You guys seem to forget that the Tornado is a high speed low level strike aircraft. Its a ground attack plane and has ground looking radar. The The air defence variant has air searching radar, plus the Tuccano is a very small plane coming from the right almost intercepting from 90 degrees. If you know anything about radars specifically pulse doppler radars then you would know that they have problem seeing aircraft that are sideways to them
Well it would depend on the missile's guidance system. If the Tucano had a radar, the Tornado's passive warning systems would have alerted the pilots that they were being scanned or "painted/ lit up" as they say in the military. Same for a radar guided missile. But an IR guided missile would give no warning to the Tornado and they probably would have gotten shot down. But that possibility is limited because of the Tornado's hi speed tree top level low mode of flying.

It was in A/G Bomb mode. My navigator was checking his radar to find the required landmark, otherwise he migh´ve spotted the incoming Tocano in time. The mission was aborted immediately after this incident, and all pilots involved are grounded, pending the outcome of the investigation.

actually the navigator sat behind the pilot would have the radar, this would show the target on the ground, how far it is etc.. and the navigator would relay that info on to the pilot who would be consentrating on flying the plane following a green dashed/dotted line of the flight path to the tagret on his HUD (head up display), if the pilot had to keep looking at a radar in from of him he probly would of hit the Tuccano!
Both USAF and RAF pilots are superb at what they do, as for many professional pilots the world over. Whatever the circumstance, these things will happen. Still, must get the blood pumping! "Bandits 9 o'clock!" hehe ...

this incident now on the news. why is it lots of aircraft have crashed lately, first the famous hudson river incident, then ANOTHER crash in new york about 4 days after, then a fatal in grob tutors (2 air cadets + 2 instructors killed) then a helicopter down near doncaster, now this!

True, there has been a spate of incidents recently, but with so many millions of flights worldwide every year, I'm suprised we don't have more!!!
