I own every Microprose game (one of each of course) on C64, PC, Amiga and ST - excluding the arcade games,as I am a sim/strategy kind of guy, rather than a "twitch" player. It's why I never owned a console back in the day!!
men i played that game like crazy, best of all was the mission difficulty discription,i always went with the hardest simple because ( and i remember like it was yesterday ) ....gong ho mission for people who dont care about details like survival.....and because you got the most points
medal of honour, dsc, silver star, bronce star, ph, ... as if it was yesterday, hellfire, sidewinder, Mil 24 hind, ...,its a shame there is no new version as classy as this old one was feat. iraq, somalia, afghanistan, serbia and so on... WE WANT MORE
HELL YEAH! This was one of my favs on my C64. Brings back memories when I would play this, F-14 Tomcat, Project Firestart, Defender of The Crown, Ultima 4, Legacy of the Acients and Bard's Tale 1-3 while on summer vacation in the 80s.
sega did a cover ov it taking out the tune ride of the valkyries tune and put a new tune in and unlike the C64 version the Mega drive version used it's missiles instead of its cannon
Movie fans will note two cool references to movies involving attack helocopters in this. The music is from Apocolypse Now but the rising of the bird is right ouf of Blue Thunder (on the Highway when Candy Clark is stopped by the cops)
I used to play this game on my C64 back in '88!! I was only 10 then, but damn this brings back memories. I still remember the sound of "ride of the valkyries" when the game loaded.
Now - with a C64 emulator and a D64 file you can now play the floppy version like I did, loading up quickly and played as they should have been! I was one of a few in the UK that bought the floppy in the early days when Gunship and other titles were appearing! :)
This was a fine game at the time. It was fun launching Hellfires at Mi-24s and bunkers, then trying to crawl home after having one engine and the rotor mast shot up by the former.
Because I liked adventure, RPG and Sims more than arcade and platform games, I did odd jobs and a Saturday job to save to get a floppy! This allowed me to play games like this in all their glory! This game, Stealth Fighter, Infocom adventures, and many others all made the expensive floppy worthwhile! So much so, I still have my C64 and floppy (and cassette!) today and still play these games!
I loved Gunship on my C64, but damn was it a pain in the arse on Cassette!. It would take me 50 on the tape counter to get to the title and start menu, then it was another 150 on the counter to actually "start" the 1st mission, then after you finised the mission, you would need to go back to side A and load it up to 50 again, and then 150 another time to get to the 2nd mission!!.. arrrgghg.. and then it would crash on me by mission 4 !!. lol :)
Hehe, i had same problem with another Microprose simulator game.. "Project Stealth Fighter" (on other computers known as "F-19 Stealth Fighter") was very fun, and very advanced for being a c64 flightsimulator, but had to load casette tape (2 sides i think) between each mission :)
I agree totally. I timed it once, it took 27 mins to load from tape. I remember watching that little counter on the C2N roll round so slowly. Thanks for the memory!
@blade004 You Brits had it rough by being forced to use tape for everything on the c64. Disks must have been like magic technology from another planet LOL
@blacbraun Well i am Australian not British and tape didn't need to be used for everything in Britain and Australia, there was always the option to buy a disk drive, the only problem was trying to afford one :( At the time my mother could only get me a tape drive.
@blacbraun But yes, FINALLY getting enough cash together to get a disk drive was heaven on earth!!! and as you said it really did feel like technology from another planet :)

@UKJohnUK Oh it's so good. But we can still play Longbow 2 witch is it's spiritual successor and an amazing game in it's own right.

These were the days, when game developers actually made you learn HOW to fly an aircraft, and carry out a mission at the same time.
