It does not "strengthen the protections". It "lengthens the sentences". The only justified alteration to a sentence of a criminal who committed a crime based on prejudice is the mandatory inclusion of education in their rehabilitation.

What I mean by this is, many crimes are committed because of hate, many more due to plain old anger, much because of greed, and certainly some due to lack of empathy or as a result of boredom...
Things like assault, defamation, inciting violence, conspiracy to a criminal act & so on, these are all already crimes, no matter who you commit them against - only now, if you are NOT one of the privileged minorities, then you have less resource in the eyes of the law, and THAT is intrinsically unjust.
By the way, I'm in a religious minority myself (atheist) & other minorities as well (having Aspergers, which some would call a disability), BUT I still think that singling out specific groups and DISCRIMINATING against classes of people who don't fit into those groups is very wrong. I don't support 'blasphemy' legislation because I believe in FREE SPEECH, and I don't support 'hate crimes' legislation because I believe in EQUALITY FOR ALL under the law.

Sorry, but you are incorrect... In Australia (my country), people without aboriginal heritage are discriminated against when it comes to government benefits. In several countries, there is legislation covering 'affirmative action' which discriminates against non-minorities..

I'm against legislation that punishes children for the crimes of their parents, and against legislation that discriminates against either the majority OR a minority, except where such discrimination is warranted and logical (like allowing a blind guy to take his dog on the train, but not any derro with his mongrel).

This bill actually has a provision in it (Section 10) that re-affirms your right to criticize Islam, as well as any/all religions, races, disabilities, sexual orientations, etc. Any and all of the cases you stated above would have been helped by this bill, providing extensive funding for the FBI to help when requested by local authorities.
Maybe Republicans need a bit of physical education before they can understand this Bill. If you're Asian and hear about someone killing another Asian in your neighborhood because the murderer hated Asians, you may not feel safe walking around your neighborhood. A simple conclusion not borne out in reality . When a crime targets a group, that group will bear some anxiety no matter the punishment to the perpetrator.

Anyone retarded enough to beat up a guy for not liking pussy isn't going to be thinking rationally enough to care about harsher punishments, so laws like that are useless. In fact they potentially create MORE hate by fostering resentment against the minority for being shown special treatment.
Laws should govern actions not thoughts - it's ALREADY against the law to beat someone up, and people do it for all kinds of reasons (boredom, psychosis, greed etc) - why should one reason get singled out?

The old testament is the teaching of the jewish religion. Which is very differnt from the christian religion, which is taught in the new testament.

This bill actually has a provision in it (Section 10) that re-affirms your right to criticize Islam, as well as any/all religions, races, disabilities, sexual orientations, etc. Any and all of the cases you stated above would have been helped by this bill, providing extensive funding for the FBI to help when requested by local authorities.

Wow umm this is why religion is seperate from state. Open your eyes to understand not every one believes in what you do and they have every right to do what they want so long as its consenting adults. Hate if you want but also don't turn around and get angry and demand resolution if some one provides many example of hate speech toward your beliefs.

Actually it's ignorance on your behalf, because your simply judging a minority with a majority, which is considered a stereotype. True christians and let me say it again "true christians" do not believe in persucuting people for their sins; they kno that the ultimate judment is in gods hands. The people that go around judging people and calling themselves christians are not really christians, because god does'nt hate the person he hates the sin and so should a true christian follow the same.

Wow... that was quite out of context, wouldn't your agree? Why quote Matthew 7:23 and leave out Matthew 7:22? Jesus was condemning false prophets... I am always amazed how some people can quote a verse in a way that is convenient to them. Just for thought, you should read Matthew 23:13 and its following verses.... Jesus wants us to look into ourselves, and not judge others first. If we work too hard judging others, our inner selfs can be as unclean as a tomb.

My point exactly; I don't believe in homosexuality, but that does'nt mean that I'm gonna go around condeming ever homosexual I see. I live like a true christian and love the person, but hate the sin. People need to stop trying to be god and follow him, because when a person considers themselves a christian they have to follow all of gods teachings not the ones they choose to pick out and falsify. My feelings also.
So I am more than a bit confused with the broad support for legislation that sets some victims as more important or more essential to society than others.
Legislation such as this does so much to entrench the idea that gender, sexual orientation, or ethnicity ARE valid means of classifying members of a society. This Law is a slap in the face to people who truly are w/o prejudice.

This Law does nothing to prevent criminal acts. It does perpetuate the myth that gender, sexual orientation, or ethnicity is a VALID means of determining worth. You show your own prejudices by supporting Laws like this one. In effect, you are what you say you seek to destroy with legislation like this.

maskedphrogg, random crime affects the one person, but hate crime affects an entire group of people. If you're Asian and hear about someone killing another Asian in your neighborhood because the murderer hated Asians, you may not feel safe walking around your neighborhood. We deal with hate crimes based on race, creed, national origin, sexual orientation, etc. more seriously because of this reason.

A simple conclusion not borne out in reality . When a crime targets a group, that group will bear some anxiety no matter the punishment to the perpetrator.
If you were being honest you would be able to admit that what this Law does is provide cover for your own prejudice and desire to see malevolence done to groups you find disagreeable. By sanctioning your prejudicial action with the authority of Law you hope to protect yourself from the repercussions of your ill intent.
