  • I suppose the thought was: "roas will be the most identfiable character for most players. Lets make him vulnerable and hence easier for them to project themselves onto." Unlike a book, video games are half situational fantasy, half power fantasy. I do not want to feel less capable then my mom and little sister in an underground monster maze. Alternatively, maybe they wanted to create a jack of all trades, but in a game that is all about specialization, this creates only a master of suck.

  • my favorite character is the dog loaf

  • I beat this game back in the day, it was really hard till you got the sword to kill the dragon. dragon is like a one shot kill if I'm remembering right

  • @shinitaru You remember it wrong!

  • @DeceasedCrab entirely possible, it was 25ish years ago, but even still I know that the dragon was an easy kill, at least is was for me

  • AHHH!!! Broderbund!!! No!!!

  • I cannot believe all of the DC Let's Plays that I have never seen before. How'd I ever miss these?

  • @BanditoWalrusGames Through the magic of having a life!

  • @hwnzero that makes two of us!

  • Grandma has a huge red beard!! What the heck?! Man, this game never made sense to me, and now it makes less sense than ever.

  • Aww man this brings back so many childhood memories! Never did beat it.

  • Do you ever grind money and stuff in games? I seem to like doing it..... As in when I played this game I specifically went to Poochy and grinded money!

  • I doubt it, but I wonder if The Guardian Legend passwords would work on this (I also noticed this is the second NES game I know that br0derbund published in america that had 32 character passwords). Yeah, never mind. TGL's password system is actually even more complicated (TGL has upper case, lower case, numbers, and punctuation marks. Where as LOTW only has uppercase and numbers).

  • I had the passwords to this written on the inside lid of my toybox

  • Man. I hated the HELL out of this game when I was a kid. It was prior to the internet and GameFAQs and thus I had no fucking clue what was going on. All I ever did was get lost a bunch. xD

  • Wow, it's amazing that you did this game. Never thought I'd see a Dragon Slayer 4 Let's Play. Good on ya. :)

  • Hahah, I remember this game. Great stuff. I always played the little girl in a dress, for laughs.

  • Holy crap! I remember playing this game a few times... I want to say I rented it from the movie store a LOOONG time ago... I loved it, but never got too far...

  • I had this game when I was a kid it was way to hard for me to figure out what to do. Having to use all the different characters, at one point I had a faq of sorts but it was either wrong at some point or I couldn't figure out how to get where they were talking about and thats where I gave up.

  • Dood, DC. I just saw your Goonies ][ walktrhough... First one of yours I saw... I was inspired to look for this game, and I must say that I'm glad that you're the one that's doing it! Keep up the fun "let's play" sets coming!

  • I didn't know that this game HAD bosses.

  • @WandererFromYs - Going by your screen name, I'd say it's because Falcom made the game ~ the same company that made Ys.

  • woah! I was just looking up things about this game when I saw this video. I thought " whos the punk thats let's playing this game?" I take that back know. And this game does have good music.

  • Hope you enjoy the videos.

  • I tried returning to the ground in dungeon 1, I was confused.

  • Ok, This is the second nes game I have ever played. The first obviously being Super Mario. But, I have forgot the name of this game until recently when I went looking through ever nes game on the internet. All I had in my memory was the music in the intro, the character selection screen, and the tree in the beginning. I am so excited to finally see a playthrough of this super old game that brings a million memories...

  • And it sure as hell beats trying to play through it yourself! This game. Oh god.

  • @odetofall1 Wow, I was exactly the same as you.

  • never beat it. why dont they make games this challenging anymore???

  • Why don't they make games this challenging anymore, Dephiler? Because, around the time the PS1 came out, the target audience shifted into the more casual crowd and video games started to become marketed more and more towards casual people who simply don't have the patience, dedication, and appreciation for that Old School type difficulty.

You can still find games like this, if you look hard enough, but the "Old School" audience simply isn't nearly as profitable as the "Casual" audience is.

  • This game was fucking impossible.

  • Wow nostalgia. This was one of the few NES games I had as a kid.

  • Great intro, I am impressed by how thorough you were with your description of the characters and items.

When I saw you pick Roas first I was like: "Yeah, the worst, easily" only used at the end basically.

I played Legacy of the Wizard, got some crowns but never finished it . I didn't care to try again because of the massive time and effort required to get far into the game WITHOUT using a guide.

Man, it was horrible.Anyway, great LP man, I am going to watch it all tonight to see how you do it

  • the grandma has a bigger beard than then the dad

  • the dog looks like the bubble bobble dragon

  • You see what happens when you have individual thought on Youtube? You get THUMBED DOWN.

    SUFFER FOR YOUR FREEDOM.

  • This game has amazing music. Game is very hard.

  • I used to play this all the time. It was so hard.

  • This is one of my absolute favorite games, I had it as a kid and could never beat it; it's hard as hell. Ten years later, i'm trying to beat it again.

I'm going to wait till I beat it before I watch these youtubes.

(The only reason people hate this game is because they can't beat it...)

  • I'd be interested to see what a modern game company would do with this concept as a remake... as long as that company wasn't Bethesda. I don't want a very pretty game that crashes all the time. :-)

  • just because a game is hard doesn't mean it's bad. Battletoads is a classic example, great in every way but so hard you'll want to grind your teeth into a fine powder in rage

  • According to GI, the worst part of the game is the Turbo Tunnels

  • Why give this guy thumbs down.

    Freedom of thought not allowed?

  • This game drove me nuts but I loved trying haha. Man oh man. Love it. When I found the walk through in a magazine I was ECSTATIC! haha A pleasure to watch this. Thanks for doing this.

  • Picked this game back, last time I played it I probably couldn't even read yet, eh i'm giving it a shot.

  • I loved this game so much but it pissed me off when I couldn't beat it. I can't believe I was 5 the last time I played this. Maybe I should give it another shot too.

  • Great game. I totally misunderstood it at first but it turns awesome later on.

I remember an old N Power counselor bio that says he beat it in 38 minutes. NOW THAT'S AN EFFING LIE.

  • POACHY POACHY P O A C H Y THAT SPELLS poachy

  • I never knew how to play this game, never had a manual. But I loved it anyway. Particularly the music. :D Fond memories!

  • Memories... this is a game even as of today I cannot forget. The game is hard as can be but fun.

  • NEVER understood this game

  • I used to LOVE this game!!!!! Did they make it for Nintendo DS?

  • Classic. This took me some time to conquer. I loved the music. I've one this from start to finish twice. Well worth it.

  • this was my FAVORITE game as a kid..haha

  • I remember this game. Excelent music, but too long, too complicated and I never liked the based-on-magic-meter attack system. Also, we had no idea where to get a password (we were too young) and had no instruction booklet (it was a cousin's).

  • This guys voice is just excellent for a narrative overview of this game. He is so right about everything about this game.

  • I remember playing this game when I was only 6 years old with my cousin coming from Mississippi playing it on my NES...

  • yeah like everyone else in the world i couldn't beat this game,i made a promise to my self, that when i got older, i would beat this darn game! i have the nes, and now even better i have LET'S PLAY! thanx soo much.

  • Thanks for doing this, this is way better than trying to figure out the game

  • I once got decently far... I never realized you had to switch characters to progress because the high jump girl always seemed the best

  • I love th e music on it to but I can't remember how to free that damn dragon I used to go right thru this game when I was young.

  • Are you or anyone else planning on LPing Dragon slayer 1-3?

  • Will you be LPing Mystery Quest? I never could figure out what to do in that game.

  • I remember playing this, I got like, lost and stuff, didn't know wtf I was doing, but its still cool, especially since you can play as the pet.

  • omg, I remember this game. My best friend had it and I'd watch her play for hours but never really getting anywhere. It'll be nice to see how it ends, finally.

  • I played this a lot and could never beat it, the furthest I got was getting 2... crowns I think. That is to say, beating 2 bosses.

I can't believe I didn't finish it, I am going to download it and beat it before I watch the rest of these videos. Thanks for refreshing my memory.

  • When my mom used to play video games (before my dad told her it was stupid of her to play video games), this was her favourite. She almost beat it too...then my dad fucked up the game. XD

  • This game is stupid hard; it frusturated me to absolutely no end as a kid (although I probably poured twenty to thirty hours into it) and I've still never managed to get more than two of the four treasures before I have to resort to cheating.

  • i still ahev this game too...its awesome

  • Pochi looks like Kirby on cocaine...

  • he looks like a Dig-Dug monster..

  • he looks like bub or bob from the bubble-bobble and bust-a-move series', lol, don't ask how I know that, I used to love bust-a-move XD

  • Love yer stuff, looking forward to watching this, but just for the sake of being a giant fruitbag I think it's pronounced "Dra-slay" family, not "Drazzle" family. Pun on the japanese series title.

  • I'm probably the only one that hated this game, but back in the day I didn't like Metroid either. I got so frustrated and lost in them from the lack of maps (Zelda had one, thank god), and I didn't understand how to save or where to go next..

So down.. down I went.. Deeper into the dungeon.. Getting hurt and running out of ammo.. And turning off the game and putting it away..

  • I still have this game...

  • You did this! I love this game. ^_^

I actually did beat this... and how glorious it was when I did. I don't think I'll ever be able to repeat it.

  • Ohh I'm so going to watch the ending. I had like everything when I played dragon slayer IV on my msx. But the password was in japanese, and back then I couldn't really make a difference. This is one of the reasons I started learning japanese :D

    GREAT videos crabby

  • Yeah I loved this game when I was a kid and still long to play it even now.

Awesome video! You are quite funny!

  • Excellent, challenging game. It took me several attempts to finally conquer this game. Love this game! It was very satisfying beating this game :)

  • this game was so frustrating.

  • Dsmn, I could never beat this when I was a kid... looking forward to the LP.

  • I never understood why the dad didn't have legs.

  • What's the story behind the castle?

  • Pochi can also be damaged by enemy attacks. But enemy collisions don't do squat, and that's about half the danger in the game.

  • oh, and for beginning players: pick pochi first so you can get used to the game, stockpile some gold and keys, and pick up the first few important items easier.

but like he said, I would pick lyll first just becuase she jumps the highest. or Xeym because he's the best at killing things (best range/power). but Lyll is great with the spiked boots

  • the introduction is great!

this is one of my favorite games of all time.

when I got this game like 15 years ago I had no clue how to play it and it was too hard. it's not the type of game that random people can pick up and get going. you need to know what your supposed to do, and what the items are. the intro should help a lot of people if they play the game

  • I love Legacy of the Wizard. I've played it since I was like 3.

  • oh wow. I beat this game as a kid. its great. this and solstice were my favs.

  • Hmm, Dragon Slayer... I think I played the first one on the Game Boy, was kinda fun to some extent. Anywho game seems good thus far, keep up the good work.

  • I can't imagine that the first one ever came out for game boy.

  • I'm positive it was. Google Image it. You should be able to find it. Plus it fits your description of it while I was lurking around Something Awful.

  • @DeceasedCrab It was a Japan only release to the best of my knowledge, so that may be why.

  • WOAH! Legacy of the Wizard! I've SO wanted someone to let's play this, especially a video let's play. This game was great to play, but I was so confused as a 5 year old playing this and I'm still confused 18 years later. Thank you DC! This made my day.

  • Good luck DC I gave this a shot not too long, I couldn't even figure out where to go. Can't wait to see you play through this strange lil game :)

  • I've actually played that before. I congratulate you for taking it on.

  • Nice, a Let's Play of LotW, looking forward to this.

The Dog is a lot more useful than first seems, he has the ability to Monster Climb. Due to sketchy coding, the Dog can climb up enemies, and this can be used to make the Dog reach places he couldn't usually, as the enemy A.I will act as normal and walk left and right whilst in the air (because the player is on the same lateral posistion as them).

  • Alright, this is the first game of your Let's Play series' that I actually recognized right away! I look forward to your comments on poison and how evil this game is.

  • Ahh good old sarcastic dead crabs and flying decapitated hands. Good job with this one.

  • Looks fun! :)

  • That's a dog?!?!

  • Oh man, great game choice. I never got too far into this one, so it'll be great to see it get explored to no cost of my own sanity :)

  • By the way, DC... I hope you have FCEUXD SP Ver 1.06 or higher... I heard that regular FCEU, or any other emulator messes up when you try to beat the final boss.

  • Rest assured that I am able to beat the final boss.

  • Sweet! I used to have this game but could never beat it. Good luck!

  • nice

  • Looks cool. I'll be playing this one on the GP2X for sure.

  • those guys look really flipped.

    Cat maul cape monster!

  • I am excited... I've been hoping you'd Let's Play another open-ended dungeon-type game. Good Luck!

  • Oh man! Legacy of the Wizard! I have this!

    .....Didn't get far, at all.
