That's a natural formation. It looks like a big rock, debris from a recent crater, maybe. It reflects bright because of where the sun is at, which is bound to happen here and there when you photograph an entire planet. You can see another piece of debris in the "low-res" photo.

+ the "hi res" looks like the mid-res, upscaled and enhanced, which isn't hi-res, just speculation.

the sun is very low on the horizon, thus making a single rock look like a super structure even though it's probably about 3-5 feet out of the surface.

the other rocks next to it have similar shadows, and those are barely a few inches out of the martian surface.

Well at first it seems like Aldrin is the best person to ask when it comes to stuff like this. But has he been there and seen it? No! He has only seen the photo like everybody else and it is his opinion that it is a monolith.

BTW I have to admit I don't know the exact definition of monolith. It has to be made out of one piece, I know that. But does monolith only aply to something man made, or can a natural occurence also be called monolith?
