if there was a poll taken right now between who is the greatest gospel singer of all time and it came down to rh harris and kirk franklin, mr harris would most definitly win by a tremendous landslide!
You mean Same Cook has him down to a tee, this man R.H. Harris is the front runner of this style of gospel singing, Sam Cook copy cat Harris, google down in the Flood it will tell you all about this great singer
I wasn't saying that Harris had Cooke down to a T, but that Harris had found a singer who had Cooke's style down to a T. I have about every recording that the Soul Stirrers have made. I have ALL of Harris' and Cooke's recordings with them. In fact, my Dad and Sam Cooke were old Gospel buddies. The Stirrers helped train him and my Uncles. And I've always said that I like Harris' leading over Cooke's. So I agree that Cooke copied Harris. "Movin' In The Room" proves that from the "Shine On Me" cd.
As much as I love Archie Brownlee (he's my favorite singer), I have to say it's the other way around....Brownlee was a protege of Harris. who started singing in the 30's. I LOVE this song.
If I'm not mistaken, this is a song he recorded with the Masonic Quartet, the group he had in the 80's. This is a remake of the song he recorded with the Gospel Paraders in the 60's. It's amazing because he is 70+ at the time of this recording. If you get a chance, listen to him lead "Beams Of Heaven". He's still able to hit those high notes. He also has a young man leading "Since I Met Jesus" and "Draw Me Nearer" and he has Sam Cooke down to a T.
Let me clarify myself. I didn't mean that the man sounded exactly like Cooke (no one can do that) I'm just saying that Harris was able to find a man that could sing in the Sam Cooke style. His phrasing is like Cooke's. Listen to the group. You'll see what I mean. And by the way, it's the Masonic Quintet, not Quartet. That was my mistake. The title of the cd is Since I Met Jesus.
