Rimantas could have decided to eject himself and leaving the plane to crash in the crowd, but He didn't...and We italians will never forget this...God bless You Rimantas, We'll always have gratitude for the heroic action that You did.
we were also feeling that the climbing after the runway was too slow, the engines replys to the input with lots of delay...and then he closed the loop and we still don't know why, maybe looking at the runway he thought he was higher and so quite safe for a loop, but wasn't that! anyway replying to "rogius", the plane had not to make that loop on the display, he was not heading to the crowd, he didn't ejected because he had simply no time to realise ho low he was
hi all, i'm an italian man, and i was present there that day, even the saturday before, when i saw the Flanker training for the display. I can say that both days, we had the impression that the pilot was quite unable to find the airport (it's little 900M grass runway), and that it was one of his first experience on a short field. Also we noticed immediatly that during the saturday display he concluded the half loop with a roll, but that didn't happened the day of the show.
it's say that he didn't ejected because plane was heading to crowd or to those house area, he wanted turn plane from it and to protect innocent people. Sadly there was no time to eject.
this lithuanian pilot was near to his dream to become a cosmic pilot... had left some more training and he would be a russian army cosmic pilot... but there wasnt his fault of this crash... manufacturer`s fault..
I believe, and in a similar way to the SU-27 of Ukraine, the plane suffered engine overheating, and thus losing much of its thrust on its almost vertical climb. I can´t understand why the pilot did such an "optimistic" maneuvre, I don´t get what he was thinking about, I guess he was so much confident that missed his true altitude. The other thing I can´t get is why he didn´t ejected...what was going on on his mind? Blinded by his Big Mistaque? I guess he just lost his situational awareness. SAD.
This is whats often refered to as pancakeing, the pilot pulled out of the dive at too low of an altitude and slamed into the ground. even though the aircraft was level with the ground his Angle of attack(the direction momentum is taking the plane) was to great.
For a similar crash see the Thunderbird crash video. in that case thunderbird 6 pulled a low altitude loop and pancaked. but he was able to eject in time.
yeah the plane did pancake, but i heard once that the pilot's F-16 had a malfunction or something... he found that out in the middle of his loop, then he was ready to eject. I cant remember where i hear or read this from, but yeah...
No the problem in that case was his altimeter was not calibrated to ground level so he was much lower when he entered the loop than he though he was, and he simply didn't have enough altitude to save the plane.
