Just listened to the amazing genius of "Planet Rock" which launched a thousand ships. Another classic I highly recommend is "Nunk" by Warp 9, both the vocal and instrumental versions. I say yes to MrRossogood's thoughtful comment.
The early 80's was a musical rethink. New York producers like Arthur Baker, John Robie, Richard Scher, Lotti Golden, Mantronix, Hashim and Man Parrish moved dance music from the tired disco of the 70's into a new, interesting, hybrid of sounds and cultures grounded in Roland 808 beats and synths. The highly imaginative sound of electro hip hop would set the stage for the R&B pop music of the 80's from Janet Jackson to Prince.
Just to clarify, the hook in this song is a combo of two Kraftwerk songs, the backbeat is from Kraftwerk's 'Numbers' and the synth chorus is from Kraftwerk's 'Trans Europe Express' , Tour De France would be written a few years later than this, although that was a crucial sample as well. See MC ADE 'Base Rock Express' for another great Trans Europe Express sample.
Yes!!! its right Afrika Bambaataa stole this track from Kreftwerk tour de france and (made the great play )----like Ice Cube says . and made a few million. but i still love both songs i,m not a hater hats off too both groups.
