It's something unitil recently I wasn't even aware of I must confess! Saw it in a YouTube interview with Sonny Landreth. It's typically used on electric guitars I guess though. Never saw anybody using it on an acoustic.

Very melodic and beautiful, initially I heard more Kottke until I listenened to the Cohen original with which I was not familiar. You caught the fusion perfectly.
