@xArabianxBeastx Actually you are wrong. The makedonian kingdom lasted from around 474 B.C. to 178 B.C. Rome as an empire (monarchy) lasted from 31 B.C. to 414 A.D. Also the Romans lost a number of battles. Rome was even sacked by Gauls in the late 4th century B.C.

Actually Alexander's empire is why and how the "hellenistic period" was created. The hellenistic period resulted in the safekeeping of greek manuscripts in the persian language and the arabic language later on. Those translations centuries later returned in Europe and gave birth to rennaissance and essentially to the modern western civilization

He didn't do anything really. Macedonia isn't considered a great land anymore. It has little to do with history after that empire... @xArabianxBeastx Actually you are wrong. The makedonian kingdom lasted from around 474 B.C. to 178 B.C. Rome as an empire (monarchy) lasted from 31 B.C. to 414 A.D. Also the Romans lost a number of battles. Rome was even sacked by Gauls in the late 4th century B.C.

@fraoula No, Rome as an empire started with Julius Caesar / Augustus in about 49 BCE. Not 31 (18 year difference) and Macedonia ended in about 195 BCE. Rome and Macedonia as empires lasted about the same duration, however Macedonia had little to no contributions to the modern world.

Caesar although having dreamt of that never actually did it as he still allowed the senate to pass and execute laws. Also due to makedonian conquests (alexander, ptolemy, seleukus) modern day turkey, syria, israel, iraq (up to the parthians) egypt and lybia flourished.

They just encouraged trade, farming, slave trading and other lucrative expeditions that helped the indigenous populations to achieve better life standards (apart from the slaves of course). Many great cities ( Alexandreia , antioch, pergamus, attaleia) and "wonders" pharus of alex. alex. libary were built at that time. Did you also know that it was Ptolemy 2nd who imported camels to egypt?

Like the other person said he could always adapt to any battle and think up new ways to win it. Also he was not a coward like most generals in history, he lead from the front every time and was the first to hit the enemy line. He also spread Greek culture as far as India so I think he did a fair bit.

@sparghast Okay, let's be realistic here. Alexander lead on empire. That's it. Sure he was intellectual, but how was he the greatest man in history. To be a great man you have to have left a huge print, Alexander didn't do that. To be honest actually, hes nothing compared to others who could easily go for that title. E.g. Octavian and Julius Caesar, Muhammad (sws), Jesus (sws), Ghandi ect.

Actually Alexander's empire is why and how the "hellenistic period" was created. The hellenistic period resulted in the safekeeping of greek manuscripts in the persian language and the arabic language later on. Those translations centuries later returned in Europe and gave birth to rennaissance and essentially to the modern western civilization
