Flew on one of these in 2001 and in all honesty it was the worst flight of my life lol the seats were covered horrible, old, torn up leather. The air con was broke so it was impossible to get comfy and we had severe turbulence on landing
I flew on one to Toronto and back with Air Transat in 1997. It was my first time in an aeroplane and I knew nothing about them, but I remember the smooth ride and the wonderful roar of the RB211s on take-off and reverse thrust on landing.
@neilkt may i ask where were you flying to? Cause I went for the first time on an aircraft from toronto to cuba around that same year, and vividly going on the tristar. For many years thought it was the DC-10 but the intake on engine 2 was different
@Avion3333 the tail engine sucks in more air because of the ducts the flows down to the engine in the back. its actually the strongest vengine on the plane. just like the Boeing 727, same engine its just the duct that makes it more stronger flowing in the air. if both side engines failed the tail one is as strong as both.
@amemy1 if its one thing that irritates me fighting with a white kid, why dont you just visit the Science Museum of Industry in Chicago, IL. they have a Boeing 727-200 where you go inside it and a glass through window around the original engines looking at the fans with all these videos and descriptions of how the tail engine is as strong as both are, its my saying so..
@hondacl0n3 COOL DOWN. I will look into the physics of the tail engine. Maybe the airflow through the ducts improves trust on that particular engine x2, but i am not convinced. The third engine is buried in the tail, and so has a longer inlet duct, and that can only cause to airflow to be impeded as it has further to travel. What comes out of the tail pipe exhaust is simply newtons laws of; mass acceleration, plus action/reaction.
The same as the other two side engines. Thanks for reply.
@mcwolfus Actually, since you're starting with 2 engines, you're adding half of that, which is 1 engine. Not just a third more, a half more power. If you went from 3 to 2 then you'd be losing a third. And they are most certainly very lovely planes.
@mcwolfus not economical and it throws off the balance during landing. Maybe Tristar is different but the DC10 and MD11 tri jets had a lot of crashes due to the design of the plane.
a beautiful landing, almost like a natural childbirth. In pointing out a comparison to the DC-10, Lockheed may have had a better format with the s-duct on the #2 or center engine as it didn't interfere with the rudder. On the DC-10 the bottom of the rudder had to be split in order to accomodate the blast nozzle of the center engine.
Ive travelled back from Nepal on on of these, I had the pleasure of having a seat right under the rear engine... It lulled me to sleep. What a fantastic aircraft. 1991 I think.
I traveled from New York JFK to Amsterdam back in 1988 on a Royal Jordanian airliner. I wish that I would have payed closer attention to that...of course I was only 17. For some reason I keep coming up with a L-1011. I think I saw the plane maybe at some point before we boarded. I wonder if that was the possible aircraft? Any commnets would be appreciated.
One of the best airlines to ever fly this sexy girl was BWIA which was also one of the smallest. Flew on it to London and back from Trinidad. It was a dream and a pleasure.
@johnsonza LOL. Thanx man! To me, I believe it is as well. It's unfortunate that we no longer hold the name British West Indian Airways anymore but It lives through Caribbean Airlines and 1 day, I hope we recruit some beautiful heavies to expand our fleets.
@fachy1981 Dumbest statement I've read here. Number of casualties is also based on number of the type aircraft operating all over the world. Everyone with any airplane knowledge knows that the Boeing 737 is THE MOST successful passanger plane ever built. Therefore it is also the most common plane found all over the world. There are a MUCH higher number of 737's operating all over the world than say the Airbus A319, A320 and A321 combined! They've also been flying for several decades.
@anacrobat89 people often make that mistake. The biggest crasher, is usually the the most widely flown. Ther crash remains a percentage of the fleet dispite frequency of incidents.
The most amazing looking plane in my eyes... Unfortunately I never got to fly on one and now most of them are nearing scrap with primitive overseas airlines. I like the DC-10 too but that looks like the 3rd engine was just bolted on. Looks better on the tristar as it is actually part of the plane. Sometimes technology means the legends get left in the mist. Same story with cars too.
Hey, what year was this? I'm sure we had to take one of these on the way back from Southern Europe once on behalf on Monarch in the late 90s. Except ours was an Icelandic Airways Tri star I think.
I imagine it was Air Atlanta Icelandic. They held a lot of contracts in the late 90's for charter carriers using tristars before they switched to 747/767. Air Ops, TBG and Air Scandic also took on a lot of charter work during this time with L1011.
i am fascinated by planes, esp. the three-engined trijets. Damn, the Lockheed L-1011 TriStar, looks beautiful, fascinating and sexy. I love this plane so much that if it was to be a woman, no doubt we will make love in bed tonight!
I would know what stupid people over there is comparing the Tristar to a 737 and saying it's a piece of junk.
I respect all airplanes, but personally the Tristar were first the 2nd widebody ever made and second in all the incidents that this aircraft had, they all were made by human mistakes (not like the DC-10 that had a cargo-door failure after few months).
The A380, yes is new, but I thinks it's too big and fuel-thirsty.
In what route there's so much requirement for a 500 seat aircraft?
@Arcticewl nice story, "I have flew the A380." None of your uploads have a video of A380. All u have is 737, 777, and 747! Do not even compre these aircrafts with A380. No comparison.
@cliffthelightning Boeing is now 10 years behind Airbus. Airlines that use the 747-400 will be looking to upgrade in the near future and it seems that A380 is the more popular choice. Airlines don't just want another 747 derivative. They want a completely new airliner.
@fachy1981 You're right, they'll will purchase the 787 :p I don't really see the point in the A380, only a handful of airlines will actually be able to use it. The 747 was built in a time when it's size and capacity were essential to the evolution of commercial flight, not so with the A380. It would seem that in truth, Airbus is 40 years behind Boeing ;)
@phillyslasher 747-8 is a cheap and boring replacement for the classic 747-400 series in my mind's eye. Boeing did not want to invest in an all new 747 replacement as it was seen too risky a business venture. I applaud Airbus once again for taking the risk and pushing the envelope in terms of innovation and design. I think Airbus have pushed aviation 20 years into the future whereas Boeing is still tinkering with a 1960's old rusted antique 747 design.
The L-1011 will forever live on, it's the aeroplanes of this era that got us where we are today let's not forget that, this is a very robust beast.......
737 to every Boeing fan is an aircraft that needs to go in an museum as an antique. 737 is an dangerous plane to travel . If you love your life go and sit in some other aircraft. This is now nothing but rusted antique of 70s. Recently in Jamaica a rusted 737-800 of the 70s and 80s crashed. LOL the engine fell off, and the wheel colapsed LOL.Check it out American airlines DEC 22, 2009
I cannot believe how many R-T--DS have commented on this video and comparing a TriStar to a b737. You people need to go back down in your holes and pull the dirt back over your heads. Ounce that happens, I will be prayin' for rain.
The aircraft isnt this short, it is due to editing of the original video to fit into the youtube veiwing window.....it has been squashed. It doesnt hold the same amount of ppl as a 737800. The L1011 holds in the order of 250-350 ppl, depending on version. There were quite a few versions of this excellent aircraft. Few are in use today due to more economical aicraft being available. Operators are replacing these aircraft with 777 and A330.
Flown on L-1011's many times. I love that jet. Man its awesome. I wish the airlines in the U.S. still flew the tri-jets. It would make one badass corporate jet.
@chadsexinton It is most likely the cost to operate an older plane that is probably very difficult to find spare parts for. It takes 3 to fly the plane unless it has had a complete cockpit upgrade with flight management system. It is less efficient to operate than a 767ER, 777ER. etc., etc., etc.,
I find this easy to masturbate to.
