The song might have had something to do with Dolly Parton as many have suggested BUT . . . I remember a Certa Mattress billboard on old route 66 between Chicago & St. Louis (specifically between the towns of Shirley & Funks Grove - SW of Bloomington) That showed quite a lovely young lady in her "nighty" kneeling on a bed. I had always thought that THAT had to be the billboard in the song.
My dad took me to a Beach Boys concert back in 1965 and Del Reeves was one of the many stars performing that night with the Beach Boys. Del was absolutely fabulous that night. This brings back great memorys.
The only #1 song of Del Reeves' career. It hit #1 on the Country & Western chart. It was the 85th #1 C&W song of the Rock Era. This could almost be a borderline pop song.
Dang it! I've been looking for this VERY COOL song since I was a tyke! Yah, I grew up with The Beatles and Stones, but this song.....it' ROCKS. Stands up all these years later....
"The sleepy-headed painter said the girl wasn't real..." Actually the painter was wrong- the girl was real. She was a blonde in her early 20s who was doing some modeling, while she waited to see if she'd get anywhere in country music. After she was chosen to replace Norma Jean on the Porter Wagoner show, and "New Muleskinner Blues" took off, Dolly Parton never had to model for money again.

Another unsung country icon. Franklin Delano Reeves was a nephew of his namesake, the 32nd President of the US. As a child, young Del often 'performed' for his uncle in seclusion at Camp David. He was required to keep these traumatic experiences to himself, to avoid embarrassing the White House.
Later, he considered entering the priesthood, in an attempt to purge himself of guilt. A chance encounter with singer Tex Ritter, at Holy Mother of All Churches in LA, led to a recording contract.
A double clutchin' weasel like me can hardly ever get a girl to look at him thataway, like the girl wearin nuthin but a smile and a towel in the picture on the billboard in the field near the big ol highway..... doodle ooooo doo doooo.
he must have to take a huge breath before he says "the girl waring nothing but but a smile and its out in the picture on the billboard in the field near the big old highway."!
10-4 , Del Reeves and re soverine had good 'ol truck drivin music from when I was a little guy. and dad passed it on to me. THANK GOD! Keep those big wheels turnin headed for parts unknown.Driver.
@ajdoylejr Yeahhhh.....Copy that Driver, come onn, I'll be headed to Chicago next week to bring a load back to Roanoke! Boy I'll tell ya, thars nuthin like a good 'ol truck drivin' tune like this-un. Beats the living hell outta what they call "country music" nowadays. yeah, give me Merle Haggard, Red Sovine, Red Simson, Dave Dudley, Joe Stampley and all them good 'ol singing Truck Drivers anyday!! I'm gone...
You're right, but a few stations have shows which they play classic country, such as Sunday Morning Country Oldies on WKLB. Every Sunday morning when I'm in Massachusetts, the radio stationchange to WKLB driving over the border.

@hankgwe I have a policy regarding the Music Industry: If it makes it into the Top 40, regardless of the charts, then it's a hit.

It is hard to find a station anywhere that plays classic country prior to the 70's! that doesn't fade in and out.
