@weightfeather1 John Daly's family was from Boston. He was born in South Africa because his father worked for a U.S. company in Johannesburg as a geologist. After his father died when John was around 12, the family moved back to Boston.
I'm 39 years old, and embarrased to say I had never heard of George Gobel until I "discovered" him on Youtube . The first time I saw him was on a clip of the Johnny Carson show with Dean Martin and Bob Hope, and he absolutely cracked me up. Since then I have seen several clips of him on Youtube, and he never fails to make me smile. I wish I had heard of him sooner than this. I only found out about him 20 years after his death. RIP George. You were one funny guy.
This man was a very down to earth comic. He had a fine reputation of presenting a spotless clean act- in the days of clean acts George Gobel had the nicest & most respectable comedy - like a mid-western farm boy...
which may have led to his eventual fade from the popular culture - Too Clean. too plain ....
I had a good friend who was George's opening act for many years. George was a heavy drinker, and he used to time his off time, between nightly performances, by a mark on his glass.
Lonesome George was one of the classiest comedians of his time and an extremely talented singer in a Broadway play of which many people may not be aware.
Gil Fates discussed Price at length in his book. She came to Fates' attention by letter. (Fates found WML's mail a neck-pain, but it did bring Price to WML.) Since 1938, Price crocheted billiard pockets at home and sold them to the Brunswick-Balke-Collender Company. After this broadcast, Brunswick's competitors complained that she worked for less than minimum wage. The feds at Interstate Commerce, I assume, closed her down. No good deed goes unpunished.
GSN rebroadcast this 20 January 1957 episode on 19 October 2008. The other contestants included the Reverend Bob Richards, an old lady who knitted billard pockets, and a heavy set Air Force Cook. And this.
Let's see comedy TV top this -- George Gobel and Stubby Kaye on the same stage on live TV: the audience must have been entertained within an inch of their lives. Gobel's answer to Kilgallen's question and to Cerf's second question stands as highlights in the whole history of WML. LOLOL! Much thanx for posting this.

@jrb1802uk . That was the greatest group of celebrities. Dean Martin, Bob Hope, george and carson.
Especially his response about the "world being a tuxedo and being a brown shoe"

Is George Gobel's haircut a flattop or a brushcut?
keyringer 2 years ago
@keyringer I've seen it described as a Flattop, like Jan and Dean.

Charlotte Price appeared before Gobel.
