I have watched a season of Whale Wars, and after listening to this interview, it makes me wonder if the production crew of that show helped to portray him as an idiot when he is in fact quite articulate and intelligent. Since we are going to have some impact, we should care aless about how much impact we have? I've never understood the kind of logic that many people cling to where it's all or nothing. If you're not 100% vegan, then you might as well eat all the meat you can. All things in moderation, I think that's a good moto.
Bottom line.. if you do not have to eat meat to live..only make money off of. If money were not the issue for whalers and lil seal killers they would hunt them. I dare say they would be in a different line of work.
If nothing more, the style of killing should be changed. Even the US gov puts you to sleep before they kill you in the chair.

Nothing like condemning someone for standing up for something by critisizing them for not standing up for everything. More great logic. Such deep thinkers in here! Also, I heard nothing in the interview to make Paul sound bad. It's the propaganda at the end that is the deceptive part. In order for people to believe the lies, you have to throw in some truths, but I guess you just don't understand how propaganda works.
If you think the hakapik is brutal, then you'd probably hit the roof if you found out about the halal (Muslim) and shechhita (Hebrew Kosher) methods of slaughter. They flip the cow upside down or string it up by its hind legs and cut its throat all the way through the esophagus, so it chokes to death. Stunning the cow prior is forbidden. Catching the blood so it doesn't make a mess is forbidden. Since it happens to stinky cows behind closed doors and not on open white ice, people don't care.
No matter what you want to say about killing seals, calling this a hunt is like saying watching football is participating in a sport. You walk up to a seal and smash it's head in. That's not a hunt. If it is I guess I can go hunt a slug crawling on the ground. As for the claim it is for poor people needing to eat, the HUGE majority of this isn't done for food, it's to skin them, the meat is not the driving market force.
Yes, the pelts are the main source of income. But the flippers as well are sold as meat and eaten. The annual seal harvest produces up to 1/3 of the yearly income for alot of the sealers. Thats alot of money in an area where there's very few jobs or job opportunities. Many of these people need to live off the land in order to survive.
And as for it being humane, you cite one group and do not state the scope of their research nor where the payment for the study came from. If you're going to defend something, use bulletproof facts or your argument will be dismissed for what it is....meant to sway opinion with no more than opinion.
Yeah, I'm sure if someone were beating you over the head with a hakapik, that's what you'd be thinking, how humane it is. The problem is you are void of compassion and see yourself as the ultimate species. You stand up for shameful archaic 18th century practices when there are so many good things you could be spending this time promoting. In future generations this will be looked upon with as much disdain as slavery and witch hunts. You are a dying breed clinging to the past.
You obviously dont understand conservation or food cycle stability do you? Lets say the seal hunt stops. Seal populations will no doubt climb exponentially, and with fish stocks already at a minimum, they will eat much more fish. Seals will be living great for a few years, eating and reproducing. But what happens when theres not enough fish to go around? Millions of seals will die a slow and painful death because of starvation and disease. Is that what you would rather see?
The seal population is 3 times what it was in the 70's. The harp seal is not even close to being endangered. And I do realize it is the humans fault that there are very few fish left. But we can help the ecosystem recover by balancing it out again. By the way there are so many other important issues you should be focusing on, like endangered animals for instance (seeing as you care about them so much).
I am active with many other important issues and I consider this one of them. Also, anyone who still thinks that natural systems need man to balance out is living in a fantasy and ignoring the history of damage we have caused in trying to do so. Most species that have gone extinct or near extinct in the past had been previously "managed". Sometimes, man can help, but to think we can manage interconnected natural system we don't fully understand is a testament to mans arrogance.

Some of you people would be wise to watch the nature channel every now and again. Watching animals tear each other limb from limb, isn't exactly "humane" as you put it. I have watched a season of Whale Wars, and after listening to this interview, it makes me wonder if the production crew of that show helped to portray him as an idiot when he is in fact quite articulate and intelligent. I'm not saying he doesn't make some stupid decisions, but I think it warranted a comment that Paul doesn't seem to be the idiot that's portrayed on the show.

Yes, "there are plenty of liars in the world". What is your point? It's okay to lie because "everybody's doing it"? An honest person with a noble cause NEED NOT LIE. A leader should not lie. When a person is a confirmed liar, how can you possible know when they're telling the truth? How do you a blindly follow a person you can't trust?

I never supported Bush in the first place. I was against Bush and his lies all the way, even when criticizing him was extremely unpopular and could get you labeled as "unpatriotic" in the States.

American scientists also do whale research. It involves shooting a tissue dart or tag and fishing it out of the water. The Whale lives to tell about it.

One, I detest them more than the whalers because Paul is a criminal, liar and egomaniac. He's a detestable person who uses gullible people and exploits animals to promote himself and his ego. He hasn't killed anyone...yet, but I don't need to wait for that to call him out for what he is.
Paul has already destroyed his credibility and he can't get it back, but a group like the National Animal Interest Alliance has my support. They are rational, logical, law abiding people with a good cause.

Pesticides is one of them. But don't forget the irrigation that would be required for these gigantic fields. We are speaking already about a shortage water. What we are sure; we can only speculate in the long-term effects but it remains that it will be during this transit with this change of diet on planetary scales which the problems will appear. Not before. And that is not likely to change large thing with those today. Nothing is perfect in this world.

Where's this boycott some people speak of?As a fisherman I should be seeing this.The numbers just don't add up.Someone posted last week that canadians lost 467 million or something like that from a boycott.Ex-vessel prices paid to maritime fisherman (NB,NS,PEI)the last few years averaged about 800 million.Add in Newfoundland and BC and you MIGHT double that.That means almost 30% of our seafood was or is boycotted.Snow crab quotos actully went up in the maritines as did lobster catches.

If you think the hakapik is brutal, then you'd probably hit the roof if you found out about the halal (Muslim) and shechhita (Hebrew Kosher) methods of slaughter. They flip the cow upside down or string it up by its hind legs and cut its throat all the way through the esophagus, so it chokes to death. Stunning the cow prior is forbidden. Catching the blood so it doesn't make a mess is forbidden. Since it happens to stinky cows behind closed doors and not on open white ice, people don't care.

No matter what you want to say about killing seals, calling this a hunt is like saying watching football is participating in a sport. You walk up to a seal and smash it's head in. That's not a hunt. If it is I guess I can go hunt a slug crawling on the ground. As for the claim it is for poor people needing to eat, the HUGE majority of this isn't done for food, it's to skin them, the meat is not the driving market force.

Yes, the pelts are the main source of income. But the flippers as well are sold as meat and eaten. The annual seal harvest produces up to 1/3 of the yearly income for alot of the sealers. Thats alot of money in an area where there's very few jobs or job opportunities. Many of these people need to live off the land in order to survive.

You obviously dont understand conservation or food cycle stability do you? Lets say the seal hunt stops. Seal populations will no doubt climb exponentially, and with fish stocks already at a minimum, they will eat much more fish. Seals will be living great for a few years, eating and reproducing. But what happens when theres not enough fish to go around? Millions of seals will die a slow and painful death because of starvation and disease. Is that what you would rather see?

The seal population is 3 times what it was in the 70's. The harp seal is not even close to being endangered. And I do realize it is the humans fault that there are very few fish left. But we can help the ecosystem recover by balancing it out again. By the way there are so many other important issues you should be focusing on, like endangered animals for instance (seeing as you care about them so much).

I am active with many other important issues and I consider this one of them. Also, anyone who still thinks that natural systems need man to balance out is living in a fantasy and ignoring the history of damage we have caused in trying to do so. Most species that have gone extinct or near extinct in the past had been previously "managed". I think your comments are born of your OWN arrogance. Paul Watson is a terrorist and he should be dealt with as such. Today, Watson himself is using the very same propaganda of imagery (cute baby seals) to promote hatred against an identifiable group of human beings. My issue is NOT seals, but the terrorist activities and promotion of hatred by Watson, Aldworth and the terror organizations they represent. Their lives are not as important as the lives of our native fishers, so let the war begin.

So whats your point? I guess it's that there is absolutely nothing in life worth fighting for. We are all capable of being terrorists given the proper motivation. If the government drafted a new policy that all people over 50 should be done euthanized in order to save money. I guess you'd go right along with that. You certainly would not stand up against it would you, because you're not a terrorist. Anyone that disagrees with agovernment policy and fights against it is a terrorist to you.

I've heard Paul Watson speak, and this doesn't sound like his voice. Also, he is famous for lacking social skills and didn't tell the interviewer to F-off even once, so why should I believe that this is authentic?

Some of you people would be wise to watch the nature channel every now and again. Watching animals tear each other limb from limb, isn't exactly "humane" as you put it. Again, there's a difference between trying to kill the animal intently, as fast as possible. And torturing an animal for some sick pleasure.

I come from a family of REAL DEER HUNTERS - they will tell you and so will other REAL HUNTERS that this is NOT a hunt!
First - (thrill of the hunt) a real hunter gives a chance for the creature to get away - they surround the seals.
Second - a real hunter will do his/her best to kill the animal in one shot - not many blows as with the sealers.
Third - real hunters will never skin animals alive - watch videos = you will find this.

There is a difference between trying to stem inhumane treatment of animals and taking them for food and other needs. This is no different than killing cows, pigs and chickens, fish and other wildlife to feed us. Sure people don't need to eat x,y,z but we do. So unless you want to live naked in the middle of a field, better keep your yap closed and your eyes open, and do a little homework. It's not senseless killing. It's survival. You'd know that if you stepped foot outside your door.

Inhumane? God..if only some people would take the time to read, study and learn about something before they make comments. 95% of seals are shot. With a gun. The same kind of gun your family hunts deers with. The other 5% are killed with a hakapik, which has been proven by numerous studies conducted by international vetrinarians to be at least as humane as the tools used in slaughterhouses. The seals are killed instantly almost every time. Look it up.

YOU LOOK IT UP! O have spent more time reading and resaerching this topic than you ever will, I'm certain of that. Your problem is you can't spot propaganda when you see it. And since were playing "the assume game", im willing to bet you get all your information from an anti-sealing prospective, and not a non-biased source or info from the pro-sealing argument at least. Propaganda? How about videos featuring furry little whitecoats? Or "skinning alive"? Or even focusing on the hakapik, which is actually only used 5% of the time. I know propaganda all too well.
