I don't want to stir things up between codes but watch what you prefer! I prefer Union and it's hard to get over to a league fan why this is the case ... they're 2 different games - I don't want to know about try rates/ball handling skills/physicality etc etc I just like watching Union more than League - maybe it's the retain ball in the tackle thing and uncontested scrums I dislike in League ...dunno just hope the codes don't merge with a worst of everything for both sets of fans
@thecallan008 On average RL forwards do 3X the tackling and 3X the distance run of ru forwards. Union has less than half the number of tries but twice the "strategic" kicks. It appears you strategy does not work. Ask Gareth Thomas what is tougher, If he can remember as he was helped from the pitch on his RL debut semi conscious after 30 mins. As Johnathan Davis said, "It's the first time I have been cold for 7 years. I was never cold playing Rugby League", on returning to kick n clap.
@terrortorn So what rugby league has more tries? Thats why dumb people follow it. They see a few tries and get boners and love the game. Then they watch union and are too dumb to understand it so the call it boring. As for which is tougher who cares? What difference does it make? Which is tougher is based on opinion. I once played RL then switched to Union. Personally I found Union to be harded but thats my opinion.
@thecallan008 Dear oh dear. As with many RU types you confuse complexity with fatally flawed. There is nothing difficult to understand about U. It is predictable, antiquated, unevolved, ego driven and constrained by RL. You have such a barren cupboard your only resort in comparing the two games is to aggrandise the elements in U that RL decided were not worthy of a paying audience and discarded. RU never fails to disappoint.
they are both massive, opinionated, biased and very often wrong on a lot of occasions and are what I hate about both codes! Arrogant rah - Barnsey. Stevo - the down-trodden northerner. I follow both SL and the aviva and they're both good competitions and both class sports.
Mike Stephenson is a self opionionated man and gives the impression he knows Rugby League is a minority sport but tries to shout it loud in the hope that the louder he becomes the more "his" sport will prosper.
Sadly for him he is carrying out a disservice to League in giving the impression that supporters of League express themselves in the same belligerent manner, i am sure they do not.League has a sterotype of flat caps etc that went out years ago, sadly he brings it back
@349quinman Mike Stephenson is a RL World Cup winner although unlike the EngRU WC winners he was not in receipt of a public honour or 39. His "belligerence"? No, his justifiable intolerance for listening to another Union aggrandising, hypocritical diatribe from an ex "amateur" RU player grudgingly acknowledging RL and lacking the stomach or humility to be honest about RU. The only disservice to RL was done by the RU and it's good to see the RU stereotype is still alive and reveling in tedium.
if stevo had just talked about the point at hand it wud hav been a good interview, but hes clearly just gone into this interview trying to prove to everyone that league is better than union. i hav a lot of respect for the both of them but barnes has clearly taken the moral high ground here by not being drawn into an argument which stevo so badly wanted. Why cant he just accept that people will like league because the like it, not because some old man who tries to undermine union tells them too?
@ladricept The question was posed that RL would become a "feeding" code for RU. This requires a robust opposition as it is inferred that Union is superior. Barnes also sticks to the age old RU hypocritic rubbish about professionalism and party line blinkered opinion of RL. The attitude from RU for over 100 years moves any discussion about RL V RU outside mere sporting pleasantries.
I think Eastmond could do OK. He may be a number 7 in League, but he moves a bit like Jason Robinson. It's difficult to say because he is small and he will be going into contact against much bigger players than in league, but guys like Shane Williams and, of course, Robinson, show that a small player with a good step and a bit of a brain can still do well. We'll see.....
Steve-O, watch this back and tell me you're not embarrassed. Barnes is concisely trying to put his points across and you are constantly wading in repeating yourself and sounding like the village idiot. I'm sure the presenter was trying get opinion on cross-code matters......unbelievable!!!
Referring to union as chess and league as draughts is a none too thinly veiled stab at league. The last resort for many union supporters is to play the " it a thinking mans game" card. Well such arguments lack credibility when you see any game. The reason you have so few tries is a lack of tactical ability and over reliance on basic play. Your world cup wont lack for hyperbole from commentators reveling in average skills surpassed easily by any super league team.
league is far better then union, union is get it kick it league is tactical and about running the ball. union is only better because its from made down south and south always beats the north and its not fair union is all about money and kicking league is about skill and running with the ball, the crowds are smaller in league because it isnt well know in england and only played up north were the majority of people would like to watch football instead
@ChingWhonPow It might be about money now, but for 100 years it was league that was all about money. Welsh rugby was single handedly destroyed by the money in league. Also there's a lot of skill in rucking, scrummaging as well as the back moves that league is made of. Both games are different, each to their own.
how is league a tougher game? running straight at the opposition and getting tackled couple of times a game is nowhere near as tough as hitting ruck after ruck, maul after maul getting stamped on by massive 18 stone blokes every minute of the game almost.
Leage is the much better game. Union only beats league on the international game, club level our game is much better, The NRL is the best competition in the world, best skill levels, most intense games and beast coaches!
The current Australian Rugby Union captain Rocky Elsom couldnt get get even play reserve team rugby league for Canterbury Bulldogs as he was seen to be not good enough!
@kobashi100 to be fair i think rocky elsom's developed quite a bit since his days struggling in league, i think he'd get in the bulldogs squad these days for sure
As someone who switched from Union to League, I can say that both codes are immense to play. League has that added physicality that you arguably can't get in Union, were as Union arguably has the added attacking flow that you can't really get in League. To be a really great player I think you need a knowledge of both codes, Stevo's right about Robinson and Ashton, both converts and both took to union really well. I personally think its made me better in all aspects, especially defensively.
as a neutral i prefer league massively over union. used to watch NRL back in the day, its unreal, try to watch union but all that bollocks with the scrums that take about 5 minutes to come about and all the kicking into touch.....not for me
in new zealand rugby union is faster than league. we find league very boring and stop start everytime someone is tackle. the main different is that contesting for the ball in rugby that gives that extra exciting to it.
dont question each football codes. americans love gridion, australians love aussie rules, irish love gaelic football, kiwis and the pacific islands love rugby and the world love soccer.
@JoeRUGBY10 robinson recieved two things from ru firstly a larger pay packet thanks to international games and a different accent probably thanks to media gurus. as for his kicking. you ru fans must understand that to hack the ball into the crowd is not considered a skill in league but to run 50 yards from a standing start beating all opponents and then scoring under the posts. well robinson certainly did not learn that from any rugby union training ground.
So it is on that point I question why Rugby Union is more popular on an international stage that league? The club competition is about the same in terms of attendances, league's average is slightly better and it gets more viewing figures on Sky, but the international and general global popularity of Union in comparison to league baffles me. I think part of it is the two governing bodys of each code and other more political factors like social class, which in sport is very disappointing,
I can't comprehend how someone can tell me why the 'game' of Rugby Union is better than that of Rugby League. Stuart Barnes questions do you want a game that is played at a lightening pace for 80 mintutes or a game that shifts in its terms of pace - surely people want a lightening paced game? It's exciting, unpredictable, entertaining - hell THAT Chris Ashton try is something we see all the time in League. To quote Stuart Barnes, "there's more pure dynamism in league"
Rugby Union is basically the unrefined, poorly skilled, over hyped, pedestrian version of League.
