  • After reading all this hate on Paul, One would think people would actually PREFER listening to Misha struggling through a few riffs, and making the amp sound like pure SHIT while he was at it.

  • Most of the amps sound the same because youtube compression messes with the uploads. No studio headphones or speakers are going to truly emulate what the amp + cab can do, you'll just have to turn it up to 10 and stand in front of it yourself!!!!!!!!

  • The price intimidates me way more than the front panel :|

  • wow this amp sounds pretty nice!

  • I hate the binding on that Les Paul, I think the white ones should have a darker binding on them. AWESOME amp.

  • @HurricaneTBag you're completly right!i couldn't agree more with you ;) and keep in mind that LP's are my favourite guitars ever =)

  • any1 notice a huge noise gate and compression(well maybe not compression) on Paul's voice? He says a sentence and it goes all the way to zero, and then continues. I don't know, but it really intimidates my ear. :D

  • I WANT THIS JOB!!!!!!!!

  • He had better chops in Back To The Future when he played the red gibson. Gooo johnny go goo gooo...

  • I've this amp... Fryette Sig-X... and It's NOT FOR PLAYING ROCK !

Play something other please... It's always the same game and we want BRUTAL !

  • Why does everyone hate this guy so much. Decent Demo as far as I'm concerned...

  • Pretty good last solo

  • There are so many porn words on the front of this amp xD "Spank" "vintage" "live"

the most comedic here, the "Brown, Brit and blow" xDDDD

  • He seems a little stoned in this one !

  • i have never seen him alternate pick yet!!!!!!

  • Paul looks like Declan Donnelly imo.

  • Too much fuking knobs and switches.

  • @Adol333 why? i have a jcm800 its got 6 knobs..and i understand this

  • Paul is a good player and reviewer but i dont understand why the FUCK all the amps sound the same in guitarworld videos ?!?!!?

  • @KawamurAsun so do the axes they all sound like each other .hum maybe they need to switch there shit up once in a while.lol

  • @KawamurAsun The Van Halen theory of geetar, its all in the hands

  • @KawamurAsun +100.I'd never buy any of the amps reviewed by GW if I'd to consider the sound coming out of my speakers.

  • What a bunch of ass-tards most youtuber's are. People rip on this dude so much, sure the guy looks like a hobbit and has blown out emo hair but, to rip on his playing? C'mon. He's a rock guitarist and isn't playing some black metal bullshit or playing 50million notes a second. Mind you I like those styles too.

Shut up and post your own videos of amp reviews. Oh that's right... you probably don't get paid to do that or have a huge company backing you.

  • @EricAntonik lmfdo...hobbit..

  • @EricAntonik Oh god.. Looks like a hobbit.. That made my day dear sir:)

Valid point too, I don't get all the hate...

  • You fuck sticks aint here to hear him play, your hear for the amp demo. So shut the fuck up. If all he did was play you would bitch cause he didnt talk enough about the amp...little whinny ass bitches. LICK BALLS.

  • I can't believe a publication as big as Guitar World can't get a better guitar player than Paul to do demos. Paul, you suck dude!

  • such a homo, listen to him say "spank" and "blow"

  • Nice demo, thanks.

  • oh my god

  • Comment removed

  • did he laugh after he said blow? haha

  • That amp sounds cheap and cheesy. Like some tube/solid state hybrid...

  • @AlembicVapor So does just about every other amp GW demos.

  • In professional studios, every guitarist or producer has a different method. Seems like most would agree on some type of Fender for the cleans and some type of expensive boutique head with a variety of 4x12 cabs for heavy tones. So likely on a professionally done album, you'll hear a huge disparity from small class A combos all the way up to layers of different 100-watt heads through a multitude of 4x12 cabinets.

  • @TubesInaHat You're right, but I'm betting if they're using monster heads (100+ watts) they're also using some sort of power attenuator in the studio. And you're right, they use a variety of amps, guitars, etc.

I'm looking at building a new setup that consists of three amps for Live and studio, with a switching system to go between them. I just picked up a Traynor Dark Horse for my clean sounds, and I'm going to look into some combos, and switchable powered heads for the lead/rhythm section.

  • @0AllForNaught0 When a guitarist is playing a 100+ watt head through a 4x12 in a pro studio, they most likely would NOT be using an attenuator if at all possible. The reason why is that when you've got a head cranked and you're hearing killer sound, you're hearing the preamp at its sweet spot, the power stage beginning to breakup, AND the speakers being pushed. When you use an attenuator, it alters what's coming out of the amp slightly AND you're missing the extra punch from the speakers.

  • @TubesInaHat I disagree. Kirk Hammett and Mark Morton (Lamb Of God) use Weber Power Attenuators, Eddie Van Halen is WELL known to have used a Variac voltage selector to lower the Wattage of his marshall, Paul Gilbert uses a THD Hotplate, Joe Satriani uses a PRX150-Pro, etc and so on.

If you want, I'll dig in and list a bunch more, but here's one fact: ANY studio you walk into has power attenuators at the ready to tame beastly 100+ watt heads, period. I guess these guys don't know good "tone?"

  • @TubesInaHat Also: the whole PURPOSE of a power brake/sponge/attenuator is to get that "sweet spot" you mentioned without all the punishing low end and speaker reflex of a 100+ watt head when cranked. All an attenuator does is allow you to crank your amp to good power-tube compressed levels, and then drop the volume off with the power brake. It's like having a cranked amp tone at lower volumes in most cases. It depends on your gear, however. These devices all have their quirks.

  • @TubesInaHat Here ya go: Stevie Ray Vaughn, Slash, Clapton (?) Hendrix, Dave Mustaine ALL use power brakes, ranging from a Scholtz PB, to Marshall PB-100's, lol. I don't get why Clapton would need one, but hey, he's Eric Clapton. Oh, Alexi Laiho uses a Lee Jackson amp with a built-in power attenuator, Yngwie Malmsteen's signiature amp has a built in power attenuator (wonder why he'd want that? Hmmm...)

    Should I really go on?

  • @0AllForNaught0 Thanks for redundantly explaining attenuators for us. Unlike you, I wasn't trying to CORRECT anyone. My point, which is still 100% valid is that when you've hit that sweet spot between the preamp, power amp, AND SPEAKERS, using an attenuator is going to change the end result pretty substantially. Even a Weber MASS is going to change the sound. If you want more compression and sag and are willing to sacrifice speaker breakup, then an attenuator is the way to go.

  • @TubesInaHat Nah, nah nah nah - nope. Not today man - you said "most likely NOT using an attenuator, and THAT'S what I was responding to, so eat it. Of course an attenuator is going to alter the tone in varying degrees, that isn't what we were discussing, we were discussing how most guitarists seem to like them in a studio setting, and sometimes in live situations. I gave you several examples of top guitarists that use them to defray your comment that they most likely would NOT.

  • @TubesInaHat You mentioned how you weren't "...trying to correct anyone" when responding with "...guitarist is playing a 100+ watt head through a 4x12 in a pro studio, they most likely would NOT be using an attenuator if at all possible" in response to my factual statement that many DO use them, so, I'm guessing if you think that wasn't a correction we're going to get a lesson on Fractal Curves and Relativity now? I ate your lunch. Time to go back to school, buddy.

  • @0AllForNaught0 My bad. I guess I'll just go be wrong somewhere. I'm not the one using obscenities and insulting others. If you spit out this many words when you're right, I'd "sure as fuck" hate to read the book that comes out when you're wrong.

  • @TubesInaHat @TubesInaHat Alright - let's have the debate then: 1.) where was I "wrong" mentioning most pros seem to use power attenuators, at least for smaller venues and studio recording? 2.) where was I "wrong" when saying it's practical for the small club/home guitarist to think about a lower wattage or switchable power/wattage amp instead of buying a power attenuator for a larger 100 watt amp? 3.) Where was I "wrong" when I corrected your statement that guitarists DON'T use an attenuator?

  • @TubesInaHat Listen: I've been playing for nearly 25 years, spent THOUSANDS of dollars on gear that I could have saved if I'd listened to the old-timers, professional musicians and studio pros, and I get on some of these vids and try to drop a few pearls to younger guys that will hopefully save THEM some cash. 50 watts IS PLENTY loud enough for any bar/club/outdoor gig, etc. and drives any 4x12 cab nicely. Most CAN'T USE a $2,000 amp with this much headroom, and there's other great options.

  • @TubesInaHat I had to go and buy a 16 ohm THD Hotplate to tame my Triple Recto, adding ANOTHER $370.00 to my $2,000 dollar amp just to be able to use it properly in smaller venues. I'd much rather have spent less, and tried out more 50, and 30 watt amps (Marshall JVM, Buddah Superdrive 30, Egnater Renegade 65, Krank Chadwick/Krankenstein Jr 50, etc) and there's LOADS of them!

I'm just trying to discourage less experienced players from being impulsive, and be practical about their needs.

  • @0AllForNaught0 I said I was wrong and that YOU are right. It blows me away that you not only misunderstood what I said, but you also felt the need to add another 3 stanzas explaining how right you are. I gave in. You win. It's over.

  • @TubesInaHat My bad - I thought you were being facetious - sorry. The VHT Sig X is a great amp I'd love to own, but it just isn't practical for me, financially, or utility wise, I'll leave it at that. I'd trade my Triple Recto for one, if anyone with a VHT Sig X is that ignorant, lol.

I'm just so used to all the smartasses who want to flame on this site I assumed you were just another one. Apologies.

  • @0AllForNaught0 It's cool. To be honest, I really don't want to get off on the wrong foot with anyone here. The thing about high powered heads is that every time you double power, you only get +3dB. So really, if you want to be able to crank a tube amp to its breaking point and be in the realm of sanity, 20 watts or under is about all I can take without a nice attenuator. Having said that, I like the added headroom of a 100 watt head, but I do understand that not everyone else feels that way.

  • @0AllForNaught0 Secondly, if you'd ever heard of the Fletcher–Munson ear curve, then you'd know that "punishing" low end is ALWAYS there, you're just not hearing it. Thirdly, to quote Weber's attenuator page, "...do not expect to be able to dime your amp and then use any attenuator on the market to get the exact same sound from your amp at whisper quiet volumes."

  • @TubesInaHat I'm willing to bet 90+ percent of guitarists including myself aren't so studious of the science of frequencies to have ever HEARD of the Fletcher-Munson Ear Curve, and back to my original comment on the matter: it isn't practical for most hobbyist guitarists to use a 100+ watt head in smaller gigging, recording, and house situations, period. You have heard what a Triple Rectifier sounds like when properly cranked, right? Ungodly loud at 50% and up, with the output at nominal.

  • @TubesInaHat You're sure as fuck hearing "punishing low end' if you're in the same room as a fire-breathing Triple Rectifier with a 4X12 G12T-75 cranked to nominal volumes - no one cares about the frequencies we AREN'T hearing, we're discussing volume here, right?

  • I so want his job....

  • This amp sounds FANTASTIC - but careful listeners will notice (like most un-modded heads) the tracking is still a touch off. It's the price you pay when you have so much dedicated circuitry. In my quest for the perfect amp, I've only found 3 so far that track notes perfectly: and each of those are low-wattage "lunchbox" style amps, which explains the trend towards those amp types these days.

Don't drop the cash, peeps - I wasted $1000's on "monster" heads, only to find simpler is better.

  • @0AllForNaught0 What does tracking mean? I understand lots of amp talk but not that aspect, could u please explain?

  • @epitaph664 Basically, the more circuitry between your guitar, and the speaker, the less instantaneous the response between when you play, and when you hear the note. A lot of musicians send their amps to companies like FJA to modify their circuitry to circumvent this problem, by either bypassing certain circuits or putting higher quality transformers and other circuitry in.

Lower wattage amps always sound and track better. 50 watts is plenty.

  • @0AllForNaught0 Thanks so much. It all makes alot more sense now, and also helps determine which amp i'm going to buy

  • @0AllForNaught0 lower wattage amps don't always sound better, how could you even say that? i've ABed 50 and 100 watt versions of more than a few amps and while I do like 50 watt amps, for a lot of people the 100 watt versions sound better (ie, ceriatone ots, 100 watt is a lot bigger sound, vht deliverance, 100 watt is a lot ballsier) - i own a VHT 50/CL and for anyone who wants the vht death metal sound should buy the 100/CL instead - i like the 50 myself

  • @HopePoisoned Yeah, 100 + watt amps sound great: if you're playing an arena show and cranking the master volume up enough to compress the power tubes. The other benefit of smaller amps (and also the reason for the high cost!) is that because they're not as expensive to produce, they can make up for much of the profit by installing MUCH higher quality circuitry, including the transfomers, potentiometers, and circuitry.

And when your gear is mic'ed or being directly recorded, size doesn't matter

  • @HopePoisoned - because you're amplifying the signal with your mixing anyway.

Also: if you bother to look at the recording process for professional musicians, many, or most use smaller amps in the studios, and a variety of them. Why? Fatter sounds at more reasonable volumes.

The only reason to go with a 100+ watt is if you need to fill a big staging area - like arena bands. But many nowadays are just pumping combo amps through the monitors. I own a Mesa Triple rectifier, where will I use it?

  • @HopePoisoned And lastly, I would challenge you to find ANY amp that compares with the clean tone of the current "lunchbox" amps, like the Mesa Transatlantic, Traynor Darkhorse, Orange Dual/Tiny Terror, Egnater Rebel 30, etc.

The 80's is over, friend - musicians are getting smarter about tone. Why buy a 100+ watt amp when you'll need to add a $370.00 power attenuator/soak to be able to use it (fully compressed!) in a normal setting?? I stand by my facts.

  • @0AllForNaught0

JCM 900 4102 combo. if you kow what youre doing, set to channel 2, lower the gain, push the reverb, slightly scoop the mids. best clean tone on earth, and breaks up if you hit it hard.

And yes, it has a reverb tank comparable to a fender twin.

  • @Geetarfrik I know what you're saying - but there's a lot of amps that get great clean tones. But those low-watt class A amps are in a different category all together. And you really have to play one to understand - because of the class A power, the responsiveness to your picking is off the charts.

In a class A amp, current is flowing at all times through the tubes. In an AB amp, the voltage to the power tube grid fluctuates constantly between notes, going on and off with each note.

  • @0AllForNaught0

I think your problem is that your overstating the importance of cleans sounds. Quite frankly, your audience could care less about clean sounds..they cant tell one from the other. It doesnt excite them in any way. Its the driven sounds that separate the men from the boys..not cleans

  • @Rizzy55 My "problem" (lol) is that with a big 100+ watt head, any "dirty" sounds that are usable in a live require you to crank the thing up to levels that don't work in clubs and smaller outdoor gigs. Unless you buy a power attenuator, or the amp has switchable power, they generally sound like a distorted mess at lower volumes. You can't get the power section of a monster like that to compress at lower volumes.

  • ahaha blow!

  • Get a rivera k-tre!

they are great with whatever pickup you throw at them!

  • i had this video run while i was browsing for other things on a different tab and each time he switched to a new settign this amplifer really made it count and i couldn't believe it! next to my engl this would definitly be it's missing brother!

  • Yeah some people play shit core... Like paul riario

  • brown, brit and blow... rofl

  • The clean stuff sounds like heaven

  • Just bought 2 Jackson SL2Hs and put dimarzio p'ups in them. Any suggestions on a all tube amp. Fryette, Marshall, Mesa/boogie, Soldano, Rivera?

  • @PrsFenderJackson1980 Soldano or Fryette most likely

  • @PrsFenderJackson1980 Diezel Herbert

  • does he think his hair looks good lol?

  • I hope not, lol.

  • This guy let every amp or guitar sound the same -WTF ??????

  • The tone comes from the player, the amp and the guitar are just instruments.

  • some of it does yeah, but you get no tone without the amp and the guitar, and you get no distortion from just a guitar. Lots of people have jumped on the bandwagon with the whole tone comes from the hands thing.

  • look at his settings... hes a freaking idiot!

  • plus im convinced that the way they mic the amps and the software they use(the noise gate and compressor that you can hear when he talks...) really mess with the sound.

  • @apguitarguy401 dont they hear that themselves? It sounds terrible but they test really nice gear -what a pity that after watching such a video you have no actual idea how those amps or guitars sound

  • I'm under the impression he doesn't read his feedback #1, and doesn't give a damn #2. He couldn't dial in an amp if his life depended on it.

  • Mesa Roadster Killah???

  • Nah.

  • If any of you guys are interested in this amp, be prepared to wait at least a month ad more or go used. Just a heads up. I probably won't be getting mine for at least 2 and half months.

  • I'm selling mine if anyone is interested.

  • how much?

  • micheal j fox is pretty good but he doesnt have much versatility

  • @ihatebobsaget1989 Are you telling me that this SUCKER IS NUCLEAR!!!!!????

  • @ihatebobsaget1989

Dude, M. J. Fox can't evven play guitar, he has parkinsons

  • @2011dtish21 the joke went right over your head.

  • @metallica5252 I got it actually, since when has tremors helped guitar

  • @ihatebobsaget1989

Dude, M. J. Fox can't even play guitar, he has parkinsons

  • I like it! Sounds solid.

  • lol at 0:05 I thought he was gonna say "this is the mother fucker!" :p

  • I dont like this amp at all.

  • solid amp. i just got one. blows away the rivera ktre for lead/chunk sounds. but the ktre had a more sparkly clean

  • that is a better review then the video, not to knock the sig x.

i have one, its amazing but you have to sit down with it for a good hour to understand why its better then a powerball or egnater or even the pitbull in some ways.

it does deathcore very well...i dont know why people think its not for distortion chunking. thats the entire point of the gain voicing!

turn the gains both to 3 and you have a marshall. at 6 you have a powerball. at 10 you have a record contract.

  • @celariomfoam lol...that's funny as hell!

  • @celariomfoam

    i remind that one!! hahaha

  • I tried one he other day back to back with an Egnater tourmaster 4100head , and didn't cut it. Not that much responsive as the Egnater, that goes to the EQ as well as the distinction of the notes especially when playing fast with distortion on it. Definitelly less response as an ENGL powerball.

  • not everyone plays deathcore.

  • @Massivecarcrash fortunately

  • The Sig:X is awesome, i got one last week :D Paul's great but if there's one thing i'd criticize about his reviews it's that he's TOO positive; never really has anything bad to say about the gear. still very helpful though.

  • wouldn't you be if all you did all day was jam on cool stuff?

  • well a paycheque might have something to do with it *cough*jeff gurstmen*cough*

  • VHT is dead now its called fryette sig:x

  • i love how late they put these on utube versus on ondemand

  • how much does this cost usually?

  • Wow man! check out the hands off playing to hit the Boost switch at 5:14 Paul you rock as always!

  • This or an ENGL Savage?

  • The Savage, definitely.... ;)

  • Definitely

  • This or River knucklehead tre???

  • Rivera**

  • Hey, does anybody know what he plays at 3:13 or is it just improvisation

  • It's something he made up. He can't play Famous artists' songs for copyright reasons...

  • thank you for: sittingontherooftop

    for answer my question

    ALECSX :S

  • i like how for all of these reviews the have the nicest guitars known to man. FUCK.

  • This amp's tone sounded really smooth to me. Even on higher gain settings, there was something pleasant about it's response. The only shortcoming I picked up from this video is lack of clarity. It seems like when he held out his long notes, there was a little more fuzz than note. I don't know if I'll ever find an amp that's as clear as I want it to be, though. I would rather have this amp than mine.

  • for clarity i'd pick a Soldano SLO or a Bogner Ecstasy or maybe a Müller Amplification

  • ok i have a quiestion, is not form the video but i am new in those things and i only want to know that:

if i have em.. a head of 100w with a cabinet of let me say em.. 200w, would i have all the 200w of the cabinet and all the 100w of the head or i will only have the 100w of the head?

if somebody knows please tell me ; D

    ALECSX :S

  • I´d say it depends on the impedance you put on your amp and the cabinet. Get some informations about it, to make shure not to brake your amp!

  • you will have the 100 watts of the head.

But since the cabinet can handle much more, the amps tone will be much clearer.

  • Whats the first song he played?

  • WOW, that is tight!!

  • this amp really rocks!!!!!

  • VHT is now known as Freyette Amps. The amps r the same just the company name has changed. There rhe sickest amps around!!

  • He looks like Michael J. Fox.

  • that clean is gorgous! i know i sound gay by saying that but it really does!

  • no you don't sound gay at all. the dirty is great too.... this is one of the best amps i have heard... better than marshall, mesa, and diezel....

  • totally agree, today i heard about diezel amps, i was very exited i absolutely wanted it... until i saw the price ...

then i saw this amp, IT'S EVEN BETTER !!!!!

how much does it cost ?

  • $2900 my friend. it is also really expensive. quality comes at a price.

  • =( ... why does great amps cost that much ???

  • because it is, obviously, great:)

  • This is the most versatile amp I've ever seen (without effects anyway)...amazing......sounds good......

But I hate that Paul guy.....

  • I like it...I like it alot !

  • Paul from guitar world needs a better writer. Too much repetition.

  • It's about the amp, not about the writing. If he can play some licks that showcase an amp's different sounds, that's good enough for me.

  • this has a billion features...

id like to play it before i really say anything though

    sounds good through video though

  • With no doubt the best aps!!!

  • this guy always somehow seems to make amps sound spineless, I don't know what it is. He's not a terrible player, but for some reason he doesn't demonstrate the amp's real potential. I want to hear dragon's fire coming from your speakers!

  • i dont think he mics the cabs...i think he takes a line directly off the head which almost always has no balls.

  • Are you serieus? And they dare put "head and cabinet" in the video name ...

the Sig:X kicks major ass though .. even here you can hear that it's not using it's full fire.

  • i wanna hear what that sounds like if he has his guitar tuned to drop C :)

  • ISIS sounded great last night with these and there guitars to b..fryette is the new name tho...

  • confusing as hell but good head

  • it sound pretty good

  • ha! playing my custom! xD

  • I am selling my left kidney so I can buy this stack. I figure I only need one kidney and one half-stack to live.

  • Isn't it illegal to sell your kidney...

  • only in Amerca...

  • Or you could try getting a fucking job you lazy bastard. It's only around $2000 and these days if you can't save $2000 from your job or ANOTHER job for a short time then that says ALOT about you. But I suppose you have at least 4 good excuses why you can't get a part time job or a job period...

  • I have higher priorities than some people that smoke crack and write rude things on you tube.

  • Would those priorities include a part time job by any chance?

  • I have a real job, a real house payment, a real life. I don't live with my mom. I ended up selling both my kindeys in Mexico last week. So now I can get a Sig X.

  • Holy cow ! you should have never sold both of them!

  • LOLOL

  • nice tone !

  • would have loved to hear a heavy metal setting.

  • This amp is a beast.But I'd rather have my Deliverance 120.

  • i would give my left nut for that amp

  • done deal XD

  • the best comment!

  • chuck in the right one aswell and a pack of ur pubes and the amp is yours

    hehehe
