  • This is way too provacative, no wonder they had such bad morals in those days, they couldnt keep their clothes on...im glad i live in this time where we have common decency

  • Happy 110th Birthday Dietrich! What becomes a legend? You know it's you!

  • Christina Aguilera just remade this song.

  • @Bassai really?!

  • @gomika yup. look it up on you tube.

  • Thank you for nothing bitch :D

  • Im living in the wrong generation...

  • @TheHeartguzzeler Heh I'm Living in the wrong generation too !

  • I was told by an old movie production worker-he must have been 75 back in 1981- he told me that Emil Jannings scene with Dietrich where he violently attacks her was not acting. Jannings actually hated this woman because Von Sternberg was giving more attention to Dietrich than him. When Von Sternberg called cut 'Jannings continued to try to strangle Dietrich

  • the song for Frankie Cocozza made for him

  • Madelene Cann we miss you...

  • love this movie abd Marlene is one of my fave hollywood golden age movie actress

  • Is this whence that scene in the Blazing Saddles emanated?

  • Does anyone know where that eerie shot of the exterior of the Blue Angel was taken? The building is listing toward the street as Rath walks down the street. They make it appear to be near a seaside dock. I swear I saw that building on a universal studio tram ride of back lots in the '70's, but I cannot seem to resolve this. Anyone?

    It's driving me crazy.

  • @myrtlebox movie was shot by and in UFA studios in berlin in partnership with paramount

  • It seems, the soviet actress Ljubov Orlova in film ''THE CIRCUS'' have copied M. Dietrich. Better or worse?

  • Ich liebe diesen Song, wie der Rest des Films Blue Angel, schade, dass Stars wie Marlene Dietrich nicht von neuem geboren.

  • This was a great, funny movie for the first 1:15. Then it degenerated with some German pain and angst that ruined it all in the final 20 minutes.

  • @RuflessRecords I found the last 20 minutes very moving and compelling. Jannings played brilliantly. The last shot was a variation on a shot used earlier in the film and it made it very clear that Prof. Rath was a farce, both as a teacher and as a clown. That is what the story of this film is all about.

  • Pause at 1:14 and you can see a Black man.

  • Romance amongst decadence. What's not to like.

  • what the fuck?! Why is this in English? I just saw this movie, and it was in German!!!

  • @NazTb0y they filmed this film in german and english at the same time!

  • @evamarimo as Marlene Dietrich herself once said, "Hör auf mit diesem Englischen Quatsch!" The German version is much better, but I guess it is pretty impressive that they filmed this in two languages at the same time. I wonder how they accomplished that... Was the English one filmed in an alternate universe?

  • @NazTb0y Back in the early days of film, a lot of actors had to reshoot and record the dialogue in several different languages - Buster Keaton speaks about it in one of his interviews. Whereas in silent film, the pantomime basically didn't need much dialogue and was interpreted by just about every culture by the actions of the performer alone.

  • @NazTb0y

    Are you really that thick?

  • 1930 wow wusste gar nicht das es da schon aufnahmen von ihr gab, sie bleibt immer in unseren herzen

  • She did not have perfect pitch and not the best voice in her time. But she had something, something intangible, something desirable, something human. She was older than I but I loved her and still do.

  • @erichudson: Marlence Dietich? Not fall in love with her? Are you kidding me!

  • WHY WOULD ANYONE FALL O U T OF LOVE WITH HER ?

  • beautiful weimar era berlin kabarett

  • nice but audrey hepburn the No1

  • @SpaceCowboy641 A traitor? Are you a neo-nazi or something?

  • @SpaceCowboy641 Traitor? She left Germany because she would have ended up in a concentration camp wearing a pink triangle.

  • @TheNeonRabbit She left Germany because she hated the nazis, full stop.

  • @SpaceCowboy641 Du bist pervers mit Deinem hässlichen und braunen Gedanken......Dietrich war ein großartige Frau und Künstlerin .

  • As is the case with the few jewels in the human species... Marlene is one Magical Jewel that transpires time and generations; a classic piece!

  • Seeing this, one can't help to wonder how Marlene wasn't a big star before this film. However, it's easy to see how she became one after it. She projected a strange aura of sex appeal combined with a certain aloofness, that was irresistable. No one in film before or since has had that quality. Not to mention those fantastic LEGS! They could almost speak dialogue themselves. A truly unique, unforgettable woman.

  • Sweet Marlene!Very beautiful!

  • Those "high school boys" all look about 30.

  • A perfect song perfected by Marlene Dietrich. Makes you not want to fall in love again, never want to but can't help it.

  • This is such a great scene. Marlene exudes both sensuality & innocence at the same time. She was an original.

  • Comment removed

  • @jdsmyhero85 That was Greta Garbo...

  • Marlene is AWESOME!! She exudes sensuality and passion, and at the same time is so very classy, even when playing women of little virtue. She is dignified and strong, yet without compromising her femininity and sexualtiy. She's the rare combination of sexy and classy.

Today's "stars" can't come close to her. Even Madonna, who tries to imitate Marlene in dress and appearance, can't hold a candle to the magnificent Marlene Dietrich.

  • AMAZING WOMAN.

  • In the words of Herr Professor...."Cock-a-doodle-do!"

  • As Lilly von schtuup would say: "I'm tarred"

  • I'm tarred....

  • I was so enthralled. Awesome woman.

  • Omg yes she a skank but he a fool!

  • Saw this movie and was disturbed at the fall of the professor, shocking tragedy. The director stated he was just making a movie, while others paralleld the fall of him with the Weimar to deprivation and excess. I do not think I will enjoy this song like I had before when I first heard it with that car commercial years back.

  • This is one must-see movie. It is actually pretty disturbing, and I personally would classify it as a horror movie. What happens to the poor buffoon of a professor is nightmarish.

Lola-Lola, that beautiful, charming and commanding woman is one lace-dressed ticket to hell.

PS, see the German version with the subtitles. In the English dubbed version, half the dialogue is not translated, so you miss what the secondary characters have to say.

  • @MorganScorpion I thought I was the only person that viewed this movie as so tragic that it hedged on horror. I mean they humiliated and cracked eggs on this pitiful man's head. Yes, it could be classified as horror, it's such a psychological thing... :(

  • @MorganScorpion I prefer the German version too, but this English version isn't dubbed - the movie was shot in English with all the original actor's voices in addition to a German version.

  • millions os people was dieing at thay very moment!!! so sad

  • @phillyvinilli I think that's a fair comment. I also think that as she matured, she became a great performer. Great story teller. Lili Marlene could make you weep. But she was an old lady by the time she could move someone to tears. Was initially a bimbo.

  • @phillyvinilli bleh for you

  • @phillyvinilli I do get what you're saying. However, there were many many other performers just like them. It's these 'stars' that made it to the top, and I think that's because their audiences saw something special in them. Some degree of understanding exactly what it was that they offered and that appealed to their audience. I do think that their essence of 'This is what you desire, now have your fill of me, but know that I KNOW what this is about' was significant.

  • she's just wonderful <3

  • Every time I see her singing in these videos some guy ends up interrupting her.

  • Hasta la eternidad Marlene Dietrich

  • Great performance, Marlene, but to me this misses a little bit of ltn Gruber ;)

  • wow,i dont believe how old is this, very good this video .

  • Her first flick! Dietrich was an oft copied chanteuse who could break your heart and have you come back for more. The parody that Madeline Kahn did in "Young Frankenstein" was hilarious!

  • @mickyblue247 it was 'blazing saddles'

  • Such an amazing scene!

  • Her charm is how much off key she is. The song is beautiful and her sound is beautiful too. No one else could do this, but many could sing better and on key. She was a one off. I absolutely love her.

  • Saw this a LONG time ago. All I remember is that the Professor came to a sticky end somehow.

  • What a beauty. Garbo was too.

  • watz a gurl tu du?

  • German chicks and German cars....the best and most wanted machines in the world!!!!

  • is that the old version christina's falling in love again, woooooooooow,

  • I love her phrasing in this.

  • Would be possible to find this scene with a little bit more of quality?

  • @fjmc39 thank god you found this, there's this proverb in moroccan arabic that says: lord give me one eye... Lord give me two. and there's another one that says: if you are not satisfied with one peace of bread, well be it with a half

  • @fjmc39 Do U realize that many films had disintegrated by the time anyone thought of preserving them.

Most of the flicks turned to gelatized mush.

    Many classics were lost forever.

So if this is the quality of the original film,

    I wouldn't be surprised.

We R Blessed that we still have this :)

I suppose someone brilliant could remaster it?

  • Cher Auguste.......i LOVE it...typix german..............lol...me and my red bull....excuse........lolo

GOOD NIGHT otherwise in New york is day again...but i forget....THE TOWN THAT NEVER SLEEPS....like you!:)

    Kissssss;)))

  • cool video, she was a great pop singer!!

  • does anyone have whole film?

  • min. 1:47 *-* !!!!!!!

  • I mention Dietrich in The Celebrity Song.

  • the addicts :)

  • A classic showing how something can be completely juxtaposed within one act. Filthily naughty, yet completely innocent all at once. So rare.

  • gosh does anyone know where i can find the german version of this?

  • Good Song in eine schöne Leistung!

  • this inspires even more admiration for Madeline Kahn's Lili Von Shtuppe.. "I'm Tired"

  • @nelsonwilby Haha! Indeed. As I was watching this it made me instantly think of that.

  • I have loved this film since I was a kid!

I think that this role of Jannings is better than 'The First Command' & 'The Way of All Flesh'; his Oscar winning films.

  • te amo Marlene Dietrich por siempre, te admiro y me enamore de ti desde la primera vez que te vi...Eres una hermoso ángel, gracias por existir

  • This is classical!!!

  • I like Klaus Nomi's version; it's comical.

  • loved this movie :0) thank you for this clip!

  • The epithet "box office poison" was about Katherine Hepburn after "Sylvia Scarlet" not Dietrich.

  • thank you very much for sharing I am 43

  • Marlene had a strength that many women in Hollywood (there were a couple though.) lacked during that era. She was ahead of her time. Yes she was sexy, and pushed the envelope. But that is not what attracts me and people i know to her. She was a woman, strong and proud and she was not going to be pushed around.

  • @Nohname1 I sing this in a very haunting and melancholy way and I feel this ever since I 1st watched it.

I once really believed I had lived in this time cuz I can remember it '-'

    I wuz made dat way...

    I cahn't Hellllpp it!

    And Yes...

I am one of those Poor slops that...

Love has Always Been My Game.

  • @Nohname1 fag

  • @bloodwrage if only...oh and if that was meant to hurt better come up with something more original honey.

  • @Nohname1 it was meant to be compliment...

  • @bloodwrage If you did a winky face ; - ) or something I wouldn't have assumed the worst. That being said I hate that word, to many haters out there use it.

  • Thanks for posting

  • I love Marlene! No one like her...ever!

  • Marlene Dietrich... in den 30gern ein Star und heute unvergessen immer noch ein Star! Wunderschön und talentiert!

  • Wow... One of the hundreds of reasons why I love YouTube

  • @anonymystery13 First word out of my mouth: Wow! Yes.

  • @anonymystery13 DITTO !!

  • ..."Hey Tex are you in showbusiness?"

    ..."No Ma'am"

..."Then get your feet off the stage!"

  • All Dietrich had to do in this scene was cross and uncross those incredible legs and she'd have been a star regardless.

  • It worked for Sharon Stone. Oh wait...

  • Hey there Herr Kimmler, watch out for the American hussies too.

  • So this is what Blazing Saddles was parodying.

  • Marlene Ditrich Vs Klaus Nomi song for LITTLE CHIRLDREN

  • lol we watched this in german at school but it was in german.

  • I don't think the men were Listening though, I think they were Looking.

  • Yes, she oozes sxuality and confidence that was rare in that day and age. Hugely charismatic. But no, I don't think she could sing worth beans.

  • I love this! Excellent!

  • She was extraordinary in her time for her bravado and sensuality.... Descriptions advise that Marlene was Bi... these days she may be considered a mix of KD LANG for her voice and beliefs and Annie Lennox for her individuality and beliefs and Madonna for unpure and never before seen in the public... 'In Your Face' this is me! ... mmm

  • Yes, Streep and Madonna (recognizing the enorous difference in quality between them) are products of a much more mundane sensibility. Dietrich's "bravado and sensuality" represent a statement about sex; she comes out of Weimar & the 1920's, the sexual revolution. Her mystique is about being a "lost woman" as well as a femme fatal. The romance of sex is still the romance of fatality in Dietrich. And, 8myvrab, you're wrong about the men not listening, there's profound sexuality there!

  • Sorry folks, neither Madonna, nor Meryl, can catch up to her, nor anybody else. They called her the Divina Marlene. That's all...

  • Well maybe Lili Von Shtupp ;-)

  • Absolutely :D

  • They do not make them like Marlena Dietrich, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford and Lana Turner anymore. The closest we have probably would be Meryl Streep. I love this song. Thanks for the post.

  • completely agree. i love meryl streep!

  • come on, Madonna is not a singer, she is just a performer.

  • Amen.

  • If Marlene was a "singer", Madonna certainly is, too. Marlene was a great and

legendary star, but her singing was no

better than Madonna's is now...in fact, Madonna has a better singing voice than

    Marlene had....who really talk-sings more

    than sings.

  • Marlene will always be better than Madonna is now, in my opinion.

  • Madonna is a product. She can't sing, and she's not even in the same LEAGUE as Marlene was.Marlene oozed class, and fashion. I agree with you,Marlene will ALWAYS be better than the Kabala worshiping Madonna... blech! :P

  • Yes FREEW0RLD2012, Madonna should be retired by now.

    She's lost it.

  • My point was,Madonna never had it.

  • oh come on, what a stupid comparison...

  • I believe the appropriate term here is "You shut your whore mouth"

  • Dietrich "owns" this song. All other renditions pale in comparison.

  • Damn Marlene must have been craaazzyy young. Love her soooo much! :D

  • Well, she was born in 1901 so she would be like 19 in this film. Marlene and Lauren were the sexiest female teenagers, I swear to God.

  • Try 29. She had already had her daughter Maria.

  • Oh, yeah, sorry my math skills suck. Well, at least I can type:)!!!

  • She was 29, of course. I prefer the german-language version of the film - she was even more sexy when she sings in german

  • she was 29 in fact...she was born in 1901 and the film was shot in 1929-30

  • I am surprised at how chubby she looks in this film. I am so used to seeing her slim.

  • Well this is Marlene before becoming hollywood diva, and I must say I am big Marlene fanatic, but the true is I like her more like this :-)

  • Chubby? Are you on crack? lol

I think she just has on baggy pantaloons, or whatever they called them back then. Her arms look great and toned!

Did anyone see Madeline Kahn do a parody of this in the movie "Blazing Saddles" as Lili Von Schtupp? lol

  • well chubby is the wrong word, but in her hollywood years she was a little thinner. everybody can see that. i think at the end of the twenties women did not yet aspire to be "thin" thin...

  • True, very true. Regardless... I'd kill to have the kind of sex appeal that Marlene had. Absolutely fantastic. And hey, mazze00, thanks for the positive feedback rather than some of the hateful comments one receives on YouTube! ;)

  • no problem ;-)

how come you are a fan of marlene? i mean to us germans she is an icon because of all she stood for during the nazi-regime and after, but how do americans see her? from what i remember she wasn´t all that famous in the states. in fact she was considered box office poison for the most time...

  • I'm an American and I thought she was Class personified.Beautiful. I don't know about any other American, but I thought she was GORGEOUS!

  • I don't know about all of the whole nazi thing... I admit I'm pretty old, 56 years old, but I was born after ww2 and saw Marlene in movies mostly in movies in the afternoon after school, so I can't give you any perspective on the whole "box office poison" thing mazze. I'm just giving you my own opinion and that's that I think that she oozed sex appeal, regardless of where she lived or what type of poltics may or may not have played a part in her career. Take care, nice to meet you! :)

  • Her anti-Nazi stance, while commendable, is almost irrelevant; though she was also a staunch anti-Vietnam critic, which I found heartening. Her mystique speaks for itself and it speaks for a universal symbolism too. She was the embodiment of a highly nuanced and exotic sexuality. And don't forget, she was European, which to you as another European seems mundane, but to an American is an aspect of her world-weary sophistication. Then, there's just plain nostalgia!

  • why is her "anti-Nazi stance" "irrelevant" just because she was also an anti-Vietnam critic? and what do you mean with:

"And don't forget, she was European, which to you as another European seems mundane, but to an American is an aspect of her world-weary sophistication."

i couldn´t find translations for the words "mundane" and "world-weary" that seem to make sense in your sentence?

  • No, it's only "irrelevant" because it's not why I love her; her politics only interest me incidentally because she's not an intellectual celebrity, she's a movie star and what and what makes her a person of significance has to do with that aspect of her being, not her moral fiber. As I said, it's commendable, but not primary. "World-weary" means jaded in a picturesque way, like Young Werther, maybe. "Mundane" means everyday or trite or quotidian, i.e. not exciting or transcendental.

  • The "box office poison" thing was only after the movie "Knight without Armor" did badly. She revived her career in the west with "Destry Rides Again". The American Film Institute named her the 9th greatest female star of all time and she has a legacy for being a glamorous and exotic beauty.

  • yea, check out the christina aguilera version!! :)

  • This is the english version! Great! I've never seen it before.

  • This looks like a great movie.

  • Comment removed

  • So true. <3

  • YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS i agreeeeeee

  • heard of christina aguilera's version? it's so good!

  • Yep I heard it, I love it! It's a really good, sexy and mysterious cover!
