing as "plain heavy metal" either all metal can be subcategorized. plain rock maybe.
