  • River Man is such an incredibly powerful song.

  • is it true he used to have cocaine parties with escorts?

  • What if Nick joined Pink Floyd haha

  • Not to undermine or discredit or devalue Nick Drakes bewildering talent I am also taken by his sister's absolute devastating beauty ( imagine how beautiful she would have been in her youth). In fact the entire family had amazing genes.

  • So hey. Can you try and upload part 1? :(

  • His sister has a really nice accent :P

  • @jerzy862 Thats because they were upper class. Have a good listen as its not an accent you'll hear much these days. She also has been distinguished with having the hairiest vagina in a T.V. scene. Google it.

  • Nick perfected the art of letting the instrument speak for you.

  • DAVE MATTHEWS IS A THIEF!

  • @powerface71 a very dull one at that

  • seems so easy just to let it go on by

  • If you guys wanna know what is on that letter watch the other documentary called A stranger among us! she reads it there too!

  • it seems that Nicks sister really cared about her brother alot..

  • k, this is toally random but while a was watching this video, i was quietly playing river man on my guitar, and while quietly singing it, the video played a clip of river man at the exact line i was singing, it was so trippy! i was like "oh...my..god..that was AWESOME!" :P so ya. just thought id share that.

  • /watch?v=yPTaPEAocKE&feature=related fin here the complete reading of the letter.

  • whats the name of the song at 5:08??

  • @happy12234 Hi - It is called "Chime of a City Clock". It can be found on his second album "Bryter Layter". Enjoy!

  • how did nick die? i just recently found out about him

  • @FranticBandTV... he died of an overdose of antidepressants.

  • Comment removed

  • @FranticBandTV The particular drug was tryptizol. Pharma meds were a very new science in the seventies. And to be honest, pharma meds are still in their infancy even today. I think they were too strong and overwhelming for his delicate system. His energetic sensitivity is evident in his music and persona. Most kids who have sensitive dispositions are often mis-diagnosed by conventional medicine as depressed and thus medicated. It is a sad fate for sensitives and artists even today.

  • I've been a fan since 2006. Sad that it took so many decades for Drake's music to be excavated... :(

  • I love Nick Drake, but all the extra crap they added to his Bryter Layter album makes me sad :( Ruining his wonderful voice/guitar work with a bunch of noise... Psh.

    His sister is adorable.

  • this is awesome.

    I must get this docu.

anyone know what year it's from? looks like mid 80's

  • wow, i'd love to hear it without being littered with the fluff these ol' boys added.

  • the style of this documentary really reminds me of that in the beatles anthologies. don't know if any of the same people were involved, but definitely when there's long shots of his room or other environments while his songs are playing.

  • Is it just me, or does his sister come off as slightly disingenuous?

  • No It's just you 'she's lovely

  • i only like his songs with his own guitar, nothing else, for some reason... just nick. nothing else.

  • @inthebehljahr i totally agree

  • @inthebehljahr I'm glad we got to hear an album with just his voice and guitar but I love the accompaniments on Five Leaves Left and Bryter Layter, particularly the string arrangements. The songs wouldn't be complete without the other instruments. Imagine River Man without the strings! Unthinkable

  • rOBERT kIRBY rip

  • Joe Boyd so crucial

  • I think John Martyn and Nick Drake were on the same label and friends . He even dedicated Solid Air to Nick.

  • nick and john martin were friends....i heard it on a radio 2 interview with graham coxon

  • are you on crack jake1995k ?

  • I`ve just returned from the Nick Drake gathering at Tanworth In Arden..........amazing day ....god bless you man!

  • Slitheringinterstate,

    Bad day at the office?

Is there any need for that outburst?

  • damn it cuts off when she's reading the letter :(

  • was that supposed to happen?

  • @jazzmunky damn that sucked

  • agreed

  • i want to hear his voice when hes just talks not sings i wonder what he sounded like what a great singer and sounds like he was a really good person

  • @raylj318

he reads a poem in the album Family Tree, i can't recall the name though.

  • Jose Gonzalez sounds just like this guy...what a little copy cat, hahaha!!!

  • I'm a fan of both guys (saw jose live, pity you can't see nick live, even when he was alive) and I think that they have both destinctive sounds, similar but at the same time oh so far apart

  • Jazzgod,

Shut the fuck up you low IQ cunt.

Sure, Jose Gonzalez ripped off Nick Drake.

But guess what dipfuck? Nick Drake ripped off John Martyn.

And then Beck ripped off Nick Drake AND John Martyn to make the album "Sea Change".

Everyone rips off everyone...everyone's music at best is recycled ideas through a mariginally unique filter.

  • I agree but the actual term is appropriation. And it's crucial and unavoidable in the arts.

  • robert kirby did a good job...

  • I wish all of the songs on Bryter Layter had been recorded differently from the way that they were.

  • That mixing at the end is pure magic...

  • A rare and almost spiritual talent, he adds colour and texture to our ageing baby-boomer world. RIP.

  • Very well said, kindred boomer! (kiss)

  • where was the letter?!??!

  • Surprised the BBC never sold this

or the Omnibus documentaries on the PFloyd..

  • hmm that says a lot about you.

  • i dunno about cunt, but i found it was slightly odd that he felt the need to point out how he smoked the most dope and had the biggest drug problems. nothing wrong with it, just kind of random.

  • he just mentioned it at the side, to my feeling more to point out how they were thinking than and how it later changed by him. He doesnot go into it any further, so it doesnot disturb me.

  • huh?

  • Sorry, this was a reaction at the comment of tracksuitjim. Somehow this came out on top instead underneath his comment.

  • You who are so negative stole the spot light. Nick was a shining star and in my opinion, the people interviewed and were present in his life did nothing to let his light shine. It is obvious by their failure to talk about nothing, but the imperfections in Nick's life. Were you the influence that caused Nick to lack the joy on certain days. The next time you are asked anything about Nick, say more beautiful things of his person, his music, his influence, his character and his life.

  • I had heard Nick Drake's songs in the early seventies but i never knew until a few years ago that Gabrielle (Actress) was his sister. They were obviously close.

  • Riverman is probably my favorite Drake song.

"Betty said she prayed today for the sky to blow away"

    Brilliant lyrics.

  • Song at 5:08??

  • Thanks for posting this. It's really worth seeing in the cinema tho. The slow pace works so much better on a big screen.

  • why arent we allowed to hear the letter??

  • what in the world happened with that edit?

  • it's not cut off on the other vid of the doc - at the end of the 2nd part and the beginning of the 3rd part.

  • aah, never mind...they didnt put up a 3rd part for that stream of the doc. damn.

  • why cut his sister's letters?

  • Question: does Nick's mother, Molly Drake, have a collection of songs out somewhere?

The song I heard during part one sounded amazing.

  • Wow - thank you!

  • I wish I could hear just the vocal and guitar track...lose the string, drums, winds.

  • There is an outtake with just him and guitar. A much better version IMHO.

  • of River Man...

  • clean, intense, stark. that's the drake I love.

  • what's the craic with the letter?...nightmare...

  • It's fascinating with music where some people will hear it as sad, and others will hear it as dreamy plus maybe even optimistic.

I agree with the 2nd half when it comes

    to Nick Drake.

  • she was about to read from the letter and then it cuts to some music?? wierd.

  • Oh..sunshineonsnow...just ignore the ignorant and brash...thank you for this lovely documentary. I know I am grateful! To hell with the rest of the idiots! Well done. :)

  • why is the audio so bad on the skin 2 few?

  • i can't believe it! john wood at work! What i'd do to learn from this man!!! Joe Boyd was the industry bod, but John Wood was the man with the magic box for catching it all in - this song was playing round my head all day...

  • I'm sure his sister is/ was an actress.

  • The music Nick created is so beautiful and haunting. Not many artists have come close to emulating him. The sheer simplicity and concise nature of his playing is unmatched.

Having learnt a bit about him I think that although he indulged in industrial amounts of cannabis, there must have been something that triggered this need to blank out the past. My own personal opinion is that he suffered some kind of abuse or trauma in his childhood and that was the cause of his deep depression.

  • 'Riverman ' is such a devastatingly melancholy song.

  • It is my favorite song of all time. I doubt it will be outdone.

  • god those producers sound like morons. "And this is the drums". . ."and this is all the extra bullshit we layered over his beautiful guitar. . ."

I'm so glad they re-mastered Pink Moon without the orchestral nonsense.

  • pink moon never ever wanted "orchestral" nonsense on pink moon.

he very specificially wanted it to be just guitar and voice.

it's hard for me to believe you're a real drake fan with that kind of tude, brah!

  • well, apparently John Wood was Nick's only supporter when it came to keeping the arrangements simple. And he produced Pink Moon, which is pretty much Nick unaccompanied, as he wanted it. I know what you mean though.

  • I wish these docos had footage of nick, unfortunately there isnt any. Personally i dont really care about hearing his friends or ppl that knew him talk.

  • footage of nick at the end of pt 5

  • The mice ate the video clip too.

  • sorry I accidentally deleted the last comment, but thanks!

  • Thanks for uploading !

As DH Lawrence put it, the English kill off their poets before 40

  • Hey sunshine, I appreciate you taking the time to load this. Letter or no letter. I thank you,

  • thanks, much appreciated!

  • yeh, of course I left that out on purpose just to be stupid and pathetic and just to irritate the viewers of this video!! tool!!

the letter contents are in the stranger among us doc and this doc is now commercially available - so go BUY it!

  • So why exactly DID you leave out the letter contents? It's a bit weird and if you look at the comments below you can see I'm not the only one who thinks that!

  • I didn't leave it out.. the video was like this when I downloaded it, absolutely nothing to do with me.. but it is so nice to be called stupid and pathetic for taking the time and effort to make this available to true nick drake fans! thanks!!

  • Yeah, i'm going to buy it.....with YOUR mommy's credit card!!!

  • wha?? the letter

  • Where did the college letter and making of "Five Leaves Left" go?

  • But you would have saved him, hu? Right.

  • I think CerebalDystrophy has a fair point actually.

  • why does it miss out the letter bit?

  • why does it miss out the letter bit?

  • 7:31 "John did it perfectly" ???

  • Oh, my bad

  • 1988,dopo aver ascoltato per radio in modo accidentale nick, comperai il cofanetto contenente i tre lp.da allora li ascolto regolarmente ed ogni volta ne rimango estasiato.

  • The song is At the Chime of the City Clock off Bryter Layter...one of my favorites. The first Nick Drake song I ever heard.

  • same. reminds me of the summer

  • the song which starts at 7:37...what's the name of the song?it's great

  • "At the Chime of a City Clock" off Bryter Layter.

  • i am an amateur film maker and writer and am writing a screen play on the life a times of nick drake.. anyone that can help or contribute would be greatly appreciated.. thank you..

  • have a read of the biography 'darker than the deepest sea' - highly informative!!!

  • my own experience listening to him I might describe as being 15 with that all encompassing passion you feel for another human...long before the sexuality sets in...just wonderment and appreciation at being in their presence. You learn from virtually every thing that comes out of them. Then the yearning to be near them is born.

Hence...our sense of love comes from that...but much later.

  • That's a beautiful way to put it!

  • so poetic!lol

  • fantastic comment

  • Kinda sexy.

  • Nick Drake haunts me every day because I feel weird like him! ....But I have no talent in music! What a pity ah ah ...I think he was a genius but his family situation did help him a lot (musicians)

  • Why is the letter reading cut out???

  • don't know but I think you can see the whole letter read on the 'stranger among us' documentary

  • yeah! im gonna check out the other second part posted on youtube.

  • a very underated musical genius...

  • I had no idea Dave Pegg of Jethro Tull played with Drake! The studio part is wonderful, perfectly shows the way the music had been built.

  • There is something wrong with the sound at 1:55. His sister starts reading a letter and it is replaced by 'the riverman' almost emediatly

  • I know. Something's fucked up.
