She may have died but she saved him from the life his friend said he was destined for, dying in his own arms. He knows what love is and he's better for it. Able to have a relationship with his daughter and grandson

Of course it was selfish of him...he's a selfish man..his lifestyle proves that. I think the moral is she taught him that being selfish doesn't always work out the way you want it too...The sad thing is you could tell she wanted to say more and he never got the chance to hear it.
i kind of think it was selfish of him to try and "save" her life when she already didn't want to. I know he cares, but he kind of forgot that it's not about what he wants but rather what she wants. i wonder if she'd have chosen the same decision had he asked her first rather than just going to meet the doctor.
