Sammy White to the rescue. I always said, even though I was only 11 at the time, that his recovery of Miller's fumble was HUGE. They still probably would have won the game, as it turned out. But maybe not. Just one more example of bad luck for the rams again in the 70's. Or another example of why they were really really good but not great enough in that era.
@6400az: The Viking/Redskin game of 1975 will go down as one of the most exciting games in NFL history; played before a packed house at RFK, and a national CBS television audience ( the late game-always the better one), a great start by the Skins, a tremendous comeback by the Vikes, and a blocked FG to preserve a Skins win; Vikes didn't need the game, but played to the hilt anyway, and George Allen was desperate..
I have the abbreviated highlights, but I would love to have the whole game..
That was a great game alright. The lead changed several times at the very end. I was enraged with Cox's performance. I also have highlights, don't think that game is out ther in full broadcast.
@6400az--great 1975 game between Vikes/Redskins, with Vikes overcoming a 21-0 deficit, but losing 31-3 to a desperate Redskin team; Vikes already clinched the division, but still made a comeback..
That game told me more about the Vikings of 75' than many of their wins.
They lost because of Fred Cox. Missed the extra point that would have put them up 24-21. Eventually, it cost them the game. Also missed short FG and then had the last one blocked.
Closely followed his career since the 70' playoff loss to the 49ers....he could'nt kick !!
Both Page and Ed White were let go/traded during the '78 season; it' sometimes forgotten that White held out during a portion of the '77 season, and I'm sure that Viking mgmt didn't forget that..
Vikes threw more and more passes to their backs in 77-78, as their offensive line beacme old and more suited to pass blocking; lots of "off-tackle passes" to Foreman and Ricky Young..
Page was placed on "irrevocable waivers". That's how it was in the Miami Herald back in 78'. I simpley could'nt believe the Vikings/Grant did that It was because of an incident on a MNF game. Page was taken out on short yardage, then when asked ot return, he refused to go back into the game.
Ed White was traded for Rickey Young, that started Foremans' decline, along with his weight gain.
77 Vikes just fortunate to be there; they won the Central by a toenail ( tiebreaker), and Lady Luck followed them with a monsoon in Los Angeles..
75 Vikings--who knows? They had a very, very easy schedule, and they played pretty poorly against the Cowboys in the first round; I tend to think that their easy schedule didn't prepare them properly for the playoffs..
The 77' Vikings where a sinking ship AND rapidly taking in water.I really can't decide wich was their greatest victory, but "The Mud Bowl" has to rank up there.
In 75' they where 1-2 against teams without losing records. Even though I do'nt think they where AS good as some may say. You gotta handed to them in the Redskins game in week 11.They did lose, but they came back to take the lead after being down 21-0.Cox missed a PAT and 2 FG. One missed one blocked.
What happened to Chuck Foreman? From 1973-1977 that dude was one of the best RB's in the entire league. Probably the best in The NFC. He just kind of disappeared after 1978.
After 77' the Vikings traded a disgruntled Ed White to the Chargers for Rickey Young. Their running game( Foreman) suffered greatly because of the absence of White.Young set a record for RB receptions in 78' with 88 catches.Suddenly, Foreman was no longer the main guy.Why they threw to Young instead of Foreman I'll never know.In 79' Foreman entered training camp weighing 230,he claimed he wanted to be stronger, but now he'd lost his quickness and moves + he was never that fast.
@6400az Thanks man. I always wondered what happened to him. HE was awesome! ROY in 1973, led the league in TD's in 1975 with 22, and ran for over 1,000 yards 3 years in a row from 1975-1977.
It is hard to believe the longest run in his career was only 51 yards though.
I'm not old enough to remember him playing but when I watch old games like this, I love his style. Love the 70s Viking teams, even though I'm a Giants fan. Would've loved for them to have one one of their Super Bowls.
Sure, your welcome. At one point in the mid 70's, Foreman had to have been the best player in the entire league. Been watching ball for over 40 years. Never once, seen anything like him.......before or after.
The 51 yard run you mention, I think was in 77' against Atlanta, but he did have a 62 yarder against the Rams in the 76' NFC Chapaionsihip Game. Most of his runs where in the medium range. He would wind, twist, weave & slither in a way that shocked all who witnessed them.
@6400az Yeah, one move I know Foreman loved was that spin move. I don't know how he didn't get dizzy lol. I have all of The Vikings Super Bowls on DVD's but Foreman was never a factor in any of those games, so I like watching this one, where he had a good game, because I know the guy was awesome, but I don't have any games where he played well.
Think he had like 10 yards against The Steelers (although he caught 5 passes fpr 50 yards) and he only had 44 against The Raiders.
@GialloHorror I can only watch SB IV.I figure eneugh time has gone by where I can somehow detatch myself from it. I know it's pretty stupid, but the other three I just can't ( or won't ) watch them.
I have several Vikings videos and original game broadcast, but the Vikings win them all !My particular favorite is against the Steelers on MNF 1976. Foreman absolutely tore them apart, had 148 yrds rushing. Most runs where nothing short of spectacular.
@6400az That is awesome! I remember that MNF game against Pittsburgh. I was 10 years old, and we won 17-6 I think, without Francis!!! I always wish I could watch the NFC Championship game that year against LA....what a game! And the 1973 playoff game against Washington....I'm barely old enough to remember much from it but I do recall it was a great game. And Fran to Gilliam in the 3rd quarter busted it open.
Thanks. I also remember all those games you mention. The 76' NFC Championship Game is truly a phenomenal game that somehow never got much acclaim. The original broadcast is available, but only the 2 half and the post game. It is one of the greatest of all Vikings victories. You must watch this video sometime. Both playoff victories in 73' where also euphoric, the Redskins really gave the Viking trouble until Eller told Gilliam to " shake it off ".
@6400az It's not stupid at all man. hey, I'm a Giants fan. I've been spoiled. I'ev seen them win 4 championships since 1986, and I was 10 in 1986, so it's not like I had to suffer through the dark days of the 70's, but I still refuse to watch them get destroyed by The Ravens. That game pisses me off to this day, so I can imagine how you feel. I was pulling for The Vikes in 1998, and couldn't believe Gary Anderson, of all people, missed a chip shot. 2009, Favre, don't get me started
Haha... Thanks.Followed the Vikings since late 1969.On Jan 11,1970 I turned 9. Guess what the Vikings did that day ??
For many hardcore football fans, their greatest memories are established a very young age, like mines or yours ( man are you lucky with the Giants).
In my case, the weekly highlite shows, played to the back drop of NFL Films music, where the high point of my exsitence at the time. Yep, I loved it that much. I'll take these memories to my grave.
@6400az Yeah, great birthday gift lol. A Super Bowl loss to The Chiefs in SB IV.
Yeah some of my earliest memories include Phil McKonkey lol. I used to love that guy. He and Mark Bavaro. Of course L.T breaking Theismann's leg will always stick out (no pun intended). I am lucky that my father, and grandfather, were Yankees/Giants fans. Could've been Mets/Jets and I'd be screwed LOL!
I remember The Mets winning in 1986 I was jealous LOL!
Great gift, yea. I'm always in a foul mood during or around my birthday lol.
I live in Miami, and at the time the Dolphins where the rage. Everyone in my family/ at school loved the Dolphins and they'd all try and convince me to root for them. Nope,my where te Vikings, never did I say..screw this all they do is lose big games....maybe I should have.
I remember the Giants of the 80's, Bavaro and McKonkey ,Joe Morris and later Otis Anderson. Really hardnose players.
@6400az Oh man, living in Miami, had to be tough after SB VIII. Out of all the Super Bowls they were in, that was the one where I really thought they were just outmatched. I thought The Dolphins really outplayed them. The other 3 games, turnovers killed them.
What was the hardest loss for you? Was it a Super Bowl? Or was it that 1998 loss to The Falcons? I really thought they would win it all in 1998. One of my best friends, when I was a kid was a Vikings fan. He loved Herschel Walker.
It was ridicuolus I tell you. Family and friends would call to offer me condolences, I'm serious, but LOL!!
They did'nt have a chance against the Dolphins. Only two 1st down in the 1st half, Csonka was bullying them.
The SB losses where all horrible, but IV I was just 8 and could barley speake English, had only been a fan since Oct. of 69'. However, when I see it in NFL Films, it is beyond disturbing. It was an epic team, Chiefs where good, but Vikings played horrible.
The worst SB had to HAD to be IX. NFL Films show the scene at the end.Very, very sad.Marshall,,,Forman on the sidelines, the Vikings bench cold and drenched. As sad a scene as one can see.SB XI,I knew that was it, the Vikings where as, if not older than my parents! In both cases,I thought they would win.In SB IX, they where the experienced team, the Steelers 1st SB. In XI, they where on fire at the end of 76',that did'nt help.
For a 15 yr old, it was nothing short of total disillusion.
@6400az I think it's a shame that they didn't win one because they were a GREAT team. I mean, they went to 4 Super Bowls in 8 years. They were the 1st team to reach 4 Super Bowls, but they get no respect because they never won it all.
When I watch NFL Films highlights of SB XI, my heart always goes out to Chuck Foreman, who is crying on the sideline. You can see it during the game too.
I think he knew that XI was their last, real shot, although in 1977 they made The NFC Championship game
@6400az What did you think of the 1975 Vikings? I've heard that was their best team of that era, but of course, they got robbed by the refs against Dallas when Pearson CLEARLY pushes Wright to the ground to catch the ball.
Do you think they could've beaten The Steelers in 1975? I know they would've beaten The Rams. They OWNED The Rams
I e-mailed you personally, don't know if it went through . Had to much to say about the 75' team............. I just don't think they where the real thing.
Scully made a lot of mistakes calling this game. Another one I remember was him calling the Vikings' offense, the defense, after our first fumble that the the offense recovered.
The Rams beat Dallas in 76 and 79 at Dallas. They lost at home to the Cowboys in 1978. Two of the better NFC teams during the 70's, along with Minnesota.
Dallas was one of the best teams of all time in 1977. They led the league in total offense AND total defense... a monster year for them. Neither the Rams or Vikings were going to beat them. But, the Rams were usually a competitive matchup for the Cowboys. Dallas beat the Rams the next year AT L.A. in the NFC title game.
The Rams did beat Dallas in 76' playoff @ Dallas, but other than that the Cowboys had their number right. Routed them in a couple of NFC Championship games.........73' 1st round playoffs aslo.
Chuck Foreman scores, stands up and Ahmad Rashad claps his hands and then shakes Foreman's hand.....How stoic the NFL was then to "The Look At Me" attitude of today.
Hawkins credits the fumble recovery as only the 13th the Vikings defense has had all year, when the Minnesota offense is driving to score. Then, after the kickoff, Scully credits Chuck Foreman for gaining a first down on third, when it is Lawrence McCutcheon running for the Rams on third down. Maybe the weather threw the announcers off as well.
The Rams beat this same Vikes team, 35-3 on Monday night earlier in the year. I'm not sure they would have beat the Cowboys, but it would have been like their usual playoff wars in 76 and 79. Both Ram wins, but could have gone either way.
