yes, I agree with lalo10cr, this is an insult to the opera. Guys runnig across the stage while fixing cables and ropes. It is insane. But Miklosa is great!!!
Does somebody have "O Zittre nicht" of this production? Id love to see it. Miklósa is absolutelly brilliant! That really scared me... I guess thats the way it should be!
@myprrrecious Of course I do, it's just that Minkowski usually pushes all the tempi to their extremes, so this was just a tiny little joke regarding that habit of his. :)
I'm hungarian too, i was born in Kiskunhalas like Erika Miklósa too! We are so proud that Erika is the first Queen of night on the world! Thanks for this video! :)
well, now I go back and listen a month later, it is not as raspy as I heard it first.. maybe it was my audio. She is a very strong character and singer in her own right.
This is one of my favorite interpretation! For this powerful and kind of scary acting (which matches completly with the character), and at the same time a beautiful singing!
I didn't like her performance in the other video, the one she's singing with the orchestra. I must say that seeing her acting, her voice gets a bit better for this aria. She sounds angrier. But her acting........ I don't know... I don't think this character suit her.
I think Minko is absolutely brilliant...when was the last time you heard this aria played with such variety and sensitivity to dynamics?! The inner harmonies are given life and movement and the whole thing takes on a gothic brilliance that one almost NEVER hears. Miklosa sings the crap out of the thing, but she's clearly part of the music making, not just a canary chirping away.
Her facial expressions! They're amazing! She's actually acting as well as singing. Best Queen I've seen so far. Better even than Damrau. That was painful to say, but true. Wow.
This is the best performence or Queen of the Night I have ever seen. Shes not perfect, her voice isnt brilliant, but her expressions, face, emotions, Thats how Queen of the Night have to look like, She really scares me
@Arminiushoff Yeah, You're right, she's shining like a very diamond... and that's - in my opinion - the reason why the scene is so poor (or simple)...
This performance made me sit up in my seat. Certainly not the costumes, or the fact that she turned around, or the setting or anything, but the way she dominated the stage completely sucked me in.
Amazing performance! Although now I'm curious to see what the rest of the production is like... they seem to be going for a cheesy 1970s sci-fi vibe. :) Thanks for sharing!
I don't quite follow the rest of what's happening on stage, but that was a stunning rendition of the aria. One of the few times the Queen has actually been scary...
Does anyone else get chills around 2:03 when she just grits her teeth and smiles while continuing to sing? I've seen a few of her performances of this now and it seems to be one of her favorite things to do. It's so deranged and it just makes me feel so afraid for my own life, it's so cool! It really captures the mood of the aria.
I love this video not just because of the great music but because of the facial expressions of Erika Miklosa. I always see the divas standing there ina red dress
(I don't know why) singing this piece like it was some kind of singing exercise. I love the fact that i can see the pure twisted evil that lies within her and is seeking revenge. BIG thumbs up.
In this staging, they tried to imagine what, in today's culture, could express the magic and dream Mozart put in this story. And came out with this brilliant idea of a video-game. But of course, it can't be oubvious on such a short video. It may seem shocking of course. But I think what will kill opera is not modernity. Opera will die if it doesn't accept modernity !

@HConstantine I have seen this version of die Zauberflote in Paris, and it was wonderful. Have you seen more than this video? If not, then you're not in a position to judge this production. I go to the opera a lot, and this was not the first Zauberflote i've seen, but so far it is the best. The singers were awesome and very well directed. And the staging was modern and imaginative. Most of the opera production is desperately kitsch and dull. This staging was not !
According to libretto the Queen is monstruous and crazy, and I believe that the music idea behind coloratura parts is actually demonic laughter. Any other interpretation makes these parts obsolete decoration. Miklosa is the only singer I heard that is interpreting this part correctly - as laughter. Good job!
Btw, techno-sadistic set design doesn't fit this play.

@obilicevvenac Actually, the first Queen, Josepha Hoffer, Mozart`s sister in law, had an amazing coloratura soprano, that sounded enogh lyric for 'O zittre nict' and dramatic for 'Er holle rache' and so he wrote those two incredibly difficult arias to show her vocal ability. But no one denies that the extensive coloratura passages reflect Queen`s crazed persona wonderfully.
@ionutz1791 Yes, sometimes. Bad, that the 2nd Horn is unable to play a clear ending, after the first sentence, and is also bad, that the timpanist makes too long roll short before the end of the aria. Maybe he hasnt seen the conductor, or didnt hear. (Or both...)
perfect voice and persponality for queen of the ´night. a very light cooloratura soprano and a powerful strong voice - a light dramatic coloratura soprano
I think this performance is okay, but it's not perfect. I actually really like this tempo I think it gives it a sense of urgency. But, I hate her vibrato on that top note. Ew.
Great performance--but what the hell is wrong with the set? Not to mention the outlandish outfits. A yellow jumpsuit for Pamina? Labcoats? It looks like a cheap rip from a low-budget sci-fi film. It was like watching Star-Trek or something.
:) i think she's one of the top queens these days, if not the best (now that the great Diana Damrau has given up on it) and her longevity in that role is stunning.
Still, I would love to see her take on new challenges. No only is she a great singer, but she is so pleasant to watch
Miklosa is quite good here. the f's are a bit screechy but good. what the fuck is up with the set though? and the pamina? omg i know greats looks and great voice dont always coincide and that beauty shouldnt be first concern, but what tamino would want a pamina that looked like that? she looks like a man dressing liek a woman dressing like a man
And what production isn't these days? :) Sometimes it can all turn out great and heighten the level of drama or comedy (like Offenbach's La Belle Helene under Minko) but most of the time it's just plain weird. Luckily, you can always close your eyes and listen to the wonderful music. :)
She definently ran off the stage saying wtf is this? I'm outta here.

She doesn't the voice clearly
ionutz1791 2 years ago
@ionutz1791 Yes, sometimes. Bad, that the 2nd Horn is unable to play a clear ending, after the first sentence, and is also bad, that the timpanist makes too long roll short before the end of the aria. Maybe he hasnt seen the conductor, or didnt hear. (Or both...)

Careful with that dagger, Mom! You might put a hole in that air mattress or whatever it was.

Mmh her voice has darkened quite a bit, makes her better in this role.
Pity for the little slip at 1:59, this was a very good performance

Minkowski has this habit of ALWAYS picking the perfect tempi, at least as far as my taste in music is concerned. :)

perfect voice and persponality for queen of the ´night. a very light cooloratura soprano and a powerful strong voice - a light dramatic coloratura soprano

This is so a disgusting performance. I hate it. And I think, her voice is to weak.

Well, the staging leaves it open to debate. I love her costume and make up, but that's it. The rest I don't.
However, Minkowski's direction is incredibly energetic and her rendition of this aria is stunning.

I agree with you 100%. :)

:) i think she's one of the top queens these days, if not the best (now that the great Diana Damrau has given up on it) and her longevity in that role is stunning.
Still, I would love to see her take on new challenges. No only is she a great singer, but she is so pleasant to watch
juju1305 2 years ago 2
Can't say which one I like better. Both Damrau and Miklosa are great queen of the night.

Miklosa is quite good here. the f's are a bit screechy but good. what the fuck is up with the set though? and the pamina? omg i know greats looks and great voice dont always coincide and that beauty shouldnt be first concern, but what tamino would want a pamina that looked like that? she looks like a man dressing liek a woman dressing like a man

what a strange production.

And what production isn't these days? :) Sometimes it can all turn out great and heighten the level of drama or comedy (like Offenbach's La Belle Helene under Minko) but most of the time it's just plain weird. Luckily, you can always close your eyes and listen to the wonderful music. :)
