  • Slavery ...

  • Fucking people man.. I don't get it. This world is fucked up .

  • i WAS IN nyc TODAY AND i SAW THE HORSE CARRIAGES BEING PLLED. i totally SUPPORT BANNING CARRIAGES FROM THE CITY! I have a horse and I know she's in good she[e and not abused. Its hurts to see horses in painI saw i supporting women in the streets and yelled out, I agree with you! I went over to a tired horse and stroked his head. he looked so heartbroken and tired…..all i said to him was, hang in there buddy.

  • This must stop. RIGHT NOW.

  • SHAME ON ALL THE TOURISTS AND RESIDENTS WHO SUPPORT THIS CRUEL INDUSTRY BY PAYING AND ENJOYING RIDES WILE THE HORSES SUFFER< SHAME!!!!

  • @HenryBerghNYC You really are a moron. Anna Sewell wrote Black Beauty to point out the inhumane treatment of horses and other animals in Victorian era England. It was not meant to improve the live of carriage drivers. Sewell used Jerry the cab driver as an example that one could be poor, and still be a good, kind owner. Jerry does NOT die, but becomes ill, and upon his recovery, is advised to give up the life of a London cab driver, which he does. Stop spewing misinformation.

  • All horse carriages in NYC should be replaced with antique cars. That way, the horses could be saved, no one would lose their job, and tourists could still experience the glitz and glamour of NYC without contributing to this inhumane industry.

  • @heidihasthefloor tourists should be confronted and educated.

  • Thaniks for the update but I vaguely recalled that it was Joe who finally rescued BB. I will have to reread the book. And Jerry n his children as I recall were too poor to keep black beauty or something like that I read it more than 30 years ago--In my case I was a rider on the Southern circuit showing horses as a teen. Ours were well treated and enjoyed most of it. However, there were instances of absuse there as well, like gingering a horse which we all were disgusted by.

  • @2violettina BB was a humane treatise to improve the lives of horses AND of carriage drivers, who in London were horribly underpaid and treated just as cruelly by the upper classes as the upper classes treated horses. In the book, Jerry DIES because some thoughtless SOBs kept him and BB waiting in the cold and rain for hours outside a party. BB then falls into the hands of a *bad* cab company because of Jerry's death, which Joe rescues him from. Jerry was other hero of the book besides BB.

  • face it, horses don't belong to a crowded & big city like NYC. this should be banned!

  • All of you people carrying on about poor Charlie and how much pain he was supposed to be in jsut havent heard the news. The ASPCA suspended Dr. Corey after she tried to correct the part about his being in pain. Yes, that's right, the ASPCA suspended Dr Corey without pay when she tried to clarify or retract previous statements about Charlie being in pain. TWo weeks and counting ASPCA, IF YOU HAVE NOTHING TO HIDE- SHOW US THE NECROPSY!!

  • Luke is just fine. He didn't collapse and he didn't die. He got himself tangled in his harness after he got a leg over one of the carriage shafts. Luke knew what to do when he found himself in trouble. He lay quietly like the smart and good horse he is. He trusted him human partner to get him out of trouble. GOOD HORSE, LUKE!

  • As far as I am aware this horse Luke did get up after 15 minutes. Why did he collapse in the first place? Some say he was overworked & tired, others say he bucked & got tangled in the shaft of the carriage. Irrespective of why he went down, how many more have to collapse & possibly die like Charlie did a week earlier; before this industry is stopped. Horses legs & hooves are not built to pound concrete all day, in all weathers, then there is internal injury's from exhaust fumes. It has to stop!

  • isn't there a government agency for the protection of animals in the US? like the rspca in the uk? i find it shocking that this could happen in a supposedly modern, western nation. then again you let sick humans die if they cant pay their hospital bills so maybe i was being naive

  • Oh shit this is awful ,as a horse lover & owner this really flippin upset me ,This is DISGUSTING ... TIME TO STOP THIS CRUELTY ,i'm so sorry you witnessed this {hugs} COME ON AMERICA !!

  • R.I.P. 15 yr old Charlie, collapsed & died whilst pulling a NYC carriage. He was found to have a "pronounced, chronic ulceration of the stomach." The cause of death is still undetermined, but that condition would have meant almost certainly that Charlie was in severe pain at the time of his death. "We are very concerned that Charlie was forced to work in spite of painful maladies," said Dr. Pamela Corey, of ASPCA. These sentient beings do not belong in congested traffic working in all weathers

  • @lovesmehorse Read today's editorial in the NYPost "ASPCA's Dead Horse" or yesterday's article on the CityRoomBlog of the New York Times, "Vet Who Spoke About Carriage Horse’s Death Is Suspended." Apparently the original report that you cite was "misleading."

  • @thedrafthorse Thank you for the update, but I only quoted what I read in the news at the time, 2 days ago.

  • It never ends. non stop cruelty and the city turn a blind eye to it. Poor horses.

  • What happened? The video shows a horse laying on the ground, that's all. From all of the comments that I've read, it looks like something more happened than was in the video. Anyone???

  • Now I KNOW I will NEVER take a carriage ride in NYC

  • THIS is HORRIBLE!

  • The New Yorkeans should have shame that occurs in their city. In general All American should be ashamed of the ill-treatment inflicted with the horses in their country. Without the sacrifices of the horses never the United States would not be what they are today.

  • @Veganius I am ashamed that my horses demand to come inside when it is too warm to stand in front of their fans, and happily elude my advances to catch them when it is nice outside.

  • @jumpthatjanx You understood well that I spoke in a general way. The mustangs, your last Mustangs, are tracked and sold for 5 dollars parts to bastards who will make them cut down in Mexican and Canadian slaughter-houses in which they undergo blows and ill-treatments before being killed. The law prohibiting to kill them is worth only for the territory of the United States.

  • @Veganius I'm having a hard time following your language. I do not ride or own Mustangs. I am well aware of what happens to them. There are worse fates for horses then the slaughterhouse. I know several people who have adopted mustangs, and there are very strict rules for owning and selling them. What do you suggest be done with animals that have overpopulated? Humans have spilled onto their land and unfortunately that cannot be reversed.

  • @jumpthatjanx But mustangs are not in overpopulation, there remains less than 35.000! They are eradicated by the cattle breeders who want their pastures ......

It is the same problems with your last bisons/buffalos of yelowstones, every years, under the pressure of the breeders lobbying the government kills it more and more. United States are an very big country, you cannot make some room for the rare wild animals which you did not kill ?

  • @jumpthatjanx (2) Your horses are happy, I congratulate you, but there is the million others. Yes it is shameful that a country which owes everything to horses treats them in a so cruel way . Now if you want to continue to make the ostrich...

  • AND for Wondoctor, YOU ARE THE PSYCHO. I think you are missing the entire point: Animals also have feelings so why should they be put on a lower level than humans ? They are equally capable of emotion. no one was denying the horrors in 3rd world countries. america also has horrors on her own soil which include the abuse, neglect of animals in addition to humans. So before you judge, think about it: the bums can speak up, the animals cannot. Both are as deserving of our attention.

  • Damn, what a smart horse. Most would be thrashing around trying to get unhooked, but this one waits patiently to get unhooked. He must trust the drivers a lot.

  • don't bother suggesting feeding horses to starving people, this horse and most all other domestic horses have drugs in their bodies that are banned in animals destined for human consumption. Suggesting feeding them to humans or pets is the same as suggesting it is ok to give poison. Horses are not raised to be food animals, the drugs they are given are never tracked, Phynelbutozone (Bute), toxic to humans & banned in animals destined for the food chain. Fact. period.

  • GET A LIFE YOU WEIRDO.......THERE ARE STARVING FREAKING HUMANS ALL OVER THE PLACE......I BET YOU DIDN'T CRY WHEN YOU PASSED ALL THE STARVING BUMS DRIVING TOWARDS THE HORSE INCIDENT!

    I HATE YOU ANIMAL PSYCHOS!

  • @WONDOCTORJ You JERK! Shut up. Keep your mean coments TO YOURSELF. JERK!

  • @HorseCrazygal101 why don't you go live with the horses in the woods......I will continue to try to build water wells for starving villages in third world countries.

    Freaking animal nut......

  • @WONDOCTORJ There's always a person like you in these comments.

How the hell can you come onto a video that shows people working a horse until it drops and dies and DEMAND people to care about other people?

Let me tell you something. The people worthy of my help will get all the help I can give. But scumbags that drive these carriages or abuse or torture other animals would never get the time of day from me.

  • @WildlifeDen And while I choose to spend time on people, you spend time on animals....

You are just like the crazy old lady with 200 cats crapping all over her house, and she never interacts with PEOPLE.

  • In tears. This inhumane treatment of these horses needs to be stopped. I am a horse lover, horse owner and I also drive Dixie, my mini horses. Horses do NOT belong in NYC!!!

  • Yet another example of why this should be banned. If only greed wasn't overpowering everything in this country!!

  • this has to end. has to. i pass by quite a few of these horses everyday in NYC, and you can just see the sadness in their eyes and the sluggishness of their walk.

i'm not even a huge animal lover, but it's just sickening. WHY do people need to ride these horses through the streets? is walking, using a bike, etc not enough? it's not romantic, not funny, not cute. end it now.

  • Horses were not made to endure busy city streets, pollution and the stress of bad drivers, and should not have to just because "people" want to ride in a horse-drawn carriage. How selfish.

  • WHAT IS IT GOING TO TAKE TO END THIS DISGUSTING TRADE?

  • This has to STOP Im so pissed...cant people see how freaking wrong it is to ride with a horse down the streets? u dont have to be a rcoket scientist to figure this out...

  • My heart is breaking for these poor animals. Unfortunately , The Mayor and the greedy owners only see DOLLAR SIGNS "IT'S GREAT FOR THE ECONOMY!" Humanity rarely exists in todays world. These beautiful creatures don't belong in any city environment. Yes, they are working animals but there are limitations which are ignored. WE ARE NOT LIVING IN THE MIDDLE AGES NOR ARE WE FARMERS therefore, horses do not belong in any congested city. "THE MIGHTY DOLLAR ALWAYS TAKES PRESIDENTS OVER HUMANITY. SAD!

  • What makes everyone assume that the horse is down due to abuse? Do you think all carriage horses are exempt from illness, or old age, or death except where you can't see them? I don't see anything saying that the horse was clipped by a vehicle, or that the horse was pulling an excessive weight- what am I missing here?

  • @lualncol There is no assumption here. The fact that the horse is down indicates there was something wrong that no one recognized or acknowledged. Abuse is not always overt & does not mean the horse was being beaten or pulling an excessive amount of weight. In the case of carriage horses, the abuse is inherent in the "job". Horses should not be pulling carriages through busy Manhattan streets for tourist money - PERIOD. I don't even think the police should be riding horses on NYC streets.

  • @marigrrrl The horse bucked on his way home and put a leg over the shafts and got tangled up. That is why he was down.. he fell. Like a GOOD horse, he stayed down and still (and didn't struggle), while waiting for his human friends to help him out of his predicament. Shows a lot of trust and being calm and relaxed. Lots of less well trained and less well adjusted horses would have hurt themselves very badly. This horse is absolutely fine, thanks to his people and his good attitude.

  • ""

WHEN IS THIS NIGHTMARE GOING TO FINALLY END??????????? "OMG" SHUT DOWN THE CARRIAGE HORSE INDUSTRY NOW!!!! PEOPLE WILL BE UP IN ARMS AND WILL HELP FIGHT THIS ABUSIVE PRACTICE WHEN MORE AND MORE FIND OUT WHAT'S REALLY HAPPENING "BEHIND THE SCENES!" KEEP FIGHTING EVERYONE-- PLEASE, FOR THE HORSES-THEY'RE DEPENDING UPON US WHO REALLY CARE AND UNDERSTAND!~

  • @HenryBerghNYC: And, by the way, "hyperbole" is a noun, not a verb. Moron.

  • @HenryBerghNYC: How dare you use the name of Henry Bergh, who walked the streets of New York every day stopping animal abuse. My guess is that he would NEVER condone the use of horses in streets full of vehicular traffic, simply for the amusement of tourists and backward New Yorkers. You should be ashamed.

  • Unfortunately, this doesn't happen only in New York. How many more horses have to suffer so ignorant people can have a horse and carriage ride -- take a damn taxi or lose some weight and take a walk!!! The video is very short; however, the poor woman who witnessed this horrible scenario will remember a very long time.

  • @HenryBerghNYC: thank goodness for you. my how you have enlightened us so. you keep coming back here and defending YOURSELF, not the issue in discussion. i hope you instead to spend your time wisely...maybe taking a bit more school and signing up for some courses in humanities, social justice, not to mention urban development and certainly economics and while you're at it brushing up on your grammar. (i KNOW that one ultimately receives what they put out there... so i

  • Why does this video end at 30 seconds? I once flipped a sleigh when I hit some uneven ground in deep snow. The horse toppled over and I held his head down while my friends got him unhitched in the lying down position- that was the safest way to handle it. When it was time to get him up he was a little disoriented, but then scrambled to his feet, shook off the snow and pranced back to the barn.

  • Get those bastard carriages OFF the streets. There's NOTHING bloody charming or romantic about it. It's animal torture. Let the bastard owners pull people round in trishaws instead. You cruel insensitive greedy bastards.

  • Heartbreaking. What is wrong with people, it just common sense that horses do not belong in to-days traffic. Why don't the authorities put a stop to this insanity??? Because they just don't care, right????

  • Horses do not belong on paved streets. They do not belong in traffic. Carriage horses are subjected to stresses which are inhumane. Horses were never meant to mix with cars and in all weather. This is simply common sense. End this ridiculous activity. Use these horses in park-like settings and treat them humanely the year round. Retire them humanely, too.

  • I am so sad to see this. Poor horse. I really don't think the streets of NYC are the place for any horses - it's far too busy, too dangerous. I hope they are banned very soon. I'd like to come to NYC but not whilst this is going on I won't be going.

  • So sad something need's to be done,I hate who do that to the poor horses ,that is beyond I am so upset because nobody care sad but true.

  • What kind of organization is this that they did not show the "happy conclusion" to this incident where the horse gets up and is fine?

Oh, I forgot - one that will stop at NOTHING to get the carriage horses banned so real estate developers can have free rein on the Westside, even if it means distorting and manipulating the truth.

  • @HenryBerghNYC The horse getting up is besides the point. S(he) should have never been allowed to get to that point.

Horses belong in the wild not the streets of NYC! If its a scenic ride through NYC you wish they created a thing called a bike!

I live near the stables in Hells Kitchen and these horses are over worked, beaten, and forced to live in conditions that capture terrorist shouldnt be forced to live in

  • @Achmat15 "The horse getting up is besides the point. S(he) should have never been allowed to get to that point."

Never ALLOWED to get to the point of exhibiting NORMAL horse behavior and bucking? And accidentally falling as some horses are, y'know, known to do from time to time? I thought you guys were all for letting horses be horses...

  • Do you really think that the person recording this cut off recording while the situation was unresolved? It's all been edited by NY-CLASS to look the worst it can.

The horse did not "collapse" - the horse tripped when he bucked, having been cooped up and kept from working for several days because of clean up in the Park.

The horse bucked, fell, and lay cooperatively while his people untangled him from the harness. He got up, and was walked home without incident.

  • @HenryBerghNYC yes but it is so unnatural for them to live in these circumstances. They are worked day and night, live in horrible conditions and exposed to death everyday.

  • @kathyvcelestial123 Hyperbole, much? Carriage horses work EITHER the day shift or the night shift - and only for a MAXIMUM of 9 hours. Exposed to death EVERYDAY? Seriously? 365 carriage horses dropping dead every year? Do you have any idea what you're suggesting?

  • @HenryBerghNYC you seriously have no compassion. So sad that they have taken these beautiful animals out of their natural environment and make them live like this.

  • @kathyvcelestial123 Taken them out of their NATURAL ENVIRONMENT? These are DOMESTIC HORSES, they were BRED to do this job. What do you think they were plucked from sprawling green fields and hitched up to a cart? How do you feel about dog sled racing?

  • @HenryBerghNYC Hey guy ! you don't seem to know horses .. Since everytime, they have a stressed behavior ! You can't like denaturate what nature made ... it's not that easy ! It's like reptiles, whatever the times you called it when you see it, it won't jump in your hand to show you it loves you. So please, please, just stfu and UNDERSTAND !

  • @kathyvcelestial123 Why don't you go to the stables sometime and see how these horses are cared for, and maybe start worrying about the thousands of horses who stand starving to death locked up in a shed in someone's backyard.

  • @jumpthatjanx EXACTLY. In fact, you need not leave youtube to check out the stables and see that what NY-CLASS and other anti-carriage organizations are saying IS NOT TRUE!!! Visit StopLiesSeeTruth 's YouTube channel (just enter "StopLiesSeeTruth" in the search bar) or take a (very quick) spin around West Side Livery in my own video shown in the sidebar (that video has a link to even MORE information about NYC carriage horses in the description).

  • @thedrafthorse THANK YOU. I find that most of these anti carriage folks are not horse people, but the clueless type that think that all horses should be free in the wild grazing in lush meadows (how shocked they would be to see how bad horses in the wild have it!). Sh*t happens, at the end of the day the horse was not hurt and very smart to have stayed still after getting hung up in the shaft!

  • Broke my heart!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Horrible. I live in NYC, and I am constantly yelling at the drivers. Horses with open sores, looking miserable. There are some petitions to signplease look for them. Be Well, Jeanne

  • On and on. It just goes on and one. Horses in accidents, horses dropping on the street. It is 2011 and the horse-drawn carriage is a barbaric remnant of the olden days. Nose to tail-pipe, Flesh and blood next to metal. Stop the abuse and stop it NOW. The horses belong in sanctuaries.

  • This is just horrible! What more proof do we need that this "industry" has to stop!?

All NYCLASS is asking for is support. Please sign the petition!

  • I'm so upset right now it's unbelievable.

  • Repulsive! I am so mad right now...And terribly sad!

  • THAT'S SO SAD:'(

  • I agree - carriage horses in NYC need to be banned.

Waiting for the inevitable ignorant comments ~BUT IT'S TRADITION~

  • HELP US BY GOING TO NY-CLASS.ORG

  • ny-class.org

  • Absolutely HORRIFIC AND SICK. This abuse must stop!

  • GO TO NYCLASS.ORG

  • When is this abuse going to stop. Just because Chris is Irish doesn't mean she has to support this cruel and inhuman industry. It is black beauty all over again without the redeeming aspects and no Joe to save these horses! We need to picked and block them from doing business as usual-we need to make it impossible. Who can we get to sign on?

  • @2violettina I think you need to reread Black Beauty. In it, BB's favorite, kindest, most knowledgeable driver was Jerry, the London cab driver. Meanwhile, the very FIRST instance of horse abuse / cruelty BB witnesses is the death of Rob Roy, his half-brother, killed jumping over a hedge while hunting. (Interestingly, many of NY-CLASS's supporters are eventers... hmmm?)

  • This industry has GOT to be eradicated... it's unacceptable, unethical, and downright barbaric when it subjects voiceless victims to this type of abuse and eventual death.

  • @Apep66 Not everyone who breaks and uses horses for carriage pulling runs their horses into the ground.... there should be stricter laws against animal abuse with more punishment for the crime, and there should be an industry standard with inspections every single day of the horses temperament, living conditions, body conditions, etc.

I saw a carriage horse myself in Chicago. That mare - an Ardennais - was very well taken care of. Tired, but not run in, and the day was almost over.

  • I'm in tears here and I only saw this 30 seconds. I can't imagine how you felt seeing this when it happened. THIS HAS TO STOP!!! (I can't even see my monitor I'm crying so much.) :-(

  • Please post where to sign and take action to ban the carriage horses in NY.
