On December 10, 1963 Chuck Yeager took an NF-104A to 108,700 feet.
The current altitude record for a fixed wing, air breathing jet engine aircraft is 123,523 feet...set by Alexandr Fedotov, in a Mikoyan Gurevitch E-266M (MiG-25M)..set on on 31 August 1977.
The highest altitude EVER obtained by a manned, fixed wing aircraft is 367,441 ft set by Brian Binnie in the Scaled Composites "Space-Ship-One" on 4 October 2004...Rocket powered
The USAF and NASA agree that "Space" begins at 265,748 ft.
@geoago in fact i was thinkingh that it was at ver high speed for a normale jjet landing. but it was also a diffivult jet to piloting.dangerous.. high profile for the pilot was necessary
@raptor22stealth My dad was a 104 IP in the 60's. Considered myself pretty fortunate to have grown up to the sounds of J79's. Dad is in his 80's and his eyes light up everytime he talks about flying the Zipper.
@kanehedde LOL, ""G-for Germany"....zis, I am liking"....
"Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters"is the only Hawkwind album I've ever heard, but I thought it was funny as hell. Especially the salesman and the mechanics!
@eprn1n2 No, not much float at all! I thought that first touchdown was kind of shitty, myself...I think everyone thought he was about to crash for a moment!
I love the sound of the J79 though. Does anyone know whether the screech from the J79 in flight has anything to do with that strange howl, or "moose call" when the plane is taxiing or running up? I was just thinking while watching this, I wonder how much of the total noise on landing is from the blown-flaps and how much is just the engine.
@justforever96 No, it's not the flaps, it's a peculiar interaction of airflow with the exhaust pipe. It has been studied! :o) You may find a beautiful explanation and a perfectly working scaled-down simulation at triple W (dot) youtube (dot) com (slash) watch ? v = F1vesxSG1vQ (please remove all spaces)
sicuramente doveva essere molto ecologico!!

Judging by all that black smoke I assume the F-104 and Phantom use the same engine.
