@freesnake11 *SPOILERS, OBVIOUSLY* After bragging about how he's immortal, Bender discovers he has a fatal defect. This means when he's dead, he's dead. So he goes on a wacky adventure with Hermes to track down the inspector that approved him so he could kick his ass, Bender and Hermes becoming friends on the way. At the very end, it's revealed that Hermes was Inspector 5 the whole time. Beautiful episode, catch it sometime.
Nothing beats the final moments of the 'Jurassic Bark' episode with Connie Francis's song 'If It Takes Forever', it's played over the 'unknown back story explanation' to Fry's dog becoming fossilized, utterly heart-wrenching, guaranteed.
Futurama is one of my favorite shows-- it proudly shows it's opinion on touchy subjects (transsexuality, homosexuality, etc) but still keeps a lighthearted feel to it. Not to mention, the episodes "Sting", "Jurassic Bark" and "Fatal Inspection" are the only cartoon shows that have ever made me bawl like a little b-tch.
Am I one of the only people who noticed the continuity error here? In this episode it's established that Bender was built as a baby but in the earlier episode "Bendless Love" Bender tells everyone that he was built as an adult i.e. the size he always has been.
what pisses me off about most animated comedies is that the only thing they care about is the comedy, what I've always loved about futurama is that its not like south park, family guy and the simpsons. futurama actually has a lot of heart and they care more about it being touching than funny and this show has made me cry more than once, futurama is (in my opinion) the greatest animated show in television history
@classicnickluvr South Park isn't about being funny. It's satire, which makes it about pointing out the flaws in our own society in order to promote change.
@classicnickluvr The Simpsons's focus on character relationships and sometimes emotional plot lines, mostly centered around family, is a great influence on the touching episodes of Futurama. How can you say The Simpsons is strictly comedy with no underlying tones? That's simply not true. I agree 100% that Family Guy is that way...and South Park...well, SP is supposed to be satire that serves as a social commentary. It's not really the goal of that show to be sad or emotional.
Theres afew of the new episodes which are outstanding in the story telling department, like this on. Im really happy with the new series, even the not so good episodes are forgivable because of all the better quality ones, best animated show on Tv.
There isn't that many programs that can make you laugh and cry at the same time but this is one. How this got cancelled and The Simpsons carried on in it's current form I'll never know....
This is one of the beautiful scenes in Futurama. The ending of this episode made me cry because of it.The other episodes that made me cry were "Luck of the Fryish" and "Jurassic Bark".
@EdwardElric555 Basically Hermes approved Bender but Bender was built without a backup unit so if he got a bad virus perhaps he would end up dead and throughout the episode Benders mad at whoever #5 was for letting him be built without a backup unit and all along Hermes was #5 (he was demoted after) and he went soft hearted when Bender was built and let him get built without it. So Hermes has been covering up his mistake by trying to make sure that Bender doesn't see that Hermes is #5.
@CherubAgent1997 That's... not that sad. It's just stupid really. I would in into details why but that would just be rude to crap all over everyone's moment.
@EdwardElric555 People cry over it because of what I just say about it basically. It shows that Hermes and Bender have a long relationship and that Hermes has a soft side.
What about when Leela discovers the truth about her parents, and then there's a montage of clips throughout her life, showing her parents were secretly there in the background? That made me tear up :(
@TheJenny0330 yeah people on youtube generally try to mirror the video so that they can avoid copyright laws and not get their video taken down and account closed down
As much as it makes me bitter to admit, because I still watch the reruns of the older seasons, Futurama seems to have downgraded in quality in humor and has lost its charm this latest season. However, this scene gives me some hope that there's still something there - that Futurama still has a heart.
i just love the fact that a character in futurama is connected to the other with some sort of great story...like hermes and bender here and the professor and zoidberg in another episode... :)
What gets me to cry is the last few bars of the song, and Benders cute little burp. I recently re-saw "Luck of the Fryish" ad "Jurassic Bark". Made me cry also, best seasons ever.
@SpiritWolfram It's from the episode, Leela's Homeworld. It's at the end. But it's best to watch the episode from the beginning in order to really understand the feeling that Leela has.
@SpiritWolfram There also the moment in which all life on Earth is extinguished and Fry couldn't tell Leela on time he would be late. He thinks he'll never see Leela Again at that moment... (The Late Philip J. Fry, S06E07)
@SpiritWolfram Yes, same here, I also cried during the episode with the giant bees where leela thought that fry was dead, and then when he woke her up from her coma I was crying so much. <3 Love this show. : )
I love Futurama's random moments of sincerity and sweetness. Leela's parents watching over her. Fry's dog spending his entire life waiting for him to come back. Fry's brother naming his son after him......great moments.
@Theonegamefreak He burned the folder with his ID so that bender would never know he was the one who saved his life. Hermes doesn't want gratitude or anything in return, he did it because that's who he is.
In case your wondering why people flip or "mirror" their videos its because of youtube's Content ID system. The owners of copyrighted material send youtube their audio and video file of what they want to not appear. Then youtube goes through videos looking for matches with copyrighted content. Flipping the video around makes the software read the video differently and and won't register a match.

Futurama is talented in being able to get at our emotions. First "Luck of the Fryish", "The Sting" and "Jurassic Bark" [I might have missed a few]. And now this. What talent.
I am proud that these moments in this show make me cry. My heart exploded with tears of joy and I said outloud "I cant believe you fuckers did it again!"
The real beauty here is that Bender was defective. Hermes saw that and knew his job was to toss him out at any sign of imperfection. Rather than leaving him to die he looked at Bender with pure love and saw past what he lacked. He saw past his defects and couldn't push the button so to speak. Such a great scene of love and unconditional acceptance. We should all be so fortunate to give and to receive love like this :)
The message has a big hole in it, though. A backup device could easily have been installed, and it'd have been cheaper than scrapping Bender and building a new one. Kinda dropped the ball on that one.
Sure, scrapping him is free. But like I said, building an extra one to meet the quota would be more expensive than taking five minutes to have a backup unit installed.
I'd like to add to this comment if that's okay. Throughout the episode Bender is in angst about his new-found sense of fleeting mortality, however at the end of the episode we learn that Bender had just barely survived inspection. In short, the lesson of this episode, I believe, is to look at the brighter side of things, be grateful for what you have because you may be simply unaware of how lucky you are as was the case with Bender who should be just glad he got to live at all.
@moneyshotdre It's episodes like this (and a few others) that make Futurama one of my favorite animated series. But as a result of Hermes' compassion, Bender was left without a backup. In a sense that made him a little closer to being human. A loud, obnoxious, morally corrupt human but loveable despite that.
