Hi Jack, after twenty odd years of stabbing chords on keyboards, I am trying to truly play piano and this piece is one of my challenges. Absolutely brilliant performance. Bravo!!
Always found this a piece where you just let yourself feel it more, than stay fixed to the notes. It felt a little too studied and stuff, just gotta let yourself be a bit rougher with it methinks, let the Jazz style of the song shine thru more.
Well played, but yeah, not how I would play it myself, but I'm a loose cannon Jazz Pianist, so yeah
When you play, turn it up loud and feeeel the music, feel the vibrations through your fingers and heart, start tapping your foot and you'll get the beat. Blast the neighbours out of their seats! Woo :)
hey thats really cool if i could play the piano that would be the tune i would want to learn damned tube haters cut the guy some slack he tried his best and in my opinion his best did the job would like to see you guys do better ??
Nicely played but you need to be less staccato and your stricter with the timing. Relax a little and have a listen to the original recording as much as you can. There's also a version on Youtube played by Billy himself although it contains far more improv than your piece and it's also accompanied so not ideal for learning.
i used to have a piano cover, i think by oscar peterson, which started straight from the sheet music and built to an incredible climax. i can't find the source. does this ring a bell?
Thanks I learned classically and tried to learn this peice but stopped on page 2 when that jazzy bit came in.Teacher didnt show me yur slide tech. 4 the grace notes I used flick I could not do and it came out like a quaver.
Yes those "incidentals" (or whatever you call them) are done by using one finger and sliding it from the black note on to the white note, rather than using two different fingers.
Hmmm, timing? Sorry, but I got the impression you didn't really enjoy playing the tune - threw away the ending like the keyboard was hot to the touch...
i like the fact that a lot of people are playing this song, and that billy taylor is being acknowledged for his great music. However, I personally think his music should never be played in a "classical" if i may call it so, manner. Put some of your own chord voicings in, experiment with different runs he does. I guarantee you will love it a lot more.
At first, I thought "Hmm, this is pretty average" but then I realised how much harder your version is to mine.

Pretty good, but a bit clinical, throw the music away and play with SOUL, cos you are talented.

I'm learning the jazz version of this at the moment, and I can't for the life of me think of a good improv part. Siiigh.
Good work though :)
