@pie189 The Doctor explains it in Runaway Bride. The TARDIS creates sort of an energy field to keep them safe and breathing. Kind of like how it translates languages so that ever alien/human/creature in the universe speaks British flavored English.

@tuseroni Sorry for me being pedantic but it's actually only 47 years from when the Doctor said it (48 now) as the TARDIS Chameleon Circuit stopped working in the first episode (An Unearthly Child) on 23rd November 1963. You first see the TARDIS as a police box in a junkyard and when they go off to the cavemen story, (100,000BC) they get out of the TARDIS after landing and realize that it's still a police box, and it hasn't blended in with its new surroundings.

Actually, as explained in the episode 'Blink' the police box is never quite accurate. It looks like one, but its slightly the wrong shape, the windows are too high/wrong size etc etc.

That and the fact that nothing short of a fully fledged
