Man it's your fuel injectors. One of them is broken. If it's a TDCI you can buy another fuel injector cuz u cannot repair it because it has a chip in the fuel injector which is broken too.If it's TDDI you can repair it.
normaly an injector fault but i also seen these engines over fuel to the point of hydrolock and compress con rods which reduces compression pressure and smokes like a bas***d runs like shite too. poor engine poor fuel system seen a few do this working for a ford dealer. hate them realy hate these engines.
@smudgebaby1982 Its no surprise, ZSD were a company in Dagenham who made these tripe 420/422 engines under a joint-venture with Ford they called "Puma" I would call it a conspiracy to become worse, not a venture. They were the same company who made engines for LDV. LDV's are bad enough without a delphi fuel injection system so I don't know how the hell Ford had the nerve to make the entire thing Delphi. They were also plauged with ICU failures which mean't they were unreliable starters.
@thecompaqguy I'd take an ST TDCi over a 3 series BMW anyday....after all, an ST TDCi is basically a Jaguar with a wig on.....dont know much about cars do you!
@snico You obviously don't know much yourself either... An ST TDCi over a BMW because its a "Jag with a wig on" Oh thats laughable and its a classic one. Jag X types are a jumped up Ford Mondeo, its not a Ford Mondeo watered down from a Jag. Ford bought Jag and they based the X type on the Mondeo because they needed a Mondeo sized Jag. The ZSD 422 engines in ST TDCi's are a joke, they are unreliable and they are bought by no-brainers who know zilch about cars. If you knew about cars = BMW.
@1ns4ne1d10t I know a fair bit yes....I know that the 3 series BMW is now considered a very common car, it is no longer a luxury car like it used to be. "Jag with a wig on" is a phrase people use to associate the cars similarity. X Types are not a jumped up mondeo, sub frame and chassis are completely diff, not the same as some people make out. The X Type shares about 20% same parts only!...BMW = Overated yuppie mobile/reps car, JAG = Luxury car.....Iwould pick an Audi over a BMW!
@snico Its strange how you would pick a ZSD Ford Mondeo with the notorious delphi injection system and ICU problems over a BMW 3 series. I wouldn't say BMW are as much of a sales rep image as Ford, Ford Mondeo's and Focuses are the most notorious 'sales rep' cars around. They are famously dubbed as "Repmobiles" I like Jags my favourite one is the new XK and I like the XF as I have had the privilage to drive one. I just hate the X type. I would pick Audi over BMW too, good choice.
@1ns4ne1d10t The Delphi rails are in lots of engines though and have always been notorious for failing, up until they replaced componants in about 2005 (ish). Vectras and Mondes are the traditional repmobiles, but for last few years BMW has seen a massive increase in the rep market, dont forget though they sell a lot more Mondeos and Vectras. They are very reliable hence fleet companies use them. You hear more horror stories because there a huge number of them about.
@snico I don't listen to people when they say a Ford or Vauxhall is reliable, for all the problems they get, they really aren't worth the hassel of owning - fair enough if its cheap, but I won't go out of my way to pay more for it over Audi or BMW, if the Germans are the same asking price as a Ford you'd be an idiot to buy a Ford. Just the word Vauxhall/Ford doesn't exactly counjour up words of quality and ever lasting reliability and I like to have peace of mind when I own a car. :-)
@1ns4ne1d10t They may have been true years back, but Ford and Vauxhall have come a long way since then, they are just stuck with the stigma of being unreliable. German cars are more reliable, but you do a pay a large premium for them. I drive quite a few diff cars in my job, more Audis than anything, and I would say that the new Mondeo is a better drive and handles a lot better. I'm not a big of fan of Fords, but the new Mondeo is one of the best cars I have driven this past year.
@snico I used to work as a vehicle prep and I used to drive Insignias, Mondeo's and the occasional BMW but not Audi. I used to drive thousands of different cars but I don't do it anymore because I left enterprise. The 'nice to drive' Mondeo thing is a bit of a gimmick, I drove them quite a lot and its not everything that would charm me into buying one. Insignias have a horribly hard ride but sharper handling then a Mondeo and the cabin space is horribly cramped especially in the rear.
@1ns4ne1d10t Only drove the Insignia once and i didnt like it one bit. They are a good car if you want to have back ache after a long journey, you just cant get a comfortable driving postion in them, well I couldnt anyway.
@snico Enterprise rent a car is prodominently a Vauxhall/Opel fleet, followed closely by Fords then after Fords its just a mixed bag of surprises. That means I almost lived in Insignias, Astras and Corsas driving them all the time, hoovering them out, filling them up, jet washing them etc etc. The clutches on them are viciously abrupt, especially the 2.0 CDTi's. The CDTi's had lots of hard torque and gusto but very bad for refinement, the engines feel as rough as bears.
@snico Yet I drive the Insignia CDTi 2.0 160 for work, among others like VW Passats and Audis and think the Insignia is a fantastic car, and out of the ones listed would be my choice for a private purchase.
@thecompaqguy If half these imbacilles ever worked for Ford themselves or knew about the turd-bucket diesel engines that got thrown into these, they wouldn't be on here defending it. Most people like you who learn their lesson about Ford and GM reliability usually end up getting a BMW diesel in the end and never look back. Its only the no-brainers who keep hold of ST TDCi's and keep buying them again like worn out trainers. I think they like the expensive repair bills.
the Delphi injectors on this engine are crap.. mine failed and were all replaced, less than 12 months later they are going again and the car never see's anything other than Shell diesel, no supermarket rubbish.
Exactly the same thing happened on my R reg Mercedes sprinter last month. engine was chugging & the exhaust was puffing out black & grey smog just like that & it smelt of burning. Are you sure you didn't put a tad too much oil in? If you havn't then the fuel pump may have seen better days...
Sound like a injector to me, i'm a ford technician, the injectors are 2 stage injectors, when the vehicle is cold it runs on a lower fuel pressure, if the cold start nozzle of the injector is stuck open or stuck half closed then it won't run correctly until the engine gets up to running temperature and the second stage starts although it will still be underpowered, they are very common at 100k miles and above, thats why ford recommend changing 4 rather than just the one fault injector.
im a ford tech also. this is as comman as muck. as your say, replace the 4 at the one time. could also be the start of the fuel pump going. the filings block the injectors sometimes before the pump fails. this means a very very hefty bill for pump, injectors, lines etc.
It cant be an injector because it clears its self. it looks like you've either by passed the egr valve (looking for more power) or its clogged up with shit, try using shell fuel rather than shit fuel
yeah they are like many other cars. the tddi is the more reliable one i have one and had no engine trouble ever! and on rolling road it produces 129.9bhp so its not so bad
er... maybe the mercedes vans, crappy cracky interior plastics, but not the cars my friend. Nothing shit about Mercedes build quality. Mercedes M classes (hate to say it) are much better on the inside with better quality leather & wood than Range Rovers. I drove a Range Rover Vogue TDV6 last Xmas eve & I was least impressed with the interior build quality, the leather seats were slowly flaking away & the imitation dashboard wood was easily scratched off. Its as bad as a Rover!
Hi there, i got the car repaired under warrenty so i dont know the cost involved. But i used Desmond motors in londonderry/Derry. Ford thought i had bad diesel also, then thought it was the EGR valve so replaced it with no effect so they knew it had to be an injector. problem was it wasnt showing any fault codes on the ECU to determine which injector was at fault so ford authorised the replacement of all four injectors and that sorted her out. she ran alot better afterwards.
Thanks very much, I wish ours was that simple. Ford put four new injectors in last week and the car just ate them. They were knackard within a few minutes. Mine has just went out of warranty and they have said about it needing a new engine. So far I think they have spent over £1000 trying to fix the current one. Although we do have a case, if it needs a whole new engine, it means it had been defective from new (because of the particular symptoms)Thanks again.
I have a mondeo ST Tdci 2.2 with the same problem, although its not smoking quite as bad. I was wondering how much it cost you to get this fixed, and where did you get it fixed. I noticed the NI reg, I am also in NI and am dealing with Lindsay Ford, who currently have the car for cold start tests. Its the third time they have had it in and thought it was dirty fuel the first two times.
