When my late Dad saw this scene he was like "Holy shit this guy is insane". After the movie we discussed the Plainview character. This is a movie that FORCES you to discuss it afterwards AND watch it more than once. DDL's character is one of the most complex in film, right up there with Don Corleone in The Godfather.
this guys got problems, alright. im trying to think - realistically, what must happen to someone to make them a daniel plainview. did daniel day lewis ever say what he visualized or kept in his mind to make him start to feel utter hatred for every person he comes across?
This is what Under Armor shoulda told Nike Or google shoulda told yahoo when they offered to buy them out.
"You just tell me how to run my family/business? One night im gonna come to your house go inside your home and cut your throat, you dont tell me about my son/business YOU'LL SEE WHAT I CAN DO!
This is one of the best scenes of the film from a DDL perspective, but the guy who plays Tilford is one of the THE worst actors I've seen, he is completely unbelievable...
@Sutterjack The academy usually see's it like this
Handicapped/mentally deficient portrayls=oscar
jodie foster, dustin hoffman, daniel day lewis, tom hanks, al pacino, all actors off the top off the top of my head who won oscars for playing handicapped/slow people
@masterbassist93 That's probably because effectively, convincingly and sincerely acting out the role of a mentally challenged individual takes serious skill and effort in trying to internalize all the subtle nuances and idiosyncrasies of such a character in a way that doesn't come off as contrived or embarrassing.
I think why this scene works is because it's a turning point for the plainview character. all throught the movie, we were given just little snatches of plainview's psychotic nature (smacking Eli, the confession to his false brother) and it was just enough to keep our appitete wet. and in this scene, Lewis finally shows us the monster hidden inside, and we're like HOLY F***ING S**T!
Daniel Plainview is going to go to the house of the person who disliked this video and cut his throat while he's sleeping. Yes I'm talking about you Sta6kA
@sharks27 I'm at a loss for words to describe how stupid this statement you just made is. You should be ashamed, everyone is dumber for what you just said.
No one has dared to vote this video down because they know that if they do, Daniel Plainview will come to them inside of their house wherever their sleeping and cut their throat.
I have another scene with Eli Sunday in it. Paul Dano is integral as an actor to this film. The clip is titled "God doesn't save stupid people." /watch?v=8saKPCZyOxM
I think that Daniel Day Lewis Is just as great in There will be blood As in Gangs of New York... Adrian Brody Was great and all but c'mon.. Bill The fucking butcher deserves the fucking academy award XD no question really ^^
@justsomeguyy Because it's a lead up. Plainview wants the money so badly that he ignores the comment, but once Mills starts to pry him for less money that's when he gets defensive of his son merely because he doesn't want his life being operated by anyone else. Hope this helps!
This scene scared me. It scared me because of how I could put myself in both Daniel's and the man who's being threatened's view. This is probably the best scene I've ever scene that makes me feel like that.
one of the greatest on screen performances i have ever seen. everytime you watch this film you see something new in lewis' character. daniel day lewis is an absolute powerhouse in this film.
It's been a while since I've seen this so I almost forgot how great Day Lewis REALLY was. He's the hardest working actor I know. There's always something going on in his mind when he acts, there's no half assed way of doing it. And this is him at the absolute top of his game
@coolbrett well believe it or not that is less than true. the thing about good acting, especially with lewis, is that all the hard work is done before filming, the process of putting ones self in the characters shoes fully. from there, it's just a matter of saying lines as your new, temporary, and artificial self.
Woh woh, hey, I wouldn't say it keeps you on his side at all. If anything it completely unnerves your audience with Daniel's apparent mental instability.
I love Daniel's character. Did you catch the man say, to Daniel, that his son was a "discovery"? Daniel snaps!!! The whole "cutting your throat" line works because Plainview is somebody who resorts to violence as a means of escape. That was his immediate instinct because he had no answer, no defense. He tried to turn his anger into passion for his son, but even he saw it fail there. Absolutely amazing scene...
@ckad79 i think he was referring to the oil when the man mentioned the "discovery" although the character was probably set off by that word anyway, because in his own mind he took it to mean his boy. i could be wrong but i dont think there is any way that he could know the truth. either way thats very, very good writing because you could take it to mean either the boy or the oil.
@cruffrider5 I agree. The more I watch him and the film, the deeper it becomes. Plainview is not a beast, he is a hurt, desperate and tormented man. The film gives a very few clues, but it's there.
@wasteland70 Yeah, I agree. Glad to hear someone shares my perspective. This is definitely a deep film/story, more of a character study than anything else, and deserves multiple viewings. I was shocked to see how quickly and easily Daniel attaches to a man he believes is his brother. In many ways, he's the most vulnerable, isolated and desperate character in the film. I loved this film, BTW. Restored my faith in American filmmakers
@cruffrider5 isnt he fucking amazing? i usually roll my eyes when actors talk about their "craft" but he really transforms himself which takes as much courage as it does skill and it's incredible how unrecognizable he is. you can see the self hatred and hatred of those around him in his every step as daniel plainview.
@cruffrider5 While I agree with you overall, I think Cate Blanchett as Jude Quinn (Bob Dylan) would've been a fierce contender. And there's also Javier Bardem's Anton Chigurh. But alas, had Cate won she'd only receive best supporting actress instead of best actress and Javier only won best supporting actor. Don't get me wrong great respectful awards, but not as good as best actor and actress. But with that said, Daniel-Day Lewis had all of his opponents thoroughly beat.
At this point, no.
