He made them drink a poisoned wine which blew them to pieces and explains their disfigurement. After drinking the wine their bones were rebound together with metal. Alexander then bound them to his will and they became his servants, now they capture people and bring them to Alexander for his experiments.

Since you're moving with the elevator downwards, jumping will only make you fall slightly slower while the elevator continues at the same speed, even though it may seem to you inside the elevator that you're moving up. Basically, if the impact would've killed you in the first place, jumping will not help a squat! :P
