wait wait wait,..everbody keeps bringing up the cavemen when it comes to fasting? then again,..is fasting a good idea for TODAYS fitness models? and athletes?
I'm trying intermittent fasting (according to lean gains) I'm 6f2 barefoot 185 lb with 18% bodyfat. I want to gain muscle mass, will intermittent fasting make me lose muscle mass? what is the way to do intermittent fasting while gaining muscle mass and losing fat i.e. real lean gains?
Slow twitch muscles are least dense - fast twitch is dense muscle, gained from heavy weights & low reps= power and speed.
Slow twitch muscles are larger as they contain more sarcoplasmic fluid, which rushes to the muscles more when they are under stress for long periods to aid their recovery. That is the 'pump'. You may think it's dense because it's protruding, but proper dense/strong muscle takes years to build. Easier for a sprinter to gain endurance than an enduro athlete to gain speed.
3000 calories in 8 hours are huge meals. much too big. that is major insulin dumping. that triggers extra fat storage and then you have to try to counteract that which it sounds like you are doing by exercising on an empty stomach. I don't think this is the way to train. Try fasting twice a week, each being 24hrs with only vitamins and water. that will keep you lean and allow normal eating on the other 5 days with moderate sized meals.
@tecnolover2642 I've tried both. The leangains IF protocol works better, gives better recovery, better workouts, better strength gains/maintainance, while enhancing fat loss at the same total amount of weekly calories.
@tecnolover2642 Calories in vs. calories out is all that really matters. When you eat those calories is not going to determine wether or not you'll loose weigh. Meeting macronutrients > Calorie timing - every single time
The body only stores so much glycogen in the muscles and liver, everything else goes to fat storage. If fat storage is what you are after then that is fine. The point is that people need to understand what is going on. Eating is a stress on the body that is why intermittent fasting is healthy and actually extends lifespan.
Smart kid (where you from?). Ancient humans, meaning, NOT the last 3000 years or so (Palace Economy) did NOT graze all day as some "gurus" go around saying. Nor did they "run" to stay in shape. Ancient humans went thru periods of micro-starvation (like, say, 16 hours), and gorged on meat, and walked everywhere. They also slept after they ate, usually at the end of the day (a hunt). This idea of grazing or not eating before bed is ridiculous.
@BriturTraining: Hey, I was just asking where you were from, but the rest of the post was to the general public as clearly, you already "get it". Yes, I see you are already doing this. The same trainers who brought us 6 meals a day (for non professional, drug-assisted lifters), steady-state cardio, and "muscle" confusion are the same types that run around saying humans grazed all day, and ran long distances, etc. Not true. Breakfast is a modern invention of elite Europeans, last 500 years.
I've checked out that link you've provided, I'm glad someone has figure it out,
like so many other theories and myths that needed to be debunked this one has now its time.
Another lesson learned: never believe anything if it doesn't feel right. Human intuition and personal individuality is more important than all the "marketing wisdom" out there.
Hey mate, are you changing to the intermittent fasting for an extended period of time? I'm interested in trying it out, just wondered what your thoughts are on duration. Cheers
@jamesrosssmith I'm going to try it out for a few months and depending on the results I'll keep it or change it. Definitely try it out, let me know if you need any help!
DUDE THIS IF IS AWESOME!
Doing a small amount in experimental stage. So many benefits.
