...Just look at the young audience, all sitting on the floor, legs crossed and crammed into one another. Was this at a school or something?? I should think so, since I hate the idea of going to such a concert and be sat on the floor with everyone else, I'd rather be stood up and dancing... Yet you'd only be able to do Irish dancing to music like this, so I'd try my best not to kick anyone's legs!!
There is something very special about this performance. I can't put my finger on it, but it's not just the tremendous playing, it's the atmosphere in the room... as if the audience is aware that they are in the presence of greatness and are hearing something truly awe-inspiring for the first time, but before Planxty had become a big name. All the postings from this performance are among my favourites on YouTube.
this is just about the most wonderfull song i heard, i wonder if anybady has got the chords for this song on guitar, so i could play it for my girlfriend..... if ya i would would be greatfull :D
I've now played this video more than any other on Youtube now, and that's not an exaggeration. This thing makes me want to dance, laugh, cry. It's humbling to watch these musicians create this amazing delirium of music with such intelligence, and watch their faces so concentrated and absorbed...Liam O'Flynn looking positively serene...thank you Planxty, and thanks bilko.
Speaking as a piper who's mostly occupied trying to learn some of his extensive articulation, I longed for such string players many years before Planxty appeared. We used to put up with 4-5 conventional folk music chords by pianos or guitars, which is a serious disservice to the drones and the quick-changing trad melodies. If I had to choose between gaining more of O'Flynn's skills and that kind of accompaniment, it'd be a tough choice.
Any video I see Christy playing bodhran, he is only using his hand. The only video I saw Donal also playing bodhran (Bean Phaidin), he is also only using his hand. They both appear to be tipper-free. :-)
AFAIK, Christy only use the hand and no tipper. Additionally, on this video, he doesn't use his left hand to control the skin, which rather uncommon (and very old style inherited from the 'tambourine').
so you guys seem to be bodhran experts....ever heard of playing with the wing bone of a bird? I'm guessing like a turkey or goose maybe. I've always liked the idea after hearing terry woods sing about it in "the gartloney rats"
Never heard of a wing bone, but bodhrán players that I know use different tippers like a clicking tipper, made of several wooden rods linked together with some tape, of different models of paint brushes of even hair brushes... Sky is the limit...
4 of the best musicians. Liam Og O'Flynn has a knack which not many folk musicians have when they play a medley of tunes, he can fit them all together with an almost invisible link. I'd also love to see what became of the lady's drawing at 1min 36ish!!
Liam Og O'Flynn provided a generation with excellent uileannn piping. He is "at one" with the instrument. I can never find Cunla on you tube. One of the best from Well below the valley album. thanks for posting.

its hard to tell but do these guys (Christy and Donal) usually play the bodhran with just hands? or is there a tipper in there?
cornjuggler 2 years ago
If Liam O'Flynn is playing the pipes, it doesn't matter what's going on with the non melody section.

Oops. Christy was using a tipper in 'The Frost is All Over' video. My bad. ok.. he MOSTLY uses just his hand.
