@magiclapras olivia is British love, she was born in the uk,left when she was 5,she only stayed in Australia for 10 years then she come back to England, stayed here till she sang for her Country the uk,then she moved to the usa, thats where she called home,i wouldn't call her a Australian,if you where a fan you would of knew this,to us she is british we go by where she was born,a true brit fan,
@4piglite :It seems the people have made a few lousy choices-Kathy Kirby 1965 could have had a better tune.Lulu got boom bang a bang a bang a bang and it was here sheer ham ability and her singing ole at the end of the song that said cop that you spaniards and she came out tops.On the subject of Olivia,You are so right about this song being a just going down the road tune, yet if you listen, she really did her best.Note it didnt kill her career! She kept going.A woman of talent and character.
Do I recognise Olivia's backup singers as "the ladybirds" from "the Benny Hill Show" ? I think they also sung backup on that classic song "Ernie, And he drove the fastest milk cart in the west."
@BEYONDTHEPALE1 - yes, The Ladybirds are on one microphone. They were indeed the backing singers on Benny Hill's smash "Ernie" and on many TV variety series. I think the other two singers in this clip may be Irene and Doreen Chanter, who had a minor hit with "Sideshow".
Fourth in the contest, it did fourth best in the UK charts, reaching no 11. I See A Star and Go (Si in Italian) both reached no 8, and of course Waterloo got to no 1. In terms of the UK charts, this was the best ever Eurovision song contest.
According to Wikipedia, the Nobel-prize winning physicist Max Born was the father of Olivia's mother Irene, not Olivia's father. In physics circles, this makes her royalty.
She is also royalty in musical circles, or a goddess, depending on your views on these matters.
I don't like the song, it's some old schmaltz, but the Austrian narrator, the decor at The Dome i Brighton, United Kingdom and the picture quality are first class. The BBC produced it, but this is the ORF (Österreichischer Rundfunk) transmission. Olivia Newton-John's dress is also very colourful.
She's really quite amazing :) to stand there in a long flowy dress without moving a step the entire song STILL maintaining this fabulous energy and presence takes skill
we keep hearing artists moan about their euro song, easy, dont sing it,shamefull they now think they are better than they are,its a part of musical history, the ESC has a lot of history, and memories, now its time it just said goodnight, because its worthless, latvia vote for ukraine, sweden vote finland etc etc
Born in England, moved to Australia when she was 6, her father was a British war hero, an MI5 officer on the Enigma project at Bletchley Park. He took Rudolph Hess into custody during World War II.
@jamaila123 I remember the spanish tv commentator said she was "photogenic". I was only 9 years old but I understood perfectly he meant her eyes were so beautiful and her smile so perfect....Of course Abba won that year because they had the best song (and the best voice: lovely Agnetha), but no doubt who had the prettiest face.
@klausgeorg01 Why did you remove your kind reply? In any case, thank you for the information. Voices are very, very important. Even though I do not really speak German, though I try to fake it, I can understand every word of what he is saying. You know are listening to a professional narrator here!
I removed it because I made a mistake;-) : There is only a dutch version of the ending in 1994, but the voting procedure is from ORF (Austria). So I tried to post it again, but obviously it failed... Yes, I think it would be great if there still were some speakers like him in modern TV. I especially miss the announcers of the programm, who were common in Germany and Austria until the early 2000s....
I love Abba but i also love this song too and great to see what our entry was like in 74!! although she looks like she's in a nighty your gran would wear!!! lol !!!
Mijiiiitaaaaa!!!!Gracias a dios te fuiste a Norteamerica a hacer "Grease" 03 años despues, porque de no ser asi, minimo estuvieras en los mongolicos "Teletubies"!!!!Que horror!!!!
Olivia did not loose because of her looks to the "two ABBA women" she lost because LLL was not good enough. No wonder ONJ loathes the song. I bet she never sang it since '74.
Olivia is really cute, but she got steamrollered by the 2 ABBA women. They were just beautiful, and had a much better song to sing. Olivia has had a great career and has been wonderful to watch. Thanks for posting.
@pinheadq41 steamrolled?? um, frida had an afro there and was always called the "ugly one" in abba. i think both olivia and agnetha were the best looking women in the 70's. olivia went on even to this day as looking amazing compared to the abba girls now adays she steamrolls them.
@MrEurocat I would actually say that OLIVIA is the classic! She became much more than just that song ... Like Abba became more than Waterloo or Céline more than "Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi" ...
Why people don't understand that she did not choose the song or the dress, the english public voted on it..( Actually , she hated the song).I would have prefered if she wore the outfit at the rehearsals...
If I remember correctly, Livvy had already agreed to be the UK entry, with the BBC viewers voting which song she sang after a Saturday evening show showcasing several songs. "Long Live Love" won the popular vote, but I remember sending off my postcard for Hands Across The Sea, which I still believe was the better song. Then again, competing against ABBA, noone had a chance, as they were (and are still) brilliant.,
We put some great songs in during the early 70's, but this is awful, one of our worst ever - I can see why ONJ hated it. Sounds like something kids sing at infant school.
I prefer the simpler style of Eurovision from those days. A song would live or die because of the writer and performer as would the show itself. Countries spend spend spend to outdo each other these days and although the shows are more of a spectacle, they're getting as ludicrous as the Olympics opening ceremony etc. I must be getting old.
She was born in England but her family emigrated to Australia when she was 6. She returned to England when she was 17 or 18 after winning a talent contest on Australian TV: the prize was a trip to England.
I missed that song at the LIVE broadcast as well as ABBA because I went away after a while because I never heart about them. Since 1975/76 I am a fan of Olivia and since 1973 of Björn, Benny, Anna & Frida (ABBA).
I love Olivia, if only for the fact she's Australian. But she does have good songs, Xanadu for example.

UK viewers choose this song and the dress mix, and Olivia did her duty.
Though she like "Angel Eyes", the personal favor coundn't change the decision.
ABBA won, but she didn't blame on them.
When ABBA came for US TV promotion in 1978, Olivia warmly welcome them. That's the most sucessful program they did in US.

An Aussie was performing the UK entry in 1974 because ONJ was born in Cambridge and moved to Oz with her folks when she was 4.
Shame the UK could never get the Bee Gees to enter as we would have won every year.
EnglishMFrankfurt 1 year ago
The song is crap. ONJ does as good a job as anyone could with it I suppose, but Waterloo is superior song and deserved to win.
I could never figure out why an Aussie was performing the UK entry anyway. Oh, well.
